Toledo homers past Columbus 8-4

The Toledo Mud Hens clobbered their way to an 8-4 victory over the Clippers Monday night. Columbus flexed their muscles in the second against Hens starter Ruddy Lugo when Stephen Head hit his third homer in his last four games for a brief 1-0 lead. Mike Hessman had his say in the fourth with a Herculean blast off Chuck Lofgren to tie the game. Toledo snatched the lead in the fifth when Dane Sardinha drilled a two-run shot for a 3-1 Hens advantage.

Columbus rallied in the seventh after the first two batters reached; a sacrifice bunt put runners at second and third. Lou Marson singled to drive in Tony Graffanino. Matt LaPorta scored on the play after Wilkin Ramirez booted the ball in left field and the game was knotted at 3-3.

Toledo came to bat in the sixth and put the hurt on Lofgren. Don Kelly singled, Hessman doubled off the wall in left and Brent Clevelen walked to load the bases. Jeff Frazier blasted a 1-2 pitch for a grand slam and a 7-3 lead. Lofgren retired the next three in a row, but the damage was done.

R. J. Swindle pitched one inning, allowing a solo home run to Ramirez, the first man he faced. Zach Jackson authored a scoreless eighth. Jeremy Bonderman pitched a scoreless seventh in relief of Lugo and Josh Rainwater relieved Bonderman in the eighth, going 1.2 innings.

The Clippers made it interesting in the ninth, scoring one run on a sacrifice fly by Niuman Romero and then loading the bases, bringing the tying run to the plate, but Freddy Dolsi entered and retired LaPorta for the game's final out.

The Clippers and Mud Hens meet again Tuesday at 7:00pm with Hector Rondon tossing for Columbus and Chris Lambert going for Toledo.

Captains Stomp Braves 19-2

The Lake County Captains scored a season high number of runs and had a season high hit total on their way to a 19-2 stomping of the Rome Braves on Monday. The Captains went 5-3 on the home stand.

The Captains took the lead in the bottom of the second inning scoring two runs on a RBI single by Chris Nash that scored Nate Recknagel and another RBI single by John Allman that scored Karexon Sanchez and the Captains led 2-0. It remained 2-0 until the sixth inning when the Captains scored eight runs in the bottom of the inning and followed it up with nine runs in the bottom of the seventh.

The Captains offense saw every batter in the starting line up coming up with at least one hit and eight of the nine starters scored at least one run. Donnie Webb went 4-5 with a grand slam home run and drove in a team leading six RBI’s. John Allman went 5-5 and drove in three runs. Recknagel had a double and a triple in the sixth inning driving in two runs and scoring three runs on the night. Steve Smith gave up a two run home run in the top of the ninth inning to Luis Sumoza to give the Braves their only run.

Captains starter Nick Hagadone did not get a decision going three scoreless innings allowing one hit while striking out five. Francisco Jimenez (4-0) came on in the fourth inning and went four scoreless innings allowing three hits while striking out three to pick up the win. Braves starter Julio Teheren (1-2) took the loss working five innings and allowing six runs on ten hits, walking two and striking out four.

The Captains are off on Tuesday and will travel to Delmarva for a three game series beginning Wednesday. The Captains will head to Lakewood for a three series following after that. The Captains will have LHP T.J. McFarland (7-4, 3.75) on the mound on Wednesday.
