Monday Update

Double-A Akron left-hander Ryan Edell was named Eastern League Pitcher of the Week, the league announced today. It is the first Eastern League weekly award in Edell’s career, and the fourth for an Aero this season (Jeanmar Gomez once, Nick Weglarz twice).

Edell was simply magnificent in his two starts this week, first blanking Erie for seven innings last Monday and then firing six scoreless frames against Binghamton Saturday night. The left-hander won both of those starts for his first back-to-back victories of 2009 to improve to 4-1, and now ranks second in the EL with both a 2.32 ERA and 1.13 WHIP, while sitting third with 91 strikeouts. For the week, Edell went 2-0 and did not allow a run in 13.0 innings of work. He gave up just nine hits and three walks while recording 11 strikeouts, and opposing hitters batted just .196 (9-46) against him. He also lowered his ERA by almost a half-run from 2.71 to 2.32 following Saturday’s triumph.

In other news, short-season Single-A Mahoning Valley outfielder Jason Kipnis has been activated. He had been with the team nursing a minor injury the past few weeks and is expected to ease his way back into game action. Also, some good news on High-A Kinston right-handed pitcher Alexander Perez as he left his start on Saturday night because of shoulder soreness. He is not expected to go on the disabled list and may not miss his next start.
