Game Recap 8/1: Sizzling Abraham Carries Captains

Abraham's 5 RBI Lifts Captains to 11-9 Win

Lake County led by Adam Abraham’s season high five RBI came from behind to beat South Bend 11-9 on Sunday afternoon. The Captains fell behind 6-1 overcoming four errors to win their second straight on the road.

Keon Broxton singled to start off the first inning for the Hawks. Broxton stole second and throwing error by the catcher Dwight Childs moved him to third. David Nick reached on a Ben Carlson error allowing Broxton to score. Bobby Borchering singled driving in Nick putting South Bend in front 2-0.

Greg Folgia singled leading off the third inning, stole second base and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Delvi Cid singled up the middle scoring Folgia cutting the lead in half at 2-1.

The Silver Hawks took advantage of two more Lake County errors in the third. Ramon Castillo and David Narodowski reached on walks with one out. Ender Inciarte loaded the bases after reaching on an Abraham fielding error. Tyson Van Winkle reached on a Casey Frawley error allowing two runs to score on the play. Victor Estevez singled to drive in Inciarte. Nick hit into a fielder’s choice to cap off the four run third inning for South Bend who led 6-1 after three.

The Captains got it going in the fourth following a Casey Frawley triple to lead the inning off. Abraham hit into a fielder’s choice scoring Frawley and was safe at first. Jason Smit drew a walk. Ben Carlson singled up the middle to score Abraham. Folgia doubled down the leftfield line driving in Smit. Childs contributed with an RBI ground out to score Carlson. Cid finished off Lake County’s five run inning with his second RBI single of the night to score Folgia tying the game at six.

The bottom half of the fourth inning swung the momentum back to South Bend. Back to Back singles by Matt Davidson and Castillo got things going. Narodowski doubled in Davidson to regain the lead. Inciarte hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Castillo and the Hawks led 8-6.

The Captains climbed back within one in the fifth inning, when Frawley tripled for a second time to lead off the inning. Abraham drove in his second run of the night with an RBI ground out making it 8-7.

In the bottom of the fifth, South Bend went back up by two when Nick scored on a sacrifice fly by Davidson to make it 9-7.

The sixth inning the Captains took control. Folgia picked up his third hit of the afternoon to get things started. Argenis Martinez drew a two out walk. Frawley collected his fourth hit of the day with infield single to load the bases. Abraham stepped up to the plate, and after a wild pitch scored Folgia to make it 9-8, Adam delivered a single up the middle driving in Martinez and Frawley giving the Captains their first lead at 10-9.

Lake County added an insurance run in the eighth inning. With two outs in the inning and Cid at third and Martinez at first, Abraham doubled down the leftfield line driving in Cid for his fifth RBI of the day lifting the Captains to 11-9 advantage.

Captains’ pitcher Preston Guilmet (2-1) picked up the win tossing 3.1 scoreless innings giving up just one hit and striking out two. Jose Flores collected his second save of the year with a perfect ninth and a strike out. Brad Gemberling (2-8) suffered the loss for South Bend giving up three runs on three hits in two innings of action.

Lake County and South Bend will wrap up their three game series Monday night at 7:00PM from Coveleski Stadium. The Captains will start RHP Clayton Cook (5-6) against the Silver Hawks RHP (Andrew Walcott (1-2).

Clippers fall in extras, 3-2

The Clippers met up with the Louisville Bats on Sunday night looking to end the Bats' nine-game winning streak, but fell in 11 innings, 3-2.

The Clippers had multiple chances late in the game but left the bases loaded in the ninth and tenth innings while the Bats left the bases loaded in the tenth, before winning the game on Drew Sutton's walk-off single to center. The Bats won the game despite leaving 19 men on base, but drove home the one that mattered in the end.

The Clippers took the early lead in the fifth inning with RBI doubles from Michael Brantley and Josh Rodriguez against Bats' starter, Ben Jukich. Brantley went 4-for-5 on the night, tallying three doubles on the night, and Rodriguez went 3-for-5, as the rest of the Clipper lineup only recorded three hits.

The Bats battled back with Chris Dickerson delivering and RBI single in the sixth, followed by Juan Francisco's RBI single in the seventh.

Carlton Smith took the loss on the night, dropping his record to 1-2, as Columbus used seven pitchers in the four-hour affair. Aroldis Chapman earned his eighth win of the year, pitching the tenth and eleventh innings.

The Clippers take a much-needed day off on Monday before returning to Columbus, looking to end a three-game losing streak, as they take on the Bats at 7:05 p.m.

R-Phils Smash Reyes, Aeros Lose Finale 11-3

Cleveland Indians starting pitcher Anthony Reyes struggled in his rehab start Sunday, allowing nine runs in 1.2 innings pitched as the Akron Aeros ended a weeklong home stand with an 11-3 loss to the Reading Phillies. The Phillies pounced for eight runs in the top of the second, the most allowed by the Aeros all season in splitting the four-game series in front of 2,616 fans at Canal Park. The loss dropped Akron to 56-50 while Reading jumped back to .500 for the season at 53-53.

Reyes struggled in the top of the first inning as well, allowing a leadoff walk and a stolen base to Michael Spidale. Harold Garcia advanced Spidale to third with an RBI single while Matt Rizzotti followed with a double to right-center to provide for an early 2-0 lead.

The top of the second then witnessed 13 different Reading at-bats and the frame began with three hits and a sacrifice bunt. Each of the next four batters reached base again, including three walks, as Reyes exited the game after forcing a soft liner to third base for the second out. Reliever Chen-Chang Lee entered the game but walked in another run to extend the deficit to 7-0 while a single and an error scored another three runs.

Nick Hagadone replaced Lee out of the bullpen in the fourth and after forcing two quick outs, ran into trouble again. Tuffy Gosewisch doubled to left-center field and Freddy Galvis followed with an RBI single to provide for Reading’s final run.

The Aeros offense finally responded to the blowout in the bottom of the fourth inning as third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall cleared the right field bleachers with a leadoff home run. Starting pitcher Michael Cisco then caught fire, retiring the next 12 batters he faced.

Akron scored the final runs in the ninth against Phillies reliever Chance Chapman. Center fielder Jordan Henry and Chisenhall each doubled to cut the margin down to 11-2 and after a walk to Beau Mills, John Drennen recorded an RBI on a fielder’s choice.

Cisco (3-7) earned the victory with one of his finest starts of the season, allowing just a single run on three hits in seven innings pitched. Reyes (0-1) failed to survive the second frame in his second Akron outing following June 2009 Tommy John reconstructive right elbow surgery, permitting six hits and four walks to the 15 hitters he faced. The nine runs permitted tied for the most allowed by an Aeros pitcher in 2010 and fortunately, the bullpen provided 7.1 efficient innings with 10 strikeouts against only one earned run.

Henry and Chisenhall provided for four of the only six Akron hits overall on the afternoon, as each extended their hitting streaks with multi-hit performances. Henry finished the home stand with a .571 (12-for-21) batting average and Chisenhall’s homer was his 12th.

The Aeros will enjoy an off day Monday before resuming action Tuesday against the first-place Altoona Curve. A doubleheader begins the crucial four-game series, and the two teams will play a pair of seven innings games starting Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at Blair County Ballpark. Alex White (6-4, 1.49 ERA) and Paolo Espino (9-4, 4.00 ERA) will throw for Akron against Altoona starters Justin Wilson (8-6, 3.06 ERA) and Jared Hughes (11-7, 4.62 ERA).

Scrappers drop game two to Crosscutters, 5-3

The Mahoning Valley Scrappers lost game two of a two-game series to the Williamsport Crosscutters Sunday night at Eastwood Field. Gregorio Rosario got the loss for the Scrappers coming in from the bullpen, pitching 1.2 innings and giving up two runs on four hits.

In his first outing in the New York-Penn League, Ervis Manzanillo picked up his first win for the Crosscutters pitching six innings, giving up three runs on four hits and striking out four. Eric Pettis recorded the save for Williamsport. Despite getting a no decision, Mike Rayl pitched well for the Scrappers working five innings, giving up two runs on four hits and striking out four.

The Scrappers will head to Batavia to take on the Muckdogs in the first of a two-game series Monday night. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.

Note: Kinston had a scheduled off day on Sunday

Hey Tony ~ Welcome back. Hope vacation was good and restful.
Glad to have your game descriptions back for the farm teams, much better than an endless stream of sterile stats.
One question. You use RBI as a plural in the header for the Captain's game, singular twice in the fifth paragraph. Not sure where the recent trend in the media using RBI as a plural noun gathered some inertia, but it's a bit irritating as it bears no logic in our language.
As RBI is an acronym, it is a noun, a singular noun. RBIs is plural.
Thanks for listening.
Pretty amazing turnover the past couple seasons, isn't it? Hoping we can find some big time hitting in the system...what we're seeing now is pretty frustrating. Any sleepers you have encountered we might see contributing in a season or two? And do you think the current administration will give some of the new kids regular playing time the rest of the year so they can settle in and get more comfortable, rather than sticking them in and out of the line-up, changing their place in the order, changing their position in the field, or just sitting on the bench for extended periods, ala Andy Marte a couple years back? Sorry for the run-on question!! Maybe you catch my drift after the messy end to the Wedge years.

I actually had an English professor knock me for that in a paper that I wrote for his class. For me RBI can be singular or plural as it would either be Runs Batted In or Run Batted In, regardless the placement of an 's' at the end of run wouldn't change the acronym. Not sure if that's the official way of doing it, but it makes good sense to me and it's been a growing trend in the media for as long as I've been watching baseball.

Brantley champing at the bit waiting to get called back up? Gets 4 hits, 2 doubles, while the rest of the team struggles. I hope we see this Brantley in Cleveland.

As an aside, I've always resented the media inforcing it's own interpretation of a decades-old acronym. Seems to me that an acronym can be whatever it is, regardless of the words underlying it.

The RBI thing is up for interpretation and just depends on your preference really. For me, I always use RBI for both singular and plural references. Since RBI is in almost every case "plural" (runs batted in) except for one instance when it is singular with one "run batted in"....I just use RBI. I am not a fan of the team "RBIs" because that is "run batted ins" or "runs batted ins". Like I said, up to the reader how they want to interpret things.

As for the hitting, I think we will now see some guys start to settle in. With Brantley soon to arrive, and with Brown here now and maybe Goedert coming up soon, it is gonna be an interesting lineup to watch in Cleveland the last few weeks and how those guys make adjustments and settle in (or fail). Lots of options in CBus for sure!

How long do you think Brown will stay up with Cleveland? I know he's a defensive disaster, but his bat has been great since last year and with the struggles of Hafner I'm sure Cleveland could use him. I keep hearing that once Brantley's 10 day minimum service in Columbus is up poor Brown will be sent back down.

It just seems unfair to him to not get an extended look at the MLB level this year. Factor in Brantley's inability to get things done at the MLB level and I'd much rather see Brown up now, and Brantley up when the rosters expand.

I'm not 100% certain on Brown, but my feeling is that they would not have called him up unless they planned to play him often and keep him up here for awhile. I think when Brantley is called up it may finally be the end of Marte's line....or Duncan.
