Hawks Beat Captains 8-7, in 10 to Avoid Sweep
South Bend had runners on the corners with one out in the tenth in a 7-7 tie. Victor Estevez hit ground ball to third, the Captains got the an out at second base and Estevez was called safe at first trying to beat the relay throw allowing David Narodowski to score giving the Silver Hawks a 8-7 win over the Lake County.
Keon Broxton led off the bottom of the first inning with double to left center. Bobby Borchering singled to right scoring Broxton putting South Bend up 1-0.
Lake County’s Chris Kersten doubled to start off the second inning, extending his on-base streak to 19 games. Greg Folgia walked with one out. Jason Smit singled up the middle scoring Kersten tying the game at one. Delvi Cid hit a two out, two-run double the line in left scoring Folgia and Smit lifting giving the Captains a 3-1 lead.
In the fourth, Kersten was hit by an Andrew Walcott pitch to get aboard. Roberto Perez singled to put runners on first and second. Greg Folgia doubled to left extending his hit streak to eight straight games socring Kersten. Ben Carlson was hit by a pitch loading the bases. Argenis Martinez hit a slow ground ball for an infield single to score Perez putting Lake County in front 5-1.
Adam Abraham picked up an infield single in the fifth extending his hit streak to six and on-base streak to 20 games. Perez collected his second base hit to put runners on the corners. Folgia singled to driving in his second run of the game scoring Abraham to make it 6-1.
In the bottom of the fifth, South Bend showed some signs of life when Tyson Van Winkle tripled off Clayton Cook to start the inning. Cook came up big striking out Estevez and Broxton to pick up two outs. But David Nick walked on four straight pitches to keep the inning alive. Borchering singled to right to score Van Winkle. Matt Davidson singled to center and scored Nick to cut the lead in half 6-3.
The Silver Hawks got to Jeremy Johnson in the seventh inning. An infield single by Estevez got things going. Nick singled with one out putting runners on the corners. With two outs, Davidson doubled into the corner in right scoring Estevez to make it 6-4. Ramon Castillo crushed a 1-2 pitch to left center for his sixth homerun of the year lifting the Hawks to a 7-6 lead.
The Captains showed some fight and hustle in the eighth inning. Smit picked up a one out single and stole second base. With two outs, Cid hit a chopper up the middle the shortstop Estevez fielded the ball threw to first, but Cid beat it out. Smit hustled all the way around from second base to score on Cid’s infield single sliding around the catcher to tie the game at seven.
Kevin Munson (2-0) picked up the win, pitching two perfect innings striking out four. Nick Sarianides (6-3) took the loss pitching two thirds of an inning giving up the winning run on two hits. Cook started for the Captains gave up three runs on nine hits in six innings of action striking out six.
The Captains return home on Tuesday night to host a four game series with their inner-state rival Dayton Dragons at Classic Park at 7:00PM. Lake County will start LHP Vidal Nuno (4-4) against the RHP Tim Crabtree (2-3) for Dayton.
Myrtle Beach at Kinston Suspended by Rain on Monday
Kinston's series opener with Myrtle Beach on Monday night was suspended in the top of the third inning due to rain and unplayable field conditions at Historic Grainger Stadium with the Pelicans leading 3-1. The teams will play a doubleheader on Tuesday night starting at 6 pm.
The Pelicans jumped ahead early against K-Tribe starter T.J. McFarland. Mycal Jones singled to start the game and Dan Nelson walked. Mike Jones then knocked an RBI single to left, and another run scored on the same play when Kinston left fielder Donnie Webb made an error trying to play the ball to make it 2-0.
Kinston answered in the bottom of the inning as Karexon Sanchez hit an infield single followed by an Abner Abreu base hit to right. The runners moved up on an error by the right fielder Luis Sumoza. Chun Chen hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Sanchez and pull the Indians to within 2-1.
In the top of the second, Myrtle Beach put two on with two out. Mycal Jones sent a high chopper to third, and Kyle Bellows threw home but Sumoza was ruled safe at home on a very close play to give the Pelicans a 3-1 edge.
Rain showers entered the area in the top of the third inning. The Pelicans had two on with one out and Gerry Rodriguez at the plate when the game was stopped.
Scrappers Lose In Extras
The Mahoning Valley Scrappers lost game one of a two-game series to the Batavia Muckdogs 6-3 Monday night in 10 innings at Dwyer Stadium. Roberto Espinoza hit a walk off three-run home run in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Muckdogs the win.
Takafumi Nakamura gave up the three-run home run and was saddled with the loss for the Scrappers. Houston Summers got the win for Batavia pitching three scoreless innings of relief. Giovanny Urshela led the Scrappers offensively going 2-4 with a two-run home run.
Despite getting a no decision, Owen Dew pitched well going six innings, giving up one run on three hits and striking out four.
Note: Columbus and Akron had a scheduled off day on Monday.
