Paw Sox blast Columbus

The Pawtucket Red Sox showed no mercy on the Clippers, pounding out twenty hits in a 9-1 win over Columbus on Monday.

The Sox wasted no time as Chip Ambres scored on a single by Chris Carter and Carter scored on a Paul McAnulty first inning double. With two outs in the second, Sean Danielson doubled and Jonathan Van Every singled to right scoring Danielson. Ambres drove home Van Every to put Pawtucket up 4-0.

Pawtucket added two runs each in the third and fourth innings to take a commanding 8-0 lead. The Clippers finally got on the board in the fourth on back-to-back doubles by Jamie Carroll and Wes Hodges. A Sean Danielson homer capped the scoring.

Paw Sox starter Michael Bowden (2-1) allowed one run and four hits in seven and a third innings of work. Randor Bierd and Chris George finished the win in relief.

Clippers starter Jack Cassel (2-3) was hit for nine runs, all earned, in five innings. Rafael Perez, John Meloan, and newcomer Blaine Neal combined for four scoreless relief innings.

Leigh Valley visits Columbus for a four-game series starting Tuesday. Left-hander David Huff (4-1) will start for the Clippers and the first pitch is scheduled for 6:35pm.

Aeros Bats Quiet in 3-1 Loss to Bowie

The Aeros managed just five hits (and only one after the third inning), falling to the Bowie Baysox 3-1 in game one of a three-game set before 9,000 fans at Canal Park Monday night. The loss dropped the Aeros to 22-6 on the season, while Bowie improved to 12-17.

The Aeros struck first in the bottom of the second inning when a leadoff walk to Carlos Santana started a rally. Nick Weglarz, who has been sensational in the month of May, then doubled to left-center field and Santana hustled all the way around to score on the play giving the Aeros a short-lived 1-0 lead. The Aeros came into the game 15-1 when scoring first, but were unable to maintain the one-run advantage as Bowie responded immediately in the top half of the third.

Jonathan Tucker walked to begin the inning, and Guillermo Rodriguez put down a sacrifice bunt only to see an errant throw by third baseman Jared Goedert push the runners to second and third with nobody out. Tucker then came around to tie the game on a groundout from Dave Krynzel, and Melvin Dorta plated Rodriguez with a two-out single to left.

Another Baysox run came through in the fourth as Ambiorix Concepcion kicked things off by reaching first base on Goedert’s second throwing error. Carlton Smith came on to relieve starter Erik Stiller, but Concepcion still managed to move into scoring position with a stolen base. A clutch two-out base hit by Tucker then brought in Concepcion, bringing the Bowie lead to 3-1 and providing the final margin of the night.

Stiller (1-2), a converted reliever, had his longest start of the season, lasting 3.1 innings and holding the Baysox to just one hit, although he was charged with all three runs (none were earned). He walked one and struck out two. Smith and Steven Wright combined to provide 5.2 shutout innings from the bullpen, but it was all for naught as the Aeros could do nothing against the tough Bowie pitching. Weglarz and Santana each picked up a hit and two walks, but the Aeros stranded eight runners on the night and went 1-for-6 with men in scoring position.

Arrieta (3-1) limited Akron to one run and only four hits in his five efficient innings, walking two and striking out six before three Baysox relievers allowed just one runner to reach scoring position the rest of the way. Arrieta has permitted only five hits in 10 innings while picking up 13 strikeouts in two starts against Akron this season, and in 11 games total against the Aeros in 2009 Bowie pitchers have collected 77 Ks, including 10 Monday night.

This series continues on Two for Tuesday, as the Aeros will look to even the series with Bowie at 7:05 p.m. Hector Rondon (5-0, 1.23 ERA) takes the mound for Akron, and will look to become the first six-game winner in the Eastern League against Bowie left-hander Bobby Livingston (2-1, 3.77 ERA).

Captains Shut Out Kannapolis Again 1-0

A solo home run in the bottom of the second inning by Abner Abreu was the only run of the game as the Lake County Captains shut out the Kannapolis Intimidators 1-0 on Monday. The Captains have shut out the Intimidators two games in a row and have thrown five shutouts this year.

Captain’s starter Mike McGuire got the win (3-2) going five scoreless innings allowing two hits, two walks and striking out four. Anillins Martinez followed McGuire and tossed 2.2 scoreless innings striking out three. Steve Smith pitched the final 1.1 innings to pick up his fifth save of the year. Justin Edwards was the tough luck loser (1-1) allowing the one run in six innings of work giving up three hits and striking out three.

The Captains go for the series sweep on Tuesday at 6:30 PM when they send RHP Joey Mahalic (0-1, 2.42) to the mound against the Intimidators RHP Greg Infante (2-1, 1.51).
