Columbus sweeps double header

In game one, the Clippers won it in dramatic fashion in the bottom of the seventh off a Chris Gimenez walk.

However, the Clippers got off to an early 2-0 lead off a sac fly from Michael Aubrey and an RBI double off the bat of Jordan Brown.

In the bottom of the third, tied at two, the Clippers took the lead again via the long bomb, when Michael Aubrey homered to right.

Lehigh Valley tied the game up in the top of the fourth and it would remain tied until the walk-off walk.

Starter Kirk Saarloos (2-4 5.11) went six strong innings, giving up six hits on three earned runs. He walked two and struck out two. The winning pitcher of game one was Rich Rundles (1-1 2.13) pitched a scoreless seventh, earning his first win of the season.

The second game was also decided by one run and Columbus struck first for three in the second. Chris Gimenez led off the inning with a home run to left field. Jordan Brown followed that up with a double to right. Later in the inning, George Lombard singled, driving in Brown. Andy Cannizaro also singled, scoring Lombard.

Lehigh Valley struck for four in the top of the third, giving them a 4-3 lead.

Columbus then scored a run in the bottom of the fourth and fifth, giving them a 5-4 win.

Starter Tomo Ohka (3-2 3.54) went five innings, allowing five earned runs.

Aeros shuts out Altoona

Akron pounded out 13 hits, but their pitching staff was the story of the day, only allowing five hits and shutting out Altoona 7-0.

Akron got on the board in the third when Niuman Romero grounded out, which scored Jerad Head. They scored another run in the third from when Matt McBride singled, scoring Jared Goedart. In the fifth, Akron scored two, with RBIs coming from Goedart and Head. Damaso Espino drove in another run in the seventh, and an RBI each for Weglarz and Head in the eighth.

Jenmar Gomez (3-0 0.45) went eight strong innings, only allowing four hits and striking out eight, while not allowing a single run or walk.

K-Tribe lose 4-3

Kinston had trouble driving in runs on Thursday night, as they were able to get the lead-off man on base in each of the first five innings, but couldn’t drive him home. Kinston also struck out a season high 14 times.

Kinston finally broke through in the sixth inning, when Drennen led off with a double and Alex Castillo drove him in with a hit two batters later. With Kinston trailing 2-1, Wilmington would take advantage of another K-Tribe mistake as Wilmington’s Johnny Giavotella reached base on an error by K-Tribe first baseman John Allman.

With Kyle Landis on the mound, Wilmington’s Mike Moustakas hit a two-run home run one batter later, extending the lead to 4-1. Kinston matched a season high with three errors on the night, resulting in two unearned runs.

Kinston starter Paolo Espino (0-1) was the tough luck loser, giving up just three hits and one earned run in five innings. He walked one and struck out four. Matt Meyer was great out of the K-Tribe bullpen, pitching two perfect innings and striking out two.

Kinston would finally get that clutch hit in the eighth inning, when Cord Phelps would drive home Roman Pena and Lucas Montero with a two-out, two RBI single. Chisenhall (2-for-5), Drennen and Pena each had two hits for Kinston.

Captains shut out

The Lake County Captains season high four game winning streak came to an end as the Hickory Crawdads shut out the Captains 5-0 on Thursday. The Captains have struggled against the Crawdads this year going 1-4 so far. This was the second time this year that the Captains have been shut out.

The Hickory Crawdads got to Captains starter T.J. House scoring two runs in the bottom of the second innings when Timmy Rodriguez drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and Edward Martinez singled home a run to make it 2-0. It went to 3-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly by Matt West.

The lead was extended to 5-0 in the bottom of the seventh inning when a Captains fielding error allowed a run to score and Erik Morrison single home a run.

House (1-4) took the loss lasting six innings and allowing three runs on five hits, walking one and striking out six. Crawdads starter Wilmer Font upped his record to 2-0 pitching six scoreless innings and scattering four hits walking three and striking out six.
