Norfolk sweeps twinbill from Clippers
The Clippers dropped both halves of a double-header to the Norfolk Tides on Tuesday night 5-0 and 5-2. The biggest story of the night may have happened before the game as Jeremy Sowers was held from his scheduled start after manager Torey Lovullo talked with the Indians brass. After the second game, the skipper had no further information regarding Sowers' situation.
On the field, the Clippers were shut down in game one by Rich Hill and Matt Albers. Columbus managed just two singles in the loss. Zach Jackson allowed two runs on seven hits over three innings, filling the starting spot vacated by Sowers. John Meloan gave up two runs in two innings and Ryan Edell allowed one run in his only frame of work.
The nightcap didn't go any better for the Clippers. Jack Cassel pitched well enough to give the team a chance to win, but the offense could not put up any crooked numbers. Cristo Arnal played a role in both Clippers runs in his Triple-A debut. He doubled in his first at-bat, went to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a wild pitch. In the fifth inning, Arnal drove in Andy Marte with a ground out to make it 3-2, but the Clippers couldn't get closer. Justin Turner singled in two runs off Rich Rundles in the bottom of the six to finish off the scoring.
The opening game was pushed back eight minutes because of rain and the nightcap was halted for 17 minutes due to a power outage in the fifth inning. Game three of the series will take place at 7:15pm Wednesday. David Huff throws for Columbus against Norfolk's Chris Tillman.
Aeros Washed Out Again Tuesday
Akron was rained out for the third straight day Tuesday, as persistent showers postponed the Eastern League matchup between the Aeros and the Altoona Curve. The teams will make up the contest tomorrow (Wednesday) night with a doubleheader consisting of two seven-inning games starting at 5:05 p.m.
Akron will try again Wednesday, although starting pitchers have not yet been announced for either game of the twin-bill.
K-Tribe Scores Lots Late, But Salem Slips By
Trailing 9-2 going into the top of the seventh inning, Kinston mounted a monster comeback tying the game late, but letting it slip away even later; finally falling to Salem 11-9 Tuesday night in Virginia. The K-Tribe scored five runs in the seventh and two in the eighth inning to tie, but a two-out rbi double by Salem’s Jon Hee gave the Red Sox the win.
The comeback was even more considerable as Kinston trailed 7-0 after the first inning. K-Tribe starter Ryan Miller did not make it out of the first, walking six of the first nine batters he faced. Salem used the six walks and just two hits to take a 7-0 advantage. Kinston’s bullpen would once again keep them in the game, as Kyle Landis, Matt Meyer and Chen Chang Lee ate up a combined six plus innings, giving up two earned runs.
Trailing 9-2 in the top of the seventh inning, Kinston sent ten men to the plate tacking on five runs off of seven hits. With Kinston trailing 9-7 in the top of the eighth Matt Brown would send a two-out, two-RBI single to right field scoring Adam Davis and Lonnie Chisenhall, tying the game at nine. Brown went 2-for-5 with three RBI. Cord Phelps and Chisenhall each had two RBI for Kinston.
The lead would be short lived as Jered Farkes would start the bottom of the eighth for Salem with a walk. With one away, Stanley was cut down at second on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Luis Segovia. With two outs, Salem’s Kris Negron would keep the inning going with an infield single. The seeing eye hit set the table for Jon Hee’s two-out, two RBI double off of Kinston closer Dallas Cawiezell. Lee was the tough luck loser for Kinston, as he walked the leadoff batter in the inning. It was the first earned run Cawiezell had given up in his last eight appearances (eleven innings). The game was delayed an 1:16 minutes due to field conditions before play began.
The K-Tribe returns for game three of the four game series Wednesday at Salem. Russell Young gets the start for Kinston, game time 7:07 pm.
Crawdads Nip Captains 2-1
Erik Morrison hit a solo home run in the top of the sixth inning to break a 1-1 tie and that was all the scoring on the night as the Hickory Crawdads defeated the Lake County Captains 2-1 on Tuesday. The Captains are now 2-6 in one run games and saw their record fall to 3-8 at Classic Park.
The Crawdads got the early lead when in the top of the first inning when David Paisano led of the game with a single and then scored on a double by Mike Bianucci and it was 1-0. The Captains tied it up in the bottom of the third inning when Mark Thompson doubled and scored on a single by Nate Recknagel to make it 1-1.
Captain’s starter T.J. McFarland did not get a decision going five innings and allowing one run on four hits, walking one and striking out one. David Roberts took the loss going two innings and allowing one run.
Crawdads starter Carlos Pimentel got the win (1-1) lasting five innings allowing one run on seven hits, walking one and striking out two. Tyler Tufts picked up his first save of the year.
Game two of the four game series is Wednesday at Classic Park with game time at 6:30 PM. The Captains will have Joey Mahalic (0-1, 1.00) on the mound against LHP Richard Bleier (2-1, 1.14).

This might come as a bit of an odd request, but I'm a BGSU grad who got to see Nolan Reimold in person at BGSU and thought he had a ton of potential, especially power. I know you focus pretty strictly on the Indians' Prospects, but was wondering if you had any impressions of him?
He's been lighting up pitching in AAA, but is 25 (will turn 26 in October). He crushed Aeros pitching in the Eastern League Playoffs last year, and it's safe to say I'm rooting for the guy to make it to the majors.
Besides for that, I have no idea the implications of not starting Sowers. The ML club is in such disarray, about anything could be happening right now. If it weren't for the Tommy John Choo went through, I'd be willing to give him a shot in the bullpen.
Can't say I honestly know who Reimold is, though this is more because when we play other teams I focus almost 100% on our guys. Sorry. But good luck to him, that's pretty cool he is from BGSU.
