Game Recaps: Wednesday 5/13

The Columbus Clippers game was rained out and will play a doubleheader tomorrow. The Lake County Captains had the day off.

Aeros squeak by

In what could be considered a relatively quiet game, it was a scoreless game going into the bottom of the sixth. However, that would change.

Jerad Head led off the inning by hitting a double to left. Then, with two outs and Head at second, newly promoted, Matt McBride, drove a single to to left field, scoring Head. Nick Weglarz followed that up with an RBI single of his own, giving the Aeros a 2-0 advantage.

Akron gave up a run in the seventh, but that's all they gave up, as they held on to win a close one by the score of 2-1.

Starter Josh Tomlin (4-1 3.82) went 6.2 innings, allowing five hits and only one earned run. He also struck out eight, while not walking a batter.

Kinston comes close, lose 3-2

Starter Eric Berger was great early, but Wilmington unleashed three straight singles to load the bases in the top of the third inning. Berger did damage control, allowing only one run in the inning, a RBI ground out from Wilmington’s Mike Moustakas. After giving up a solo home run to Ryan Ikestea in the fourth inning, Berger found himself in trouble again, giving up three straight singles to start the fifth. The third single, an RBI by Moustakas extended Wilmington’s lead to 3-0. Berger would again limit the damage and not allow Wilmington to score another run. Berger (3-2) was saddled with the loss giving up seven hits in five innings.

Kinston would mount a comeback loading the bases with three singles of their own in the top of the seventh inning. Roman Pena’s sacrifice fly scored John Allman from third, making the score 3-1. The potential big inning would come to an end after Davis walked and Lucas Montero would ground into an inning ending double play. Montero would redeem himself in the top of the ninth, driving home Davis with a two-out RBI triple making the score 3-2. Cord Phelps would then strike out to end the game. Heath Taylor pitched great in relief for Kinston, allowing just one hit and no runs through three innings. Taylor struck out three and did not walk a batter.
