Clippers split double header

In game one, the Clippers were shut out, having just four hits, while starter Jack Cassel (2-4 7.04) went the distance allowing four hits, three earned runs, and walking two, while striking out three. His downfall was giving up two long balls on the day.

In game two, the Clippers struck early when Andy Marte doubled in the first to score Trevor Crowe.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Yankees tied it up with a home run off the bat of Eric Duncan.

Starter Jeremy Sowers (2-1 2.03) went seven innings, allowing six hits and one earned run, while walking two and striking out three.

However, the game went into extras and in the eighth, Wilson Valdez hit an RBI single to score Wyatt Toregas and give the Clippers a 2-1 lead and win.

Rafael Perez came on in the bottom of the eighth and was lights out, putting the Yankees down one, two three, while striking out two, to earn a save.

Aeros sweep double header in Altoona

The Aeros swept a doubleheader in Altoona Sunday, easily taking game one by a score of 8-2, while staging a rally late to storm back and take game two 9-2.

Akron scored first on an unearned run caused by a fielding error. Mickey Hall singled in another run in the fifth inning and then Hall was brought home on a bloop single by Jerad Head to put the Aeros up 3-0.

The Aeros continued to pour it on in the sixth when Nick Weglarz hit an RBI single to right center and then a sacrifice fly scored Jared Goedert before Head doubled to deep left to plate two and put Akron ahead 7-0.

Ryan Edell (1-0) picked up the win for Akron, throwing five innings, allowing no runs on three hits with five strikeouts and no walks.

In game two, Altoona held a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second, but Akron stormed back to grab four runs in the top of the fifth and a four-spot in the top of the sixth to defeat Altoona 9-2. Former Aero Randy Newsom, traded earlier in the day to the Pirates organization, took the loss against his former teammates.

Nick Weglarz went four-for-seven in the double header, continuing his hot streak. Carlos Santana also went four-for-six in the double header.

Sunday afternoon's game for Kinston was suspended in the bottom of the first inning and will be continued as part of a double header next weekend.

Captains earn series split

Adam Abraham had three RBI's and T.J. McFarland pitched five scoreless innings as the Lake County Captains defeated the Hickory Crawdads on 9-2 on Sunday. The Captains and Crawdads split the four game series.

After playing a rain shortened game on Saturday, there was an hour and a half rain delay at the start of this game. When things got started, it did not take the Captains long to get on the board scoring a run in the first inning when Nate Recknagel bounded into a double play allowing Delvi Cid to score and it was 1-0.

The Captains exploded for six more runs in the top of the third inning when Abner Abreu singled home a run. Adam Abraham followed with two run single. Doug Pickens, Walter Diaz and Cid drove in runs as well and it was 7-0. The Captains made it 8-0 in the top of the fourth inning when Abraham singled home Recknagel. Karexon Sanchez singled home Adam White in the top of the eighth inning and it was 9-0. The Crawdads got their two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning on a two run single by Dog Hogan off of Anillins Martinez.

McFarland (2-2) got the win working five scoreless innings and allowing five hits, walking one and striking out two. McFarland has not allowed a run in his last fifteen innings of work. Mike McGuire tossed three scoreless innings of relief allowing one run and striking out four. Cliff Springston (2-4) took the loss going only three innings and allowing seven runs on eight hits, walking one and striking out three.
