The AFL Update: Week 3

After three weeks of play, the Mike Sarbaugh-led Peoria Javelinas are 10-6, half a game back in the AFL West Division. League play takes a break this coming weekend when the AFL Rising Stars Game is played in Surprise Stadium on Saturday, Nov. 6 at 6pm local, 9pm EST. Set your DVR's, as this game will be worth watching. Of the 50 players who played in last years Rising Stars Game, 28 played in the bigs this season, including Buster Posey, Sterlin Castro and Mike Leake.

Jason Kipnis, 2B: Kipnis continues to struggle at the plate, going 2-13 with a 2B and an RBI since the last AFL update. He's hitting .159/.213/.409 overall with 2 HR and 10 RBI. He's walked 3 times, struck out 5 and stolen a base.

Cord Phelps, 3B: Phelps has been hot down in the desert, going 5-15 and adding in 5 BB in the last week to push his overall line to .324/.468/.432. Phelps has just 3 XBH in 37 AB's, but is showing top of the order skills with 10 BB and going 3-4 in stolen base attempts.

Roberto Perez, C: Perez has caught 2 games since the last AFL update, going 0-8 with 3 K and a BB. His overall line is .130/.200/.174. He's continuing to play solid defense behind the plate, including picking a runner off 1B. Defense is going to be his calling card if Perez is going to have a career in MLB.

Adam Abraham, 3B/C: As a member of the taxi squad, Abraham has only played in 5 games so far in AZ. He has hits in 4 of those 5, with an overall line of .263/.391/.316. Abraham is holding his own against the higher competition in the AFL, with as many walks (4) as strikeouts.

Scott Barnes, SP: Barnes recorded a victory in his last start on 8/29, throwing 4 innings and giving up 3 runs on 5 hits. He struck out 5 and walked one. Barnes continues to lead the AFL in strikeouts with 19 in his 14 2/3 innings, and has posted a 5.52 ERA.

Eric Berger, RP: Berger is still cranking out scoreless appearances, adding two more since the last AFL update. He has allowed 9 baserunners in his 5 IP (4 H and 5 BB), but has escaped without allowing an earned run each time. Berger has struck out 4 batters in his 5 innings, and did allow one unearned run back on 10/21.

Chen Lee, RP: After struggling in his last outing, Lee bounced back on 10/28 to throw a clean frame with a strikeout. For the season in Arizona, Lee has a 7.50 ERA, 7 K and one BB in his 6 IP.

Bryan Price, RP: As Tony reported in his AFL Spotlight yesterday, Price is down in AZ working on his splitter as a 3rd pitch in his arsenal. It seems to be working, as he has posted a 3.67 GO/FO mark in AZ. His last outing was a scoreless inning, and his overall ERA is 9.53.

Travis Turek, RP: Another member of the taxi squad, Turek has appeared in just one game since the last AFL update, and it was a rough outing. Turek gave up 3 ER in one inning, walking 2 and allowing 2 hits in the process. Turek has pitched 3 innings in AZ and has an ERA of 12.00 to go along with 2 BB and a K.

Nationals 1st round pick Bryce Harper continues to find success in the desert, including his first professional HR. He's been extremely agressive at the plate, posting a .353/.353/.647 line in his 4 games in AZ. MLB is featuring him in their AFL auction, selling off a signed ball, lineup card and the actual 2nd base he reached with his first pro hit (a double).
