Game Recaps 6/1

Got word that Jeff Stevens was called up to Buffalo or will be in the next day or two. Nothing official yet, but will post something when/if it occurs. Also, with Stevens going to Buffalo supposedly TJ Burton would be joining Akron from extended spring training.

Bowie’s Big 8th Inning Downs Aeros

AKRON, OH – The Aeros took a tie game into the eighth inning, but the Baysox broke the game open with six runs in the frame and took the final game of this three-game set 7-1 before 7,102 fans at Canal Park Sunday. The Aeros fell to 29-25, while Bowie moved to 33-24.

The Baysox got on the board first with a run in the top of the second off Aeros starter Chuck Lofgren. With one out, Ryan Finan walked and Brian Peterson and Jonathan Tucker stroked singles to load the bases. Blake Davis drove home Finan on a sacrifice fly to deep center, but Lofgren recovered to strikeout Mike Rodriguez to end the inning.

The Aeros offense struggled to get anything off Bowie starter Brad Bergesen. The best opportunity for Akron came in the second when they put runners on second and third with one out, but Armando Camacaro lined out and Brandon Chaves grounded out to end the threat. Akron finally scratched out a run in the sixth to tie the game at 1-1. With Bronson Sardinha at first and one out, Nathan Panther drove a triple high into the sun and wind over Mike Rodriguez’s head, and the centerfielder twisted and turned three separate times before the ball fell at the foot of the warning track.

Bowie, though, rocked Aeros relievers Erik Stiller and Shawn Nottingham in the eighth inning. With one down, Jeff Nettles hit a high fly to left, but Nathan Panther, battling a strong wind blowing in, could not get a beat on it as it clipped off his glove, allowing Nettles to reach second. That opened the floodgates for the Baysox, as the next four hitters all reached to score the first two runs of the inning. Blake Davis then grounded into a fielder’s choice scoring another run, making the score 4-1. Rodriguez then drove home two on a double into the left-field corner and Carlos Rojas ripped an RBI single to bring the final tally to 7-1.

Bergesen (6-1) earned the win, allowing just one run on seven hits with seven strikeouts in seven innings of work. Stiller (1-1) took the loss for the Aeros as he allowed the go-ahead run in the eighth. He worked 2.1 innings, allowing two runs (one earned), on two hits with one strikeout. Lofgren went five innings, surrendering one run on six hits with one walk and a pair of strikeouts. Panther was 2-3 on the afternoon with Akron’s lone RBI. Josh Rodriguez pushed his season-high hitting streak to seven games, going 1-5.

The Aeros now hit the road for a six-game, two-stop road trip beginning at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday night in New Hampshire. Akron sends Frank Herrmann (5-3, 4.68 ERA) to the mound against Fisher Cats left-hander Brett Cecil (0-1, 4.63 ERA). K-Tribe Wins Series Splits Doubleheader in Potomac

The Kinston Indians split a doubleheader with the Potomac Nationals, Sunday afternoon, winning 7-5 and losing 4-0 in the nightcap. The Indians struck big in the second and sixth scoring three runs in each inning, with run scoring singles from Alex Castillo in both innings. Jason Denham had a pair of runs scored in the opener and stole a base. Cristo Arnal broke out reaching base three times with two hits and two runs scored.

Carlton Smith (4-2) won his staff-leading fourth game on the season going six and two-thirds giving up five runs and striking out four. He almost let things go in the seventh allowing three runs and leaving with the tying run at the plate. Dan Cevette came in and recorded the final out for his second save in as many games.

It was all Nationals, though, in game two, as Dee Brown’s two-run homer and RBI single paced them to snap a season-high four game losing streak. The loss in game two was the second for Jim Deters, who went four innings giving up all three of Brown’s RBIs. The loss in the nightcap snapped a season-high seven game losing streak.

The K-Tribe will try and start a new win streak against at Wilmington when they take on the Blue Rocks Monday night in the first of four. Jeanmar Gomez (2-5, 5.80) takes the hill with the first pitch at 7:05.
