LHP Kelvin De la Cruz was promoted to Akron on Saturday for what looks like was just for a spot start. Akron had a doubleheader and De La Cruz pitched Game Two going five innings and giving up four runs on four hits, three hits and struckout four. RHP Paolo Espino replaced De La Cruz on the Lake County roster. This should just be a temporary move, but I wonder....
By the way, Akron outfielder Trevor Crowe is SIZZLING. In his last four games he is 11-for18 (.611) at the plate with 4 2B, 2 HR, and 8 RBI.
Kinston Shuts Down Salem
Kinston starter Hector Rondon picked up his fifth win of the season, striking out a season high nine in a 3-1 K-Tribe victory over Salem, Saturday night at Historic Grainger Stadium. Rondon (5-3) went seven innings, giving up three hits and an unearned run. Sung-Wei Tseng pitched an inning plus of scoreless relief and Luis Perdomo came out of the bullpen to grab his league leading 18th save of the season.
Kinston got all three runs and all four of their hits in the bottom of the first inning. Johnny Drennen led off with a double, Beau Mills followed with a single. Nick Weglarz drove home Drennen with an RBI base hit. With two-outs in the inning, Chris De La Cruz lined a single to right field, scoring Weglarz and Jared Goedert. Kinston would not get another hit in the game. Casey Hudspeth (4-7) took the loss for Salem, giving up four hits and three earned runs in six innings.
The K-Tribe goes to 4-1 in the second half of the Carolina League season, staying in first place in the Southern Division. Kinston plays their last game before the All-Star Break Sunday afternoon at Grainger Stadium against Salem. Kinston’s Carlton Smith gets the call for the 2pm start.
CAPTAINS DE-CLAW LAKEWOOD 9-2
(Lakewood, NJ) –Joey Mahalic pitched six innings, struck out a season high seven batters and Karexon Sanchez had three hits as the Lake County Captains defeated the Lakewood BlueClaws 9-2 on Saturday. Mahalic retired the first twelve batters he faced and did not give up a hit until there was on one out in the fifth inning.
The Captains scored an unearned off of BlueClaws starter Walter Tejeda in the top of the first inning when with one out Lucas Montero walked. He stole second and then third and on the steal of the third the throw from catcher Jesus Sanchez sailed into left field and Montero scored to make it 1-0. The lead was upped to 2-0 on a Michael Valadez double that scored Jeff Hehr who had also doubled.
The lead was extended in the fifth inning off of reliever Raymond Cruz when Adam White doubled. He would score when Montero bunted his way on but the throw by Cruz trying to get Montero at first, sailed down the right field line scoring White and moving Montero to second. Montero scored on RBI double by Dustin Realini and Realini scored on a RBI single by Sanchez and the Captains led 5-0.
The BlueClaws picked up an unearned run to make it 5-1 in the fifth inning off of Mahalic on an RBI single by Dennis Winn that scored Mike Durant who had reached on an error. The hit by Winn was the first hit of the night by the Claws. The Captains tacked on two more runs in the top of the seventh inning off reliever Sergio Escalona on a two RBI single by Jeff Hehr that made it 7-1. The Captains made it 9-1 in the eighth inning when a run scored when Roman Pena grounded into a double play another scored on an RBI double by Matt Brown. The BlueClaws picked up a run off of Kyle Landis in the eighth inning on a RBI single by T.J. Warren and it was 9-2.
Landis relieved Mahalic in the seventh inning and pitched two innings giving up the one run. Vinnie Pestano pitched a scoreless ninth inning. Tejeda took the loss to have his record drop to 3-3.
The Captains and the BlueClaws conclude the series on Sunday at 1:05 PM as the Captains send All Start starter LHP Ryan Miller (7-2, 2.03) to the mound against the Claws RHP Chance Chapman (4-4, 3.15). The game can be heard on AM 1330 WELW, WELW.COM or CAPTAINSBASEBALL.COM.
In Other Games...
- Akron won both games of their doubleheader 9-7 and 11-4. In the two games, OF Trevor Crowe went 4-for-8 with 1 HR and 3 RBI, and 1B/OF Stephen Head went 6-for-6 with 1 HR, 2 RBI and also drew two walks. Akron has now won an unbelievable 16 out of their last 17 games.
- Buffalo won their 4th game in a row, 4-1. LHP David Huff was sensational and got the win going 7 shutout innings and allowed 5 hits, 0 walks and struck out 9. RHP Jeff Stevens with another save, going 2 innings and giving up an unearned run on 1 hit, 1 walk and struck out 5 batters.
- Mahoning Valley lost their third game in a row, 7-5. LHP Russell Young made his professional debut in the start and struggled going 3 innings and giving up 6 hits, walking 1, and striking out 2. Offensively, the Scrappers struggled again as they only put up 7 hits. The only good performance of note was by OF Corteze Armstrong who went 2-for-4 with a walk.
- The GCL Indians game was suspended in the 1st inning.

Akron is on fire and I have to believe that the Indians management has to consider seriously the prospect of promoting several players even if Akron is the finishing ground.
Crowe finally looks ready to fulfill his draft status. Hodges might as well do his finishing at Buffalo. There does not appear any reason to hold back Head or Rodriguez at this time. I think that Martin, Lewis and Newsome need the time in AAA. I don't know if we have the horsepower at Kinston to replace all of these players but it would sure be nice to bring some life to the Buffalo franchise in their last year. They have been real good to the organization in Buffalo and it would be nice if Cleveland could close their last season with prospects rather than hasbeens.
I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of moves go down here in the next few weeks, likely around the all-star break which is only three weeks away.
Gotta believe Crowe may finally be on the move soon and likely be the first to go to Buffalo. Possibly Sardinha before him as he should be in Buffalo (hello, Jason Tyner? Sheece.). Head and J-Rod likely finish the year in Akron. No reason to move them. Newsom and Lewis should be in Buffalo at some point this year, Newsom likely soon than later and Lewis after he gets some more starts.
But, as you suggest, we have to have players in Kinston who can come up and fill the holes. There is no one really deserving of a callup yet or ready, although they may give Drennen a token callup to replace Crowe. Perdomo will surely be replacing Newsom here any day. And someone like Carlton Smith may move up to fill Lewis' spot if he moves up (I can't see them moving Rondon up at such a young age).
