The Indians signed two more draft picks on Thursday: 24th round pick Kevin Fontanez INF and 25th round pick Steve Smith RHP. The Indians have now signed 17 of their 50 draft picks.

Akron catcher Chris Gimenez got a well deserved callup to Buffalo, and catcher Wyatt Toregas was reassigned to Akron. This is a move that should help both players.

Kinston scores 13 runs on 10 hits in the bottom of the second inning

The K-Tribe scored 13 runs on 10 hits, sending 18 men to the plate in a powerful bottom of the second inning, going on to beat Lynchburg 13-8 Thursday night at Grainger Stadium. It was an inning to remember that started with two straight hits from Jared Goedert and Niuman Romero, and a walk to load the bases from Cirilo Cumberbatch. Jason Denham knocked a run-scoring single and Brian Juhl walked to put the K-Tribe up 2-1. Jerad Head belted a three-run triple to the left field corner and Johnny Drennen knocked him in to make the score 6-1. After Beau Mills reached on an error and Nick Weglarz singled, Goedert came up for the second time in the inning and hit a grand slam to the deepest part of the park in left-center to make things 10-1. Lynchburg pitching could not retire the first 11 men to face them in the bottom of the second inning, as Romero drew a four-pitch walk after the home run. Kinston plated another three in the inning on a bases loaded walk from Jerad Head and two-run single by Mills. The scoring chased starter Michael Crotta who pitched one inning, plus 10 batters in the second, giving up 10 runs on seven hits and two walks. For the game, every K-Triber in the lineup had at least one hit and scored at least one run.

Dan Cevette picked up his second win in relief, in a game started by Shawn Nottingham, his first since being sent down from AA Akron. Kinston sweeps the series from the Hillcats, the Indians second sweep of the season. The Indians swept Frederick at Historic Grainger Stadium late last month. The K-Tribe went 5-2 over a seven game home-and-home stretch against Lynchburg including the last four in a row.

Kinston improves to 3-0 on the second half and holds sole possession of first place for the second straight day. They look to extend the win streak with Josh Tomlin (5-2) on the mound on Friday night. Come out to Historic Grainger Stadium for Fireworks Night, first pitch is 7:00 PM.

CAPTAINS BLANKED IN LAKEWOOD 5-0

(Lakewood, NJ) – It was a sluggish start to the second half for the Lake County Captains as Julian Sampson pitched six scoreless innings and the Lakewood BlueClaws had all but one batter in the line up reach base, as they beat the Captains 5-0 on Thursday. With the loss to start the second half, this is the first time since April that the Captains have not been in first place. The Captains went into first place on April 22nd and stayed in first place the rest of the first half on their way to winning the SAL Northern Division title. This is the first time all year that the Captains have been below the .500 mark.

The BlueClaws went out in front in the bottom of the third inning against Captains starter Chris Archer when T.J. Warren got an infield single and went to second on a wild pitch. He went to third on a ground out and scored on another wild pitch to make it 1-0. The Claws added to the lead in the fourth inning on a RBI single by Joel Naughton to make it 2-0.

The Blue Claws made it 4-0 when they scored two runs off of reliever Josh Judy in the fifth inning. A sacrifice fly by Dennis Winn plated one run while a Judy wild pitched scored the second run. The BlueClaws tacked on an unearned run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Warren to make it 5-0.

Archer went 3.1 innings giving up two runs on six hits, walking three and striking out three and watched his record drop to 2-7. Josh Judy relieved Archer with one out in the fourth inning and pitched 2.1 innings allowing three runs, two earned. Joanniel Montero came on after Judy going 1.1 scoreless innings. Gary Campfield pitched a scoreless eighth inning. Sampson got the win to up his record to 4-1.

The Captains and the BlueClaws play game two of the four game series on Friday at 7:05 PM as the Captains send (LHP Ryan Morris (6-1, 2.50) to the mound against the Claws LHP Jacob Diekman (1-4, 5.35). The game can be heard on AM 1330 WELW, WELW.COM or CAPTAINSBASEBALL.COM.
