Go, Go Goleski!
Slugger’s Walk-Off Homer Sends Aeros to 6th Straight Win
AKRON, OH – It could be said the Aeros have a knack for dramatics, but that’s like saying Sidney Poitier is just an actor and Michael Jordan was just a basketball player. Ryan Goleski socked a three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth to beat New Hampshire before 4,492 raucous fans at Canal Park Tuesday night, as the Aeros have now come back to win from 10-0, 6-0, and 6-1 deficits in their last three games. The Aeros won their sixth in a row and moved to 35-26, while the Fisher Cats fell to 23-40.
The Fisher Cats batted around in the fourth to get on the board first. With one down, Akron starter Ryan Edell walked Travis Snider and the next five hitters singled, pushing three runs across the plate. The last of those singles came on a dribbler down the third-base line that Wes Hodges fielded, but threw wildly to first on the run, allowing the fourth run of the inning to score. Edell managed to escape the inning with a strikeout and a fly out, but the Cats added another run in the fifth on three more singles to make it 5-0.
The Aeros knocked out their first run in the fifth when Chris Gimenez ripped a double into the left-field corner with two away and Hodges followed with an RBI single to left as a sliding Gimenez dodged the tag of catcher Brian Jeroloman. New Hampshire got that run back in the seventh on an RBI single by Snider to make it 6-1.
In the last three games however, the Aeros have been at their best when trailing. Akron added single runs in the seventh and eighth innings on an RBI fielder’s choice by Hodges and a Trevor Crowe sacrifice fly to make it 6-3, and reliever T.J. Burton quieted the Cats in the top of the ninth to set the stage for the fireworks.
Gimenez and Hodges led off with singles off Cats closer Zach Dials, and Bronson Sardinha and Matt Whitney drove them home with consecutive RBI hits to center, bringing Akron within a run at 6-5 and putting runners at first and second with no one out. The Aeros tried to advance both runners with a sacrifice, but Nathan Panther couldn’t get the ball far enough from home plate as Jeroloman fired to third for the first out of the inning. That set the stage for Goleski, who took an outside fastball for a ball and fouled off another four-seamer before yanking the next offering from Dials into the trees beyond the left-field fence to set off a mini-mosh pit at home plate.
Burton (1-2) earned the win with a scoreless ninth, while Dials (0-2) suffered the loss and his third blown save of the season as he allowed five runs on five hits in just one-third of an inning. Aeros starter Ryan Edell worked five innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on 12 hits, while walking one and striking out three. Reid Santos was effective in relief for the Aeros as well, tossing three innings and holding New Hampshire to just one run. Fisher Cats starter Brandon Magee remained winless on the year in eight decisions despite tossing six innings of one-run ball. Hodges was 4-5 with two RBI, becoming the first Aero this season with a four-hit game. Goleski finished 2-5, Josh Rodriguez (1-3, two walks) extended his Aeros season-high hitting streak to 14 games, and Sardinha’s ninth-inning knock pushed his hitting streak to 12 straight games.
The Aeros continue the home stand tomorrow at 7:05 p.m., as Akron sends Kevin Dixon (2-4, 4.75 ERA) to the hill against New Hampshire left-hander Ricky Romero (2-3, 6.30 ERA). Wednesday is Family Pack Day at Canal Park with four tickets, four hot dogs, four bags of chips, and four sodas for $48. The game broadcast begins at 6:50 p.m. on SportsRadio 1350 AM and online at www.akronaeros.com.
Kinston Wins 4th In A Row
The Kinston Indians won their fourth game in a row, winning 3-2 against the Salem Avalanche Tuesday night in Virginia. All four wins have been by one run for the K-Tribe.
