Game Recaps 6/2

Five Lake County Captains were named to the SAL All-Star game: Left-handed starters Kelvin De La Cruz, Ryan Miller and Ryan Morris, right-handed closer Vinnie Pestano, and outfielder Roman Pena.

The International League today announced that Bisons LHP Jeremy Sowers has been named the IL Pitcher of the Week for May 26-June 1. Sowers went 2-0 with a 0.69ERA in his two starts for Buffalo during the week.

Aeros closer Randy Newsom was named Bank of America Eastern League Pitcher of the Week today for the week ending June 1st. He is the second Akron player to receive a weekly award this season after LHP David Huff won the award for the week ending May 18th. Newsom recorded two wins, three saves, and posted a 1.80 ERA in five appearances last week.

Catcher Richard Martinez has been added to the Lake County roster and Ramon Hernandez has been reassigned to extended spring training.

Kinston Can't Crack Rocks, Losing the Opener 2-1

The Kinston Indians lost their second game in a row, dropping the opener of a four game series to the Wilmington Blue Rocks, 2-1, Monday night in Delaware. Kinston scored with an RBI double in the first inning from Nick Weglarz but struggled to get anything done the rest of the night. The K-Tribe bats managed just two hits the rest of the way, and the final 17 men were retired in a row by Wilmington pitching.


Wilmington got on the board with an unearned in the fourth inning with an RBI groundout by Jeff Howell that was set up by a passed ball from new catcher Adam Davis. The Blue Rocks took the lead in the sixth on an infield single that hit off of relief pitcher Neil Wagner that sent the runner home from third base. That run belonged to Jeanmar Gomez (2-6) who takes the tough luck loss.

Ed Cegarra, the 19-year old making his second start for Wilmington gets the win after going seven innings and striking out three.

Kinston looks to snap the win streak tomorrow evening with Steven Wright (2-3) on the hill. First pitch is 7:05 in game two of a four game set to complete the seven game road trip.

SHOREBIRDS STOP CAPTAINS 5-4

(Salisbury, MD) – The Delmarva Shorebirds climbed to within 1.5 games of the first place by beating the Lake County Captains 5-4 on Monday. Wally Crancer had three RBI’s to lead the charge for Delmarva. Roman Pena had two RBI’s for the Captains.

The Shorebirds picked up two quick runs in the bottom of the first inning off of Captains starter Chris Archer when lead off man Matt Angle singled. He went to second on Ryan Adams’ single and scored on a double by Joe Nowicki with Adams taking third. After a hit batter and two strike outs, Adams scored when Kieron Pope walked and it was 2-0 Delmarva. The Captains got a run back in the top of the third off Birds starter Sean Gleason when a throwing error by Shorebirds third baseman Tyler Henson scored Michael Valadez to cut the lead in half at 2-1. The Shorebirds scored two more in the third inning. After Joe Mahoney and Henson singled, they both scored on a double Wally Crancer and the lead was 4-1. The Captains battled back with two more runs in the top of the fifth inning when Ron Rivas singled and Adam White walked. They move to second and third on a ground out by Mark Thompson and scored on an two RBI single by Pena to make it 4-3.

The Captains tied it up 4-4 in the sixth off Shorebirds reliever Cliff Flagello when with one out Lucas Montero had an infield single. He went to third on a single by Valdez and scored on a ground out by Rivas. The Shorebirds took the lead back in the bottom of the seventh when reliever Joanniel Montero gave up a single to Nowicki. With one out Josh Judy relieved Montero and Henson gounded out moving Nowicki to second. Nowicki scored on a single by Crancer to make it 5-4.

Archer went four innings and gave up four runs, three earned on six five hits, walking two and striking out six and did not factor in the decision. Montero relieved Archer in the fifth inning and pitched 3.1 innings allowing one run and suffered his second loss to drop his record to 0-2. Josh Judy followed Montero finishing the seventh and pitching the eighth inning. Cliff Flagello picked up the win in relief to up his mark to 2-2 and Mick Mattaliano secured his eleventh save pitching a scoreless ninth inning.

The Captains play game two of the series with Delmarva on Tuesday at 7:05 PM with Captains sending LHP Ryan Miller (7-0, 1.20) to the mound in search of his eighth win against the Shorebirds RHP Luis Noel (5-1, 2.79). The game can be heard on AM 1330 WELW, WELW.COM or CAPTAINSBASEBALL.COM. After Wednesday’s game in Delmarva the Captains will play four games in Hagerstown starting Thursday.
