K-Tribe Loses 17-3

The Kinston Indians surrendered just their third loss of the second half dropping a 17-3 decision to the Potomac Nationals Monday night at Historic Grainger Stadium. The Nationals were all over Kinston pitching scoring in each of the first four innings, including a season-high nine runs given up by the K-Tribe in the fourth inning. Potomac hit five home runs in the game including two by Marvin Lowrance, and one each from former K-Triber Brian Finnegan and former East Carolina Pirate Trevor Lawhorn. Lawhorn went 3-for-5 with three runs scored. He is hitting .302 in his 16 games with Potomac so far this season.

The loss was the worst K-Tribe loss since a 21-8 pounding from Lynchburg back in 2005. The Indians gave up season highs in runs with 17, hits with 18, and home runs with five. Kinston's Carlton Smith (5-5) took the loss. Joe Norrito (6-1) got the win for Potomac.

The Indians will look to take the rubber game of the three game series in the battle of the two teams on top of their respectful divisions. The K-Tribe sends Jeanmar Gomez to do the hill on Tuesday night at 7:00 PM at Historic Grainger Stadium.

CAPTAINS RALLY TO BEAT SHOREBIRDS 4-2

(Eastlake, OH) – Lucas Montero hit a home run from both sides of the plate including a two run homer in the top of the ninth inning off of Shorebirds closer Mick Mattaliano, to propel the Captains to a 4-2 win over Delmarva on Monday. The Captains tied it up just prior to the Montero homer on an error by the Birds Pedro Florimon. This was only the Captains second win this season when they tailed after eight innings. They are 2-24 in games they trail in after eight innings. The Captains upped their second half record to 5-7.

The Shorebirds grabbed the lead in the bottom of the third inning off of Captains starter Ryan Morris on a sacrifice fly by Tyler Henson that scored Jason White and the Shorebirds led 1-0. After a forty minute rain delay, the Captains tied it at 1-1 in the top of the fifth inning on a solo home run by Lucas Montero off of Shorebirds starter Zach Britton. The Shorebirds reclaimed a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning when Henson doubled and eventually scored on a single by Anthony Martinez.

Morris did not factor in the decision going five innings allowing two runs on five hits, walking two and striking out two. John Gaub relieved Morris in the sixth inning and threw two scoreless innings striking out four. Gary Campfield picked up the win pitching a scoreless eighth inning and Kyle Landis got his first save with a scoreless ninth inning. Mattaliano suffered his first loss of the year.

The Captains conclude the two game series on Tuesday before heading to Kannapolis for a four game series starting on Wednesday. Game time Tuesday is 7:05 PM and the Captains will send RHP Jonathan Holt (2-5, 4.07) to the mound against the Shorebirds RHP Sean Gleason (5-1, 2.78). The All Captains games can be heard on AM 1330 WELW, WELW.COM or CAPTAINSBASEBALL.COM.

What happened to Jason Rodriguez? He disappeared from the Scrappers roster. Seems like too high a draft pick to get cut that quickly while undrafted signees like Corteze Armstrong continue to get unwarranted playing time.

Looks like he was released. Odd, yes....but with Walter Diaz moving up to MV, I guess they deemed him expendable. Also, they may be on the cusp of signing a few of the higher profile players like Cord Phelps and the like.

On the league's transaction report, it says that Rodriguez "retired." Man, that was a short career -- 6 games. Homesick?

Any news on the Diaz visa situation? He needs to be in a different league. And where is G Rosario these days? Thanks.

I read somewhere that Rosario is hurt... Why do people like him so much?

I just e-mailed Lastoria today about Diaz, too. I don't know anything but there's got to be a lot more to this story than what Tribe officials have told the press. I read a story about how a few DSL players, a couple years back, were involved with a marriage scam with US Customs, and have been blocked from coming to the States. (The scam involved players taking cash to marry women for the sole purpose of getting them to America.) I can't help but wonder if Diaz were involved with something like that. I've read the Indians' version several times about how it's so hard to get verify documents. Tons of prospects are born in tiny villages without birth certificates, yet they still make it over the States. There's got to be more to this story, and we all know the Cleveland mainstream press won't poke around.

Retired or released...either way, what a short career for Rodriguez, huh? Heart was probably just not in it, especially after a small bonus and making a four figure salary. Some of these guys have bills to pay.

Rosario is not on the GCL roster, but is supposedly in EST. No confirmation one way or another if he is hurt (info on the GCL team is hard to come by). But, it would seem he would have to be as he would be on the roster if he was healthy.

As for Kelvin Diaz.....it is what it is. The Indians just are not talking about him or the situation anymore. Atkins last comment to me on the record about it about 10 months ago: "Visa problems still. That's it. It really is pretty simple. In the Dominican Republic you are born in your home and it is not documented when you are born with the government. Then all of a sudden you become a baseball player, so you take your documentation you have in to get a Visa. That's where it is. We have been dealing with this for two years, and if he were here he would probably be in Kinston right now. It is basically an issue with the government."

I'm sure there is more to this story.....but unfortunately with the Indians unwilling to comment further, and it being in a completely different country and a whole different language, it is really hard to circumvent the Indians for the info on this one. I think it best that the Kelvin Diaz folk tale be laid to rest, as he likely never plays a game stateside. Very unfortunate.

I just noticed the comments concerning Jason Rodriguez. Though he was a marginal prospect his .390 BA at Nevada made him interesting, especially with the significant increase in power his senior year.

However, he is a bit old to be starting his career, and based upon his Nevada bio it appears his father had passed away, perhaps he was under pressure financially (just a guess, but possible).

Art, good tip on his player bio at Nevada. Thanks.
