Daily Recap 7/1

RHP Randy Newsom (finally) has been called up to Buffalo. No word yet on any corresponding moves and who he may replace in Buffalo...but if I were to speculate it is possible that Jeff Stevens or Brian Slocum are on their way to Cleveland.

Forgot to mention this yesterday, but lefty Tony Sipp has been moved up to Kinston to continue his rehab. He pitched one scoreless inning on Monday with two strikeouts, and may not stick in Kinston long.

Also, lots of questions regarding what happened to Trevor Crowe on Monday night. He was a last second removal from the starting lineup, and because of that there was rampant speculation he either was called up to Buffalo or was traded. Actually, what happened is Crowe had a small bruise on his chest that was bothering him when he swung, so he was taken out for precautionary reasons. He was back in the lineup on Tuesday night.

Also, for those wondering why 1B Beau Mills was absent from the Kinston lineup on Sunday and Monday, he had a rash and or allergic reaction in his armpit areas that was painful and affected his swing.

Kinston Drops First Series Since May

Kinston lost its first series since May 15th, dropping the rubber game of a three game set to Potomac 10-2 Tuesday night at Historic Grainger Stadium. Potomac banged out 15 hits on their way to their second straight win against Kinston. It was the first time the K-Tribe dropped back to back games since June 14th.

With Potomac leading 6-1 in the top of the sixth inning, the game got a jolt when Potomac’s Matt Rogelstad ran over Kinston’s Niuman Romero in a run-down, triggering a benches clearing incident. Both Rogelstad and Romero were ejected from the game. Potomac rebounded with back to back home runs from Marvin Lowrance and Aaron Seuss when play resumed. Potomac went on to a four-run inning to put the game away. Kinston managed seven hits in the game, with Romero going 2-for-2 before he was ejected.

Jeanmar Gomez (2-7) took the loss for Kinston, giving up a season high 11 hits in 4 2/3 innings. Matt Meyer and Vinnie Pestano combined for three innings of scoreless relief from the K-Tribe bullpen. Justin Jones (3-1) got the win for Potomac.

The K-Tribe still stands atop the Carolina League Southern Division with an 8-4 second half record. Kinston welcomes in Wilmington for a three game series starting Wednesday night at Grainger Stadium. Shawn Nottingham will take the mound for the K-Tribe.

CAPTAINS WIN ON DAVIS 10TH INNING HOMER

(Eastlake, OH) – Adam Davis hit a home run to lead off the tenth inning off of Shorebirds closer Mick Mattaliano, to lift the Captains to a 6-5 extra inning win over Delmarva on Tuesday. This is the second night in a row the Captains have had a go ahead home run off of Mattaliano. The Captains swept the two game series and upped tier road record to 26-12.

The Captains jumped out on top in the second inning off Shorebirds starter Sean Gleason when Matt Brown singled and went to third on a single by Karexon Sanchez. Brown scored on a ground out by Matt Willard with Sanchez taking second. Sanchez took third on a single by Mark Thompson. Sanchez came home to score when Thompson got in a run down between first and second and was tagged out after Sanchez crossed the plate and it was 2-0.

The Shorebirds tied it at 2-2 in the third off of Captains starter Jonathan Holt on a RBI fielder’s choice ground ball by Matt Angle and an RBI single by Tyler Henson. The Captains regained the lead in the fourth inning when Brown singled and then scored on a double by Sanchez. Sanchez scored when Thompson singled and it was 4-2. The Captains tacked on a run in the fifth when Adam Davis scored on a sacrifice fly by Jeff Hehr to make it 5-2.

Kieron Pope hit a solo homer to lead off the fifth inning and Angle grounded out but plated another run, as the Shorebirds cut the lead to 5-4. The Shorebirds tied it at 5-5 in the eighth against Captains reliever Gary Campfield when Henson reached on a two base throwing error by second baseman Matt Willard and scored on a single by Joe Nowicki.

Holt did not factor in the decision going 4.1 innings allowing four runs on five hits and striking out one. Josh Judy relieved Holt with one out in the fifth inning and threw 2.2 scoreless innings. Campfield picked up his second win in two nights as he went two innings and gave up the unearned run. Kyle Landis got his second save in the last two nights pitching a scoreless tenth inning.

The Captains begin a four game series on Wednesday as the travel to Kannapolis to take on the Intimidators. Game time is 7:05 PM and the Captains will send LHP Kelvin De La Cruz (6-3, 1.47) to the mound against the Intimidators RHP Charlie Shirek (3-4, 3.38). In Other Games...

- Buffalo lost 5-2. LHP David Huff was very good again, going 6 innings and allowing 2 runs on 3 hits, 1 walk and striking out 9. Newcomer Juan Rincon imploded in the 7th giving up 3 runs in two thirds of an inning. 1B Jordan Brown went 2-for-4 with a run, catcher Chris Gimenez went 0-for-2 with a run and 2 walks, and OF Brad Snyder went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

- Akron won 9-1. Lefty Ryan Edell went 6 innings and allowed 1 run on 4 hits, 1 walk, and 6 strikeouts. OF Trevor Crowe stayed hot going 3-for-3 with a 2B and 2 runs scored. OF Stephen Head went 3-for-4 with 2 2B, a HR, and 4 RBI. OF Ryan Goleski chipped in going 2-for-3 with a HR and RBI.

- Mahoning Valley won 6-1. Lefty Russell Young was outstanding, going 5 innings and allowing 1 run on 1 hit, 1 walk and 8 strikeouts. 3B Jeremie Tice went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI, INF Lonnie Chisenhall went 1-for-3 with 2 walks, and 2B Isaias Velasquez went 2-for-5 with 2 2B and an RBI.

- GCL Indians won 6-2. RHP T.J. McFarland continues to pitch well and went 5 innings allowing 1 run on 5 hits, 1 walk, and 6 strikeouts. The Dominican Dandy Abner Abreu went 1-for-3 and hit his second HR of the young season. This kid is going to be special as he gets older and grows into his body. Infielder Jason Smit is still DHing, and went 1-for-3 with a run scored.
