Daily Recaps: 7/3

Happy 4th everyone!

On Thursday Akron 3B Wes Hodges was selected to play in the Futures Game in Yankee Stadium on July 13 for Team USA. He also is one of 60 players currently being considered for the 24-man United States Olympic Team that will be selected on July 16th. The Olympics begin in Beijing, China on August 9th, and outfielder Nick Weglarz is already on the Team Canada roster.

Lefty Dan Cevette has retired. I had just talked to him last Friday in Frederick, but I guess he finally had enough after his last outing when he gave up seven runs in 2/3s of an inning earlier this week.

Kinston Loses Season-High Fourth Straight

The Kinston Indians lost their season-high fourth game in a row, dropping the second of three from the Wilmington Blue Rocks, 3-2, at Historic Grainger Stadium. The Indians surrendered two runs in the third inning on an RBI-double by Derrick Robinson, who later scored on a throwing error while trying to steal third base.

The K-Tribe scored for the first time in two days, answering back in fourth inning. After a pair of walks to Jared Goedert and Carlos Rivero, Niuman Romero knocked an RBI-single into right field. Jason Denham knocked Romero in to tie the score at two.

Jeff Howell knocked a one-out home run on the first pitch he saw from Josh Tomlin in the fifth inning to give the Blue Rocks the lead for good. Tomlin (6-4) drops his fourth game and goes to 1-3 in his eight starts. Matt Meyer struck out two batters from the bullpen, and Tony Sipp and Vinnie Pestano finished with scoreless frames.

The K-Tribe looks to avoid the sweep with a win tomorrow, as Hector Rondon (6-3) takes the hill on the Fourth of July. Limited General Admission tickets are still available for the picnic area and the bleachers, but all reserved seats are sold out. Historic Grainger Stadium will be the site of Independence Day fireworks for the second year in a row, following the game that starts at 7:00 PM.

CAPTAINS INTIMIDATED 10-4

(Kannapolis, NC) – Dale Mollenhaurer hit for the cycle and had four RBI’s and Mark Fleisher had four hits as the Kannapolis Intimidators beat the Lake County Captains on Thursday 10-4. The loss snapped a three game winning streak and drops the Captains record to 3-1 on the road trip. Kannapolis banged out fifteen hits in the game and every batter reached base.

The Intimidators got the bats working early against Captains starter Ryan Miller when they scored three times in the bottom of the first inning. Christian Marrero and Sergio Morales had RBI singles and Morales scored on a wild pitch and it was 3-0.

The Captains tied it up in the fifth inning when Karexon Sanchez led off the inning with a single and went to third on a single by Mark Thompson. Matt Willard doubled scoring Sanchez and moving Thompson to third. Thompson scored on an infield single by Lucas Montero with Willard taking third and then Willard scored on a ground out by Adam White and it was 3-3.

The tied was short lived when, in the bottom of the fifth inning, Dale Mollenhauer hit a two run home run to make it 5-3. Mollenhauer did more damage in the sixth inning, this time against Captains reliever John Gaub, when he doubled home two runs to up the lead to 7-3. Two more runs scored when Sergio Miranda singled home Molenhauer and Fleisher drove home Miranda to make it 9-3. The Captains scored a run in the seventh off of reliever Santo Luis on a RBI single by Adam Davis and it was 9-4. The intimidators tacked on a run in the eighth inning off of Joanniel Montero to close the scoring at 10-4.

Miller took the loss to drop his record to 7-3 going five innings and allowing five runs on a season high eight hits walking three and striking out four. Miller has not won a game since May 18th. Lucas Harrell picked up the win to even his record at 1-1.

The Captains and Intimidators play game three of the four game series on Friday at 7:05 PM. The Captains will send RHP Chris Archer (2-8, 4.05) to the mound against the Intimidators RHP Levi Maxwell (8-2, 3.51). The All Captains games can be heard on AM 1330 WELW, WELW.COM or CAPTAINSBASEBALL.COM.

In Other Games....

- Buffalo lost 7-6 in 13 innings. SS Asdrubal Cabrera went 1-for-6 with a run scored, DH Michael Aubrey went 1-for-6 with a double, 1B Jordan Brown went 1-for-5 with a walk, catcher Chris Gimenez went 2-for-4 with with a run, and OF Brad Snyder went 1-for-4 with two walks and an RBI.

- Akron lost 2-0. OF Trevor Crowe sat out for the third time in the last four games because of a lingering chest issue. OF Bronson Sardinha went 1-for-3 with a double and a walk, and RF Stephen Head continued to showcase his hot bat going 2-for-4. LHP Scott Lewis went 5 innings and gaves up 2 runs on 3 hits a walk and struck out 7 batters. RHP Luis Perdomo went a scoreless inning not allowing a hit with 2 walks and 2 strikeouts.

- Mahoning Valley lost 10-1. The one bright spot was RHP Eric Berger making an impressive professional debut going 3 shutout innings allowing only 1 hit and 1 walk while striking out 3 hitters. SS Lonnie Chisenhall went 1-for-4 with a double and run, and 1B Brock Simpson went 2-for-4.

- The GCL Indians lost 11-6. RHP Brendan Donnelly made his first appearance on his rehab assigment, going just .2 innings and allowing 2 runs on 4 hits while recording 1 strikeout. Catcher Matt McBride is still DHing and playing every other day, and went 1-for-3 with a HR. Helium infield prospect Abner Abreu went 3-for-4 with a double, triple, and HR.
