Daily Recap: 7/9

The Indians promoted RHP J.D. Martin to Class AAA Buffalo on Wednesday. Martin, an Eastern League All-Star, was 7-3 with a 3.40 ERA in 22 appearances (three starts) for Akron. He had recorded 46 strikeouts against only 11 walks in 50.1 innings.

Aeros, Baysox Trade Shutouts in Split
LaPorta Goes 3-for-6 in Debut

AKRON, OH – The Aeros rode the arm of left-hander Scott Lewis in game one for a 3-0 win, but the bats faltered in game two as Bowie returned the favor with a 5-0 victory over Akron to split a doubleheader before 4,117 fans at Canal Park Wednesday night. The Aeros are now 57-34, and held their 4.5-game lead over Bowie (53-39).

Josh Rodriguez, in the leadoff spot for the first time this year, opened the third inning of game one by socking a Chris Tillman offering off the batter’s eye in right-center field to give Akron a 1-0 lead. The Aeros tacked on their other two runs in the sixth inning off Bowie reliever Ryan Keefer. With one down, Matt Whitney walked and Wyatt Toregas launched a two-out, two-run homer down the left-field line for the 3-0 lead. It was the seventh home run in eight games for Toregas, and his third straight game with a blast.

Lewis (4-2) earned the win, allowing just four hits while walking one and striking out two in six innings. He also retired nine straight hitters at one point. Scott Roehl surrendered just a leadoff walk in the seventh to pick up his second save of the season. Tillman (7-3) took the loss after allowing one run on six hits and striking out four in three innings. He left the game with an injury in the fourth after Nathan Panther hit a line drive directly off his foot. Bronson Sardinha was the only Aero with two hits in game one, and Matt LaPorta was 1-3 in his debut with an infield single.

Bowie picked up the first three runs of game two when they loaded the bases with one out in the third. A passed ball allowed the first run to score, and moved the other two runners into scoring position. Nolan Reimold followed with a sacrifice fly, and Matt Wieters doubled off the wall in right to plate the third run. The Baysox added their final two runs in the seventh inning on an error by third baseman Wes Hodges and an RBI double by Wieters.

Zach Clark (1-0) was victorious for Bowie in his first Double-A start, tossing five innings and allowing just four hits and a walk. Jim Deters (0-2) took the loss in his third start of the season, allowing three runs on five hits in 2.2 innings. Chuck Lofgren made his first appearance since June 13th after going on the temporary inactive list and tossed three shutout innings in relief, allowing just one hit with a walk and a strikeout. LaPorta was the only Aero with two hits in game two, and all four Akron hits were singles.

The Aeros will conclude this quick homestand at 7:05 p.m. Thursday against the Baysox. Akron’s Steven Wright (1-1, 4.95 ERA) will square off against Bowie’s Jason Berken (6-3, 4.08 ERA) in the finale of this three-game series. It will be another Thirsty Thursday at Canal Park, with 12-ounce fountain drinks available for just $1 from the time gates open at 6 p.m. until the end of the third inning. K-Tribe Game at Lynchburg Postponed

Because of heavy rains the Kinston Indians game at Lynchburg has been postponed. The K-Tribe will play a double header tomorrow at Lynchburg’s city stadium starting at 6:05.

CAPTAINS AND CRAWDADS SPLIT DH

(Eastlake, OH) – The Captains and Hickory Crawdads split a double header on Wednesday with the Captains winning game one 3-2 on a walk off single by Mark Thompson and the Crawdads taking the night cap 6-4 despite the Captains hitting three home runs. This was the ninth double header for the Captains this year. They played five last year. The Captains record in the second half is 10-10.

In game one, Roman Pena homered off of Crawdads starter Rafael De Los Santos in the first inning to give the Captains a 1-0 lead. The Crawdads got to Captains starter Joey Mahalic in the fourth inning when Matt Hague doubled in a run and Tom Hagan singled another home to make it 2-1. The Captains tied it up at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning when Karexon Sanchez doubled home Pena. The Captains loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth inning with no one out against Crawdads reliever Adam Simon when Thompson singled to drive in Karexon Sanchez with the game winner.

Josh Judy went three scoreless relief innings to get the win an up his record to a team leading 8-0. Mahalic went six innings allowing two runs on six hits. Captains pitching recorded 16 ground ball outs and only two outs were recorded in the air. Simon did not record an out and saw his record fall to 0-2.

In game two, the Dads got to Joanniel Montero with four runs in the first inning on six singles. Eric Huber had a two RBI single that was followed by RBI’s by Ronald Pena and Danny Bomback and it was 4-0. The Captains chipped away at the lead in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single by Matt Brown that scored Adam Davis and it was 4-1.

The Crawdads extended their lead on two solo home runs in the second inning off the bats of Albert Laboy and Matt Hague and it was 6-1. The Captains hit two solo home runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth inning off of reliever Ronald Uviedo. Roman Pena hit his team leading ninth home run and Richard Martinez hit his first homer to cut the lead to 6-3. Thompson led off the bottom of the seventh with his fifth home run but the rally fell short at 6-4.

Montero took the loss giving up six runs on eight hits and his record fell to 1-3. Rob Bryson made his Captains debut pitching two scoreless innings. Bryson was acquired by the Cleveland Indians in the CC Sabathia trade from Milwaukee. Paolo Espino threw a scoreless inning and Jonathan Holt pitched two scoreless innings as well. Matt McSwain did not factor in the decision going four innings and only allowing one run on two hits. Uviedo got the win to go to 2-1.

The Captains and Crawdads conclude the series on Thursday at 11:05 AM with the Captains sending LHP Ryan Miller (7-3, 2.40) to the mound against the Crawdads RHP Bradley Clapp (2-6, 3.64). All Captains games can be heard on AM 1330 WELW, WELW.COM or CAPTAINSBASEBALL.COM.

- Buffalo won 9-5. SS Asdrubal Cabrera went 2-for-5 with a HR and 2 RBI for his fourth straight multi-hit game. 2B Tony Graffanino made his Buffalo debut after being activated, going 1-for-2. DH Michael Aubrey went 3-for-5 with a 2B and 3 RBI, and catcher Chris Gimenez went 1-for-4 with 2 RBI and 2 Ks.

- Mahoning Valley lost 5-3. LHP Eric Berger made his second professional appearance and went 5 innings allowing 1 run on 4 hits, 1 walk and struck out 6. SS Lonnie Chisenhall was 1-for-4, 3B Jeremie Tice was 1-for-3 with a walk, and OF Ryan Blair was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

- The GCL Indians split s doubleheader winning 5-1 and losing 11-9. In Game One, LHP T.J. McFarland was good once again going 5 innings and allowed no runs on 4 hits, a walk and had two strikeouts. O Delvi Cid was 2-for-3 with an RBI and walk, 3B Abner Abreu was 1-for-3 with a 2B and walk, and 1B Adam Abraham was 2-for-4 with an RBI. In Game Two, RHP Clayton cook went 1.2 innings and allowed 2 runs on 5 hits, 2 walks and did not strike anyone out. DH Matt McBride went 2-for-5, 1B Rafael Vera went 3-for-5 with an RBI, and OF John Allman went 3-for-4 with 3 RBI.
