Kinston loses, Romero's streak continues

Kinston's Niuman Romero extended his hit streak to a Carolina League season high 19 games, but it wasn't enough as Kinston lost to Winston-Salem 7-3 Monday night at Historic Grainger Stadium. Romero went 2-for-4 smacking a single in his first at bat to extend his hitting streak to 19 games, the most in the Carolina League this season. A two-out single in the eighth ensured Romero of his fifth straight two-hit game to give him 10 multi-hit games over the span of the streak. Romero started the streak on June 22nd with a batting average of .256, his average now stands at .310.

After an hour and a half rain delay to start the evening, Jeanmar Gomez struck out the first two Warthogs he faced. Winston-Salem then brought the bats, though, as they collected five straight hits and four runs, including a solo home run by Brandon Allen and a two-run home run by Estee Harris.

The Indians responded in the bottom half off of Major League closer Bobby Jenks, making a rehab appearance for Winston-Salem. Singles from Jason Denham and Beau Mills, set up a sacrifice fly RBI from Jared Goedert off the big-league reliever.

Winston-Salem responded with a run in the third, but Kinston drew within two in the fourth on a Jerad Head two-run double making the score 5-3. Winston-Salem added two insurance runs in the sixth, the first two scored off K-Tribe reliever Tony Sipp. Sipp relieved Jeanmar Gomez (3-8), who took the loss giving up five runs in five innings.

Kinston will play an early morning finale at 11:00 AM Tuesday to close out this series with the Warthogs. The Indians have insured a series split, but a win tomorrow would give them the edge in the season series, as the teams have split the first 14 contests between them. Sung-Wei Tseng (0-2) will make his second start for the K-Tribe.
