Daily Recap: 7/19

On Saturday, Akron placed RHP TJ Burton on the temporary inactive list and activated OF Matt LaPorta from the inactive list.

1Bman Chris Nash has been assigned to the GCL Indians on a rehab assignment. Nash has struggled this season with various injuries ranging from a strained Lat, to a sore shoulder to most recently a triceps problem. Assuming all goes well on the rehab Nash will likely be activated for the Lake County Captains sometime within the next couple of weeks to hopefully give the Captains a much needed offensive boost.

Carmona Ready to Roll?

Fausto Carmona pitched 5 strong innings allowing 1 run on 9 hits (8 singles) to pick up the win as the Aeros cruised to a 7-2 win over the Erie Seawolves. Carmona induced 9 ground ball outs and 2K's in his 15 outs in what likely may be his final rehab start. Kevin Dixon pitched the final 4 innings allowing 1 run to pick up the unconventional save.

The Aeros got on the board in the first inning as Trevor Crowe (1-for-4) ignited the offense with an infield single to 3rd. Crowe then stole 2nd base on a 3-2 offering to Josh Rodriguez who struck out, before swiping 3rd base with LaPorta at the dish. LaPorta then brought Crowe home with a sac fly to center field. Crowe later added an RBI groundout.

Wyatt Toregas landed the big blow with a 2-run HR to LF in the 4th. The HR was Toregas 9th in just 81ABs since being sent back down to AA. Stephen Head finished 3-for-4 with an RBI.

Key(s) Errors & Walks lead to the K-Tribe rout

The Kinston Indians cruised to a comfortable 8-1 win over Frederick Keys at Grainger Stadium inspite of only picking up 3 hits.

The K-Tribe amassed 10 walks and took advantage of 3 errors by the Keys to make a winner of Josh Tomlin who spun two scoreless innings in relief of Shawn Nottingham. Nottingham continued his resurgence since moving into the K-Tribe rotation (2.79ERA) by allowing 1 run of just 3 hits through 6 innings - it marked the first time this year that Nottingham had made it through 6 innings since moving from the AA bullpen to the High-A rotation (6 starts).

The game was tied at 1 heading into the bottom of the 8th when the K-Tribe put 7 on the board on bases loaded walks to Carlos Rivero and Jason Denham, a bases loaded HBP for Cirillo Cumberbatch, a 2-run single by Jared Head and a 2-run scoring fielding error by Keys 3Bman Billy Rowell.

Captains Comeback falls short

The Lake County Captains fell 7-5 against the Greenville Drive inspite of mounting a mini comeback.

The Drive got to Captains starter Ryan Morris (7-3) for 5 runs in the 2nd inning, 4 of them coming on 3 straight two out singles by Che-Hsuan Lin, Carlos Fernandez-Oliva and Jered Stanley.

Jon Holt gave the Captains a chance to respond with 3 scoreless innings in relief and respond they did with 2 runs of their own in the 4th on an RBI single by Matt Brown and an RBI groundout by Ron Rivas.

Paolo Espino allowed a 2-out, 2-run HR to Drive DH David Marks to seemingly give Greenville an unassailable 7-2 lead. However, the Captains responded again in the 7th with 3 runs of their own capped by a 2-out, 2 run triple for Matthew Brown which brought the Captains back within 2. But, the Captains couldn't get that big hit to tie it up in the late innings.

Scrappers shut out 3-0

P.J. Zocchi only gave up two hits over 5 innings of work, but they were two big hits. The 2007 36th round draft pick allowed a solo HR to the Williamsport Crosscutters catcher Travis D'Arnaud in the first and a 2-run HR to LFer Steve Susdorf in the 4th to provide more than enough offense for the Crosscutters to pick up the W.

The Scrappers were shut-out for 5 innings by Phillies 18th round pick in this years draft, Tyler Cloyd.

Lonnie Chisenhall & Brock Simpson were the only offensive performances of note for the Valley, both going 2-for-4.

In other games.....

- Buffalo was rained out and will play a DH on Sunday. David Huff and Bryan Bullington will start the two games for the Herd.

- GCL Indians fell 3-2. RHP Danny Salazar rebounds from a tough outing last time out going 5IP allowing 2 runs. 1Bman Chris Nash made his debut on a rehab assigment (at DH) going 0-for-3. Abner Abreu finished 1-for-4 with his 9th double.

- DSL Indians win 2-1. 6'6" LHP Elvis Arajuo spun 5 scoreless innings just 4 days after his 17th birthday to improve to 3-0, 1.46ERA - definitely one to watch for next season. DH Rolando Petit (2-for-3) and RF Darling Read (1-for-4) drove in the Indians runs.
