Perdomo Traded To Cardinals

The Cleveland Indians today announced the club has acquired RHP ANTHONY REYES from the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for RHP LUIS PERDOMO.

Reyes, 26, has split the 2008 season between the St. Louis bullpen and AAA Memphis rotation. He was on the Cardinals’ opening day roster and posted a mark of 2-1 w/a save and a 4.91 ERA in 10 relief outings (14.2IP, 16H, 8R/ER, 2HR, 3BB, 10K), recoding scoreless outings in 6 of 10 appearances. The Whittier, CA native was on the Major League disabled list from June 16-July 5 with a right elbow sprain. Between his 2 stints in St. Louis and the DL he has gone 2-3 w/a 3.25 ERA in 11 starts for Memphis (52.2IP, 51H, 19ER, 4HR, 21BB, 47K) and has limited AAA hitters to a .250 (51-195) average against.

Reyes has pitched his entire pro career in the Cardinals organization after he was selected in the 15th round of the 2003 draft out of the University of California. He has appeared at the big league level over each of the last 4 seasons since 2005 w/St. Louis and owns a career Major League ERA of 5.38 in 53 games/38 starts (10-24 record, 220.2IP, 214H, 132ER, 168K). He started and won Game 1 of the 2006 World Series at Detroit for the eventual World Champions (8.0+IP, 4H, 2R, 1BB, 4K). His minor league career record is 18-12 w/a 3.23 ERA in 71 starts (409.0IP, 347H, 147ER, 435K), including a career Triple A ERA of 3.17 (53GS, 304.0IP, 253H, 107ER, 77BB, 298K, 3.9 K/BB ratio). He was the Top Pitching prospect in the St. Louis system and among the Top 100 Overall Minor League Prospects according to Baseball America entering both the 2005 and 2006 seasons.

Perdomo, 24, is currently on the AA Akron roster where he has appeared in 9 games in relief (2-0, 3.52ERA, 9G, 15.1IP, 12H, 6ER). He began the year at A Kinston.

This is exactly the kind of trade that has to make you scratch your head.

Perdomo was probably a top 20 Indians prospect this year and we traded him for a guy who probably would have been dropped from the Cardinals 40-man roster this winter. Believe me, I live in St. Louis and I know how fed up they are with Reyes.

This is a reclamation project that couldn't be reclaimed by Dave Duncan. Unless our pitching coach is going to become Leo Mazzone tomorrow you aren't going to find a pitching coach who could do a better job and the only way Reyes gets reclaimed is pure luck.

So, we got a guy who is out of options after this year who has underperformed (10-24). In my opinion he has no more future than Bullington or Weaver. They are just collecting other people's trash. That is fine when they are minor league signees but giving up a guy like Perdomo for a guy just because he used to be a top prospect, who is 26 years old and out of options is just plain stupid and grasping at straws.

Small market teams don't blow trades. That would make us the Pittsburgh Pirates (see Nady trade for their poor return where they took a guy hitting like .215 in AA as the centerpiece of the deal).

Buying low seldom works. It is OK when the guys don't cost you prospects but giving up a real prospect and praying this guy turns it around is just stupid management

why did they give up on perdomo???

This was a real smart trade by Shapiro. Although Reyes is a high risk candidate and will likely be a FA at the end of the year, he at least has a chance. Perdomo, who is already 24, will be a six year FA at the end of this year. He just reached AA and had no chance of making the 40 man with all the additions this year. Sometimes things work out when you make a minor trade like this which has nothing but upside. Real smart move IMO.

Reyes:

37 HR in 220 ML innings, 35 HR in 340 minor league innings. Dave Duncan TRIED to get him to understand that those stats were a result of trying to be a power pitcher when his stuff did not dictate that he was. Tried to get him to use his sinker more to avoid the incredible number of HRs.

Was on the DL for a month with a bad elbow this year. He also had elbow injuries his sophomore and junior seasons in college. He also had shoulder inflammation in 2004.

Is out of options after this year meaning he is like Guthrie was.

Shapiro said that Reyes was "pitching depth at AAA". The last guy he said that about that we traded for was Jeriome Robertson after we traded Luke Scott and Willy Taveras for him. That worked out well, didn't it?

One thing that is true: Perdomo was going to be a 6-year free agent after this year and we would have had to roster him. If the Indians didn't think they were going to have the roster spot for him then it was good to get something for him now. One other thing: I think by the new CBA rules Reyes is a 6-year minor league free agent if we try to DFA him since he signed during the 2003 season, as well. Could be wrong about that but when I talked to someone in the MLB office that is what they said.

If Reyes wasn't out of options it would have been a great trade. Given that we are trying to compete in 2009, and he can be a 6-year free agent if we try to DFA him and stash him at Buffalo, I see it as a bad deal.

People have said that guys like Howry, Elarton and even Millwood worked out. However, for each of them all it cost us was money. No prospects. Perdomo is not the best prospect in the world but he was a prospect and better than a lot of prospects that are being traded in deals this July.

So, not a smart move at all, in my opinion. A gamble by a desparate GM. Will the gamble work? Let's hope so, because Perdomo will be worth something in the future. If Reyes doesn't work out this year he will most likely go the way of Scott Stewart and Jeriome Robertson, essentially NEVER being worth anything where the guys traded for them become solid major league contributors.

These kinds of gambles are what KC and Pittsburgh do. Note where they are, perenially, in the standings!

Hey dennis,

Don't try to kill the messenger! This is a minor trade that nets the Tribe a potential something for nothing. Everything you say about Reyes could be absolutely true and it changes nothing. Perdomo is not a prospect as much as we would like to think so. After six years he finally reached AA where he has performed with mediocrity. If you are going to tell me seriously that Perdomo stood the slightest chance of being rostered, then there is little to discuss. His command and secondary pitches are not ML level. Maybe he will get it together in a couple of years but to the Indians, Perdomo stood as much chance as the proverbial snowball in hell. Reyes might not be worth much but so what. He is light years ahead of Perdomo who had no value to the Tribe. Real good trade IMHO.

When I clicked on the "comments" box ready to post and read some of those already here, my first thought was, "Oh, crap, I'm actually on the same side as Dennis." But, alas, I too found this to be a head scratcher. I don't mind all the Indians' recent reclamation projects (Bullington, Jackson, Meloan), but all those came at little/no cost/risk. Perdomo is a kid flame thrower with some lovable stats.

Tony, what are your thoughts?

Not sure I would call this a head scratcher of a deal. To me, this deal was part of the Blake trade, one which we got Deloan who to me is much better prospect than Perdomo.

To get an upgrade from Perdomo to Deloan and then essentially Reyes and Santana for Blake.....I like it.

Now, I agree the pickup of Reyes is sort of puzzling if indeed he is out of options next year. Still, I view him as a candidate they will evaluate for a rotation spot next year by getting him roughly 12-13 starts in Buffalo/Cleveland the next 10 weeks and then an entire offseason and spring training. I think it is a worthwhile gamble, and as we have seen sometimes a change of scenery helps (Guthrie, Phillips).
