Daily Recap: 7/16

On Wednesday, USA Baseball announced 23 of the 24 members that will make up the 2008 U.S. Olympic Baseball Team which will compete in the Beijing Olympic Games from August 8-24 (Baseball competition August 13-23). RHP JEFF STEVENS who is currently pitching at AAA Buffalo and INF/OF MATT LaPORTA who is currently playing at AA Akron have both been named to the team.

DRIVE STOPS CAPTAINS 2-1

(Greenville, SC) – The Lake County Captains offense continues to struggle as they were defeated by the Greenville Drive 2-1 on Wednesday. Over their last four games, the Captains have scored only three runs. Three games they have scored one run and they were shutout in the other game. Over their last seven games, they have yet to get more than six hits in a game. The Drive was only bale to muster six hits off of the Captains pitching staff.

The Captains got on the board in the top of the first against Drive starter Terumasa Matsuo when Adam Davis tripled and then scored when Roman Pena grounded out to make it 1-0. Davis looked like he would be thrown out on the triple but a great slide avoided the tag at third and led to the Captains run. The Drive tied it up in the sixth off of Captains starter Joey Mahalic on a RBI single by Che-Hsuan Lin. After Carlos Fernandez singled, Mahalic was relieved by Paolo Espino who gave a sacrifice fly to Ryan Kalish and the Drive led 2-1.

Mahalic went five innings and allowed two runs on four hits, walking two and striking out two and saw his record fall to 6-3. Espino pitched two scoreless innings allowing a hit and struck out three. Matsuo upped his record to 4-3 throwing six innings and allowing the one run on four hits, walking one and striking out four. Felix Ventura pitched 1.1 innings and picked up his 11th save of the year.

The Captains continue the series in Greenville on Thursday at 7:00 PM as the Captains will send RHP Chris Archer (2-8, 3.64) against the Drive RHP Chad Povich (6-3, 3.29). All Captains games can be heard on AM 1330 WELW, WELW.COM or CAPTAINSBASEBALL.COM.

BIG SECOND INNING CARRIES SCRAPPERS TO THIRD STRIGHT WIN

LOWELL, MA- The Scrappers opened a six game road trip Wednesday night in Lowell, Massachusetts against the Spinners. Scoring fist has been good to the Scrappers this season and the struck first scoring six runs in the top of the second. In the inning the Scrappers collected three singles and one double by Doug Pickens and Juan Valdes added a bases loaded walk. The Spinners also helped the Scrappers cause committing three errors in the inning.

The Spinners scored two in the fourth and two in the fifth of Scrappers Kaimi Mead and led 6-4 after five innings. In the sixth inning Brian Grening entered the game for the Scrappers and worked two scoreless innings while striking out five.

Offensively the spinner relief pitching held the Scrappers off the board for the next six innings, so going to the ninth. In the top of the ninth the Scrappers went down one, two, three. In the bottom of the ninth Wilfredo Ramirez worked his second inning of relief and retired the side with some help defensively from his friends.

With the 6-4 win over the Spinners the Scrappers have now won a season high three straight and are 13-15 on the season.

In Other Games...

- Buffalo and Akron are still on their All Star break, and Kinston had an off day. The GCL Indians were rained out once again.
