Daily Recap: 7/18

Outfielder Trevor Crowe was activated from the disabled list on Friday after missing two weeks with a strained left intercostal muscle. He is hitting .325 with four homers and 26 RBI for Akron.

INF Jorge Velandia was activated in Buffalo on Friday after having been outrighted by the Cleveland Indians. To make room for Velandia, INF Chris De La Cruz has been placed on the disabled list.

Just a reminder, Indians RHP Fausto Carmona will return to Canal Park Saturday night to make his second rehab start for Akron.

Akron Offense Stifled in 3-1 Loss
Carmona to Start for Akron Saturday Night

AKRON, OH – Lauren Gagnier locked up Akron’s lineup for six innings and Erie managed just enough offense to sneak past the Aeros 3-1 before 8,137 fans on Fireworks Night at Canal Park Friday night. The Aeros fell to 61-37 with their second straight loss, while the SeaWolves upped their record to 41-58.

The SeaWolves got on the board in the fourth off Akron starter Ryan Edell, who retired the first nine men he faced. Shawn Roof started the fourth with a double and Casper Wells – who had four extra-base hits including a grand slam in the series opener Thursday – singled him home on a rip to center to make it 1-0. Pedro Cotto added another RBI rip in the fifth to give Erie a two-run lead.

The Aeros tacked on their run in the fifth inning without the benefit of a hit. Brandon Chaves led off with a walk and stole second base. Trevor Crowe followed with a fly out to center field as Chaves advanced to third, and Josh Rodriguez then grounded out to shortstop to plate Chaves and cut the lead in half at 2-1. Erie added an insurance run on a two-out RBI double by Dusty Ryan in the eighth to make it 3-1.

Gagnier (1-0) earned the win in his second Double-A start of the year, tossing six innings of one-run ball. Casey Fien picked up his 11th save of the year, pitching a perfect ninth. Edell (5-6) took the loss, but surrendered just two runs (one earned) on four hits with three strikeouts in five innings. Left-hander Chuck Lofgren tossed two scoreless innings of relief, and Bronson Sardinha and Matt Whitney were the only Aeros with two hits.

The Aeros and SeaWolves square off in game three of this four-game set Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. Indians starter Fausto Carmona (0-0, 0.00 ERA) will make a rehab start for Akron as he works back from a left hip strain. The sinker-baller is 10-13 in 30 starts in his Akron career from 2003-2005. The game broadcast begins at 6:50 p.m. on SportsRadio 1350 AM and online at www.akronaeros.com.

K-Tribe Clips Keys 5-2

Carlton Smith pitched seven strong innings, as the K-Tribe beat the Frederick Keys 5-2, at Historic Grainger Stadium. Smith (7-5)won his second game in a row, giving up just six hits and two earned runs, not allowing a hit past the fourth inning.

Down 2-0, the Indians struck big in the bottom of the fourth with six straight men reaching to score three runs. Carlos Rivero drove in Beau Mills with an RBI-double to plate the first run. Cirilo Cumberbatch tied the game with a bases loaded hit-by-pitch, and Alex Castillo's RBI-single gave the Indians a 3-2 lead they would not relinquish. In the fifth inning, an RBI-single by Mills plated Johnny Drennen, and Mills came home on a run-scoring double by Jason Denham. Denham went 3-for-3, posting his 13th multi-hit game of the season and his first three hit outing.

The K-Tribe now improves to 16-11 on the season, just a half game back of Myrtle Beach for first place in the Carolina League Southern Division's second half. Kinston will end the series and homestand Saturday night at Historic Grainger Stadium. Shawn Nottingham (1-1, 3.13) will take the hill for Kinston for the 7pm start. Saturday night is Grady Sizemore T-shirt night at the ballpark, with the first one thousand fans getting the former K-Tribers collectable.

CAPTAINS WIN, CAPTAINS WIN

(Greenville, SC) – Adam White hit a two out, two RBI double in the seventh inning to lift the Captains to a 3-1 win over the Greenville Drive Friday. Captain’s pitching was dominant striking out thirteen and only allowing one unearned run on three hits against the second best hitting club in the SAL. With the win, the Captains snapped a five game losing streak.

The Drive scored an unearned run off of Captains starter Kelvin De La Cruz in the bottom of the first inning when Che-Hsuan Lin scored on a wild pitch by De La Cruz after he had reached on an error to start the inning and the Drive led 1-0. The Captains got an unearned run of their own in the top of the third off of Drive starter Ryne Lawson when Cristo Arnal scored on a throwing error by third baseman Thomas Di Benedetto to tie it at 1-1.

The Captains took the lead in the seventh inning when Michael Valdez was hit by reliever Jordan Craft. Two batters later Crsito Arnal walked. With two outs White doubled off the right field wall to score both runners and the Captains led 3-1.

De La Cruz notched win number eight by going six innings allowing the one unearned run on three hits, walking one and striking out a season tying high eight batters. John Gaub followed De La Cruz in the seventh and threw two scoreless innings striking out two. Kyle Landis pitched the ninth inning and picked up his third save. Craft took the loss and saw his record fall to 0-5.

The series wraps up on Saturday at 7:00 PM with the Captains sending LHP Ryan Morris (7-2, 3.11) to the mound to face Drive LHP Felix Doubront (9-6, 3.50). All Captains games can be heard on AM 1330 WELW, WELW.COM or CAPTAINSBASEBALL.COM.

SCRAPPERS LOSE ON WALK OFF IN THE NINTH 4-3

LOWELL, MA- In the final game of the three game series the Scrappers were looking for the sweep, but the Spinners scored first in the bottom of the first. It was a Mitch Denning single then Jeff Natalie followed with an RBI double.

The Scrappers tied the game at one in the top of the second when Walter Diaz worked a bases loaded walk. Then the Spinners came back to plate two runs in the third when Luis Suymoza had a two RBI single and the Spinners led 3-1 after three full innings. In the fourth the Scrappers came back to tie the game at three on a Spinner throwing error and a RBI ground out by Lonnie Chisenhall.

Relief pitching took over for both teams for the next three innings and we would move to the top of the eight inning still tied 3-3. In the eighth the Scrappers would threaten on a one out double by Ramon Hernandez, but could not push across the go ahead run. The Spinners worked a one out walk off of reliever Garrett Rieck, but then Rieck picked off the runner and retired the third hitter and we went to the ninth still tied at 3-3.

In the ninth the Scrappers would again threaten but be held off the scoreboard by the Spinners relief pitching. In the bottom of the ninth the spinners put a runner at third on a throwing error and then won the game when John Hee came up with the winning single. FINAL Spinners 4 Scrappers 3.


In Other Games....

- Buffalo won 16-3. LHP Zach Jackson continues to play well since joining Buffalo, going 1 inning and allowing 2 hits, no walks and striking out 2. In four appearances at Buffalo, Jackson has pitched 6.2 innings and allowed 1 run, 5 hits, 1 walk and struckout 6. RHP Jeff Stevens went 2 innings of shutout ball and allowed 1 hit, 1 walk and stuck out 5. DH Michael Aubrey went 1-for-4 with a HR and 5 RBI. 1B Jordan Brown went 1-for-2 with a 2B, 2 RBI and 4 walks. C Chris Gimenez went 3-for-6 with a 2B and RBI.

- The GCL Indians were once again rained out as their game was suspended in the 4th inning.
