Daily Recap: 08/11

LHP Scott Lewis was named Eastern League Pitcher of the Week today for the week ending August 10th. In two starts last week Lewis was unbelievable, and in 13.1 innings allowed just one unearned run.


K-Tribe power past Hillcats

Carlos Santana and John Drennen both homered powering the Kinston Indians to a comfortable 10-1 win over the Lynchburg Hillcats on Monday night in front of 1,336 fans at Grainger Stadium. The win was the Indians 5th straight and sent their attendance to a new record 115,326 with 8 home games left to play.

Santana got the Indians on the board in the first inning launching his 3rd Indians home run, the first at Grainger stadium, for a 1-0 lead. Drennen gave the Indians all the cushion they would need in the 2nd inning hitting his second home run in as many days, a 3-run shot, for a 4-0 lead.

The Indians put an exclamation point on the game in the 5th, plating 6 runs and sending 12 men to the plate as Carlos Rivero, Niuman Romero, Matt McBride, Drennen (2) and Lucas Montero drove in runs.

The outburst made a winner of Hector Rondon (11-5) who allowed only a solo HR and a pair of singles in 6.2 innings of work, walking one and striking out 5 improving to 3-0 with a 2.78ERA over his last 4 starts.

Drennen finished the night 2-for-3 with a HR and 5RBI. Carlos Rivero (2-for4) and Niuman Romero (2-for-5) the only other Indians with multi-hit nights.


Millers winless streak continues, but Captains rally in 10.

Ryan Miller must've thought that allowing only 1 run in 5 innings of work would bring an end to his winless streak, but the Captains bullpen and defense blew a 3-run lead late before rallying past the Columbus Catfish 11-8 in 10 innings.

Miller, now 12 starts since his last win, allowed only 1 run in the 5th inning before departing with the Captains ahead 4-1.

The Catfish rallied for 2-runs in the bottom of the 7th against Captains reliever John Gaub to cut the deficit to 4-3, before the Captains added 2 of their own in the top of the 8th on RBI singles by Chris Nash and Adam White to stretch the lead back to 6-3.

It would all unravel for the Captains in the bottom of the 8th as a pair of errors from Karexon Sanchez and Chris Nash would lead to 3 unearned runs against Captains reliever Garrison Campfield capped off by a 2-out single by Catfish Gregory Sexton to tie the game at 6-6.

The Captains would rally again in the 10th inning as Mark Thompson stroked a bases loaded triple, before Juan Valdes added some insurance with a 2-out, 2-run double to put the Captains up 11-6.

The Catfish would get 2 back in the bottom of the inning on a 2-out, 2-run HR against Garrett Rieck, but the Captains would hold on 11-8.

Josh Judy (12-1!!!! As a reliever!!) would get the final out in the 8th and work a scoreless 9th to pick up the win.

Matthew Brown (3-for-5) and Chris Nash (3-for-5) both with big offensive nights for Lake County.


In other games...

- Buffalo lose 5-4 to Lehigh Valley. Bryan Bullington allowed 4ER in 6IP. Tom Mastny (2-1) took the loss allowing an unearned run in the 8th. Jordan Brown (3-for-4, 2B) the lone offensive standout.

- Akron with a scheduled day off.

- Scrappers rally from 4-1 deficit to beat Tri-City 6-4 with a 5-run 5th inning. Erik Berger (3IP, 6H, 3ER) with his first rough start as a pro. Brian Grening (1-0) picked up his first pro win allowing 1 run in 2IP. Isaias Velsquez finished the night 2-for-3 after replacing Lonnie Chisenhall who left the game after being hit by a pitch on the back of his right hand. X-Rays on the hand were negative and Chisenhall is listed as day-to-day with a contusion.

- GCL Indians lose 5-3 to Yankees. Chris Jones (3-3) roughed up for 5R/ER in 5IP. Abner Abreu with a good night on offense hitting his 14th double and 9th home run as part of a 2-for-4 night to snap out of a 1-for-17 skid.
