K-Tribe Wins In A Rout
The Kinston Indians scored double-digit runs for the second straight night, winning 12-1, in another blowout of the Salem Avalanche Friday at Historic Grainger Stadium. The Indians pounded out 13 hits in the win.
The K-Tribe jumped all over Salem starter Douglas Arguello in the bottom of the first, sending ten men to the plate and scoring four runs in the opening frame on two hits. Arguello, walked four batters in the first inning and also had two wild pitches. Arguello failed to get out of the second inning, facing four batters and not getting an out. Kinston scored four more runs in the second inning, batting around to take an 8-0 lead. Arguello failed to get out of the second inning.
Kinston infielder Carlos Rivero was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBIs for Kinston. Niuman Romero was 2-for-5 with two RBIs, Cirilo Cumberbatch also had two hits.
Kinston starter Carlton Smith threw a gem with five shutout innings and five strikeouts. He did not allow a hit until the fourth innings, allowing just two singles and four overall baserunners. The only blemish for the K-Tribe was a solo homer by Salem's Tim Torres off of Sung-Wei Tseng. Neil Wagner, Matt Meyer, and Vinnie Pestano all turned in scoreless innings from the K-Tribe bullpen.
Kinston takes on Salem for game three of the four game series Saturday night at Historic Grainger Stadium. The 7pm start features free rally towels to the first 1,000 fans. Kinston's Shawn Nottingham will toe the rubber for the Indians.
CAPTAINS WIN A THRILLER
(Eastlake, OH) – Mark Thompson hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the tenth inning as the Lake County Captains rallied from a six run deficit to defeat the Delmarva Shorebirds 8-7 in a game that was suspended the night before. This was the Captains 9th walk off win of the year. Delmarva took care of the Captains in the scheduled game 9-3 on the strength of two home runs and five RBI’s from Tyler Henson.
The first game, which was suspended in the second inning on Thursday night due to rain and lightning, was picked up with the Shorebirds leading 4-0 and the Captains batting. Prior to the suspension, the Shorebirds got the long ball going early against Captains starter Chris Archer as Matt Angle led off the game with a solo home run. The next batter Ryan Adams homered as well and it was 2-0. The Shorebirds tacked on four more runs and they led it 6-0 going into the bottom of the sixth. The Captains put up a run in run in the sixth and five in the seventh highlighted by two RBI hits by Mark Thompson and Richard Martinez and it was tied at 6-6.
The Shorebird put two runners on in the eighth inning against Paolo Espino who was relieved by Kyle Landis. Lands gave up a single to Pedro Florimon and the Shorebirds got the lead back 7-6. The Captains tied it up in the bottom of the ninth inning when Chris Nash hit a sacrifice fly and Thompson won it in the tenth. Josh Judy picked up his 11th win to go to 11-1 and Aubrey Miller took the loss and his record fell to 3-4.
In the scheduled game, the Captains put three runs up in the first inning on RBI’s by Adam Davis, Roman Pena and Doug Pickens and the Captains led 3-0. The Shorebirds tied it up at 3-3 in top of the second on a three run home run by Henson off of Captains starter Joanniel Montero. The Shorebirds put four runs up on the board in the third inning to extend the lead to 7-3. Henson hit his second homer of the game in the seventh inning, a two run shot and it was 9-3.
Montero took the loss pitching 2.1 innings and allowing seven runs on six hits. Andrew Schindling pitched 4.2 scoreless relief innings to record his first win of the year.
The Captains and Delmarva Shorebirds wrap up the series on Saturday at 7:05 PM. The Captains will send LHP Ryan Morris (8-4, 3.50) to the mound to face the Shorebirds RHP Luis Noel (9-7, 4.10). All Captains games can be heard on AM 1330 WELW, WELW.COM or CAPTAINSBASEBALL.COM.
JAMMERS FINISH SWEEP OF SCRAPPERS 12-2
JAMESTOWN, NY- In the seasons final game in Jamestown, it was the Jammers that scored first in the first on a two run home run by Miguel Fermin. Then in the bottom of the fourth the Jammers added six more run and led it 8-0 going to the top of the fifth.
Before the fifth could begin, heavy rains started to fall and the tarp was called for and we had our second straight night of rain delays. The delay lasted just under three hours.
When we resumed the Scrappers scored their first run in the top of the fifth on a throwing error by the Jammers and after five it was 8-1 Jammers. Then in the seventh the Jammers added two runs in the bottom of the seventh on a two run home run by Justin Bass and after seven it was 10-1 Jammers.
In the bottom of the eighth the Jammers added two more runs when Jeremy Synan hit a two run home run and going to the ninth it was 12-1 Jammers. In the ninth the Scrappers starter things off with a double to center field by Cord Phelps, Jeremie Tice followed with a RBI single, then Corteze Armstrong followed with a single and the Scrappers had runners at first and second. After a fielding error Armstrong was erased at second and Zach Booker reached first. The next two Scrappers were retired and the game went to Jamestown 12-2.
In Other Games....
- Buffalo lost 7-3. LHP John Halama was thrown to the wolves to eat more innings going 7 innings while allowing 7 runs (6 earned), 11 hits, 1 walk, and had 6 strikeouts. OF Trevor Crowe had his first bad game at Buffalo going 0-for-5 with 4 strikeouts. OF Brad Snyder (1-for-4, 2 RBI) and catcher Chris Gimenez (3-for-4) continue to swing hot sticks.
- Akron lost Game 1 of their double-header 3-2. RHP Kevin Dixon was good once again going 6 innings and allowing 1 run on 3 hits, no walks and had 4 strikeouts. RHP Randy Newsom blew the save and took the loss giving up two runs in the 9th inning and unable to protect a 2-1 lead. In Game 2, things were much better for Akron as they won 8-0. RHP JD Martin (3 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 1 BB, 5 K), LHP Reid Santos (2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 2 K), LHP Tony Sipp (1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 3 K) and RHP Scott Roehl (1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 BB, 1 K) were awesome in combining for the shutout. OF Ryan Goleski was 3-for-3 with 2 HR and 3 RBI, and 2B Brandon Pinckney went 2-for-4 with a HR and 3 RBI.
- The GCL Indians were rained out.
