Kinston Sweeps Salem

The Kinston Indians completed a four game sweep of Salem with a 4-1 victory Sunday afternoon at Historic Grainger Stadium. The K-Tribe won their final 10 meetings against the Avalanche this season, winning the season series with a 16-4 record.

Kinston got all the runs they needed in the bottom of the third inning. Jared Goedert led off the inning with a single, Carlos Rivero followed with a double. Kinston newcomer Roman Pena, in just his second game with the K-Tribe, hit a three-run home run to give Kinston a 3-0 lead. Pena went 2-for-3 for Kinston. Beau Mills added a run in the bottom of the eighth inning with his Carolina League leading 81st RBI, driving in Carlos Santana. Santana was 2-for-4 for Kinston.

Indian’s starter Jeanmar Gomez (4-8) picked up the win, going seven shutout innings, striking out six and not walking a batter. K-Tribe newcomer Kyle Landis pitched a perfect inning in his first appearance for Kinston. Neil Wagner finished the game for Kinston.

The K-Tribe (64-54 overall, 29-20 in the second half) will continue their homestand Monday night against Lynchburg. Game one of the three game set starts at 7pm with Hector Rondon on the mound for the K-Tribe. Monday is buck night at the ballpark with $1 drinks, fries and hot dogs.

VALLEY CATS SQUEEK PAST SCRAPPERS 2-1

On Sunday night the Scrappers scored fist in the second inning when Donnie Webb led off with a home run. It was Webb’s first home run of the season. The score remained 1-0 Scrappers till the fifth inning when the Valley Cats plated their first two runs. It was former Ohio State Buckeye JB Shuck that hit a two run home run and it was 2-1 Tri-City after five innings. Relief pitching for both teams was solid in the middle to late innings and after eight it was still 2-1 Tri-City.

Scrapper relief pitching continued to put up zeros and the game went to the ninth still 2-1 Tri-City. In the bottom of the ninth the Scrappers put one on with one out, but then Tim Fedroff and Cord Phelps struck out to end the game.

In Other Games...

- Buffalo won 4-3 in 10 innings. LHP David Huff was great once again going 5 innings and allowing 1 run on 3 hits, 1 walk, and 6 strikeouts. In 13 starts for Buffalo, Huff has allowed 2 runs or less 10 times. OF Trevor Crowe went 0-for-4 with 3 strikeouts and is in the midst of an 1-for-13 stretch his last three games with 9 strikeouts. OF Brad Snyder went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

- Akron lost 3-2. RHP Frank Herrmann went 7.1 shutout innings and allowed 4 hits, 2 walks and had 8 strikeouts. LHP Reid Santos blew the game late giving up 3 runs in the 9th innings for the loss. Akron only had three hits, with one each from OF Jose Constanza, 1B Matt Whitney, and SS Brandon Chaves.

- Lake County and the GCL Indians were off.
