Rock Cats Toss 3-Hitter, Blank Akron 6-0
Martinez Goes 0-2 with a Walk on the Night

AKRON, OH – Yohan Pino held the Aeros to just one hit over eight innings as New Britain blanked Akron 6-0 loss on the final Fireworks Friday of the season before a sellout crowd of 9,027 fans at Canal Park. The Aeros fell to 73-54, while the Rock Cats upped their record to 52-72.

The Rock Cats jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a run in the third inning on a pair of doubles, including an RBI two-bagger by Brian Dinkelman. Akron starter Frank Herrmann held the Cats in check after that until the sixth, when David Winfree launched a two-run homer to left to give New Britain a 3-0 lead. The Rock Cats got to Aeros reliever Tony Sipp for an unearned run in the seventh, and added two more in the ninth off reliever Scott Roehl.

Pino (6-5) earned the win in his eight-inning outing, surrendering just a double to Nathan Panther in the fourth inning. He also walked three with two strikeouts. Herrmann (9-6) took the loss, though he did make his third straight quality start. The right-hander allowed three runs on four hits with one walk and one strikeout. Only Panther and Josh Rodriguez reached base multiple times, as both finished with a hit and a walk. Indians catcher Victor Martinez, rehabbing after right elbow surgery, was 0-2 with a walk and a strikeout.

The Aeros continue this three-game series Saturday at 7:05 p.m. as Akron left-hander Ryan Edell (6-6, 3.93 ERA) takes the mound against New Britain’s Jeff Manship (1-6, 5.04 ERA). The Aeros will partner with Cleveland Plus to give away drawstring backpacks to the first 1,000 fans at Canal Park. Indians second baseman Josh Barfield will also continue his rehab assignment Saturday. The game broadcast begins at 6:50 p.m. on SportsRadio 1350 AM and online at www.akronaeros.com.

Kinston Wins a Season High Eight Straight Games

The Kinston Indians won their eighth straight game, killing the Frederick Keys 14-0 Friday night in Maryland. The eighth straight victory adds to the K-Tribe’s longest win streak of the season, and their longest since 2004 when the Indians won their first ten games of the 04 campaign. Kinston has outscored opponents 68-14 during the eight game streaks.

Kinston tied a season high with 14 runs on the night, behind 13 hits. Kinston again broke out early, taking a 3-0 lead on a three-run home run by Carlos Rivero in the bottom of the first inning. Beau Mills celebrated his 22nd birthday with a solo home run in the third inning. Carlos Santana’s two-run shot, his fourth homer in just 16 games with the K-Tribe, capped off a five run fourth inning and putting Kinston up 9-0. Rivero went 3-for-5 with four RBI and two runs scored. Rivero was a single short of the cycle. Mills went 3-for-5 on the night. Lucas Montero and Santana each had two hits for Kinston.

Kinston starter Shawn Nottingham (2-3) had his best outing of the season, giving up just two hits in seven shutout innings. Nottingham struck out a season high nine batters. K-Tribe newcomer Josh Judy retired all six batters he faced, four by strikeout, to finish the game for Kinston.

The K-Tribe goes for their ninth straight win Saturday night in Frederick, Maryland. Game time at 6pm with Jeanmar Gomez on the hill. Kinston returns home to Grainger Stadium on Monday for their final homestand of the season.

CAPTAINS TOMAHAWKED BY BRAVES

(Rome, GA) – The Lake Captains had their four game winning streak snapped as the offense never got on track as the Rome Brave defeated the Captains 4-1 on Friday. The Captains are 4-1 on the current eight game road trip.

The Braves put up a run in the bottom of the first inning against Captains starter Ryan Morris when with runners at second and third, Freddie Freeman grounded out scoring C.J. Lee from third and the Braves led 1-0. The Captains tied it up in the bottom of the fifth inning when Mark Thompson got a single off of Braves starter Richard Sullivan which scored Richard Martinez to make it 1-1.

Mike Pontius came on for the Captains in the sixth inning and gave up his first run of the year when Michael Fisher doubled home Samuel Sime and the Braves led 2-1. The score went to 4-1 when Cody Johnson belted a two run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning off of Garrett Rieck.

Morris got a no decision going five innings allowing one run on four hits walking one and striking out seven. Pontius (0-1) took the loss pitching two innings and allowing the one run. Benino Puneda got the win to even his record at 4-4 and Tommy Palica notched his eighth save pitching a scoreless ninth.

The Captains and Braves play game two of the four game series on Saturday at 7:00 PM. The Captains will send LHP Ryan Miller (7-7, 3.07) to the mound against Braves RHP Erik Cordier (1-0, 3.29). BIG LATE INNNG CARRIES JAMMERS TO 11-10 WIN

The Scrappers scored early and often on Friday night as they began a three game series against the Jamestown Jammers. In the first Lonnie Chisenhall doubles in the first two runs, only to see the Jammers plate on the bottom of the first and it was 2-1 Scrappers after one.

In the second the Scrappers added two more runs, on a RBI ground out by Ryan Blair and a RBI single by Donnie Webb and after two it was 4-1 Scrappers.

In the fourth the Scrappers continued to add on to the lead. A throwing error and a wild pitch allowed the first two Scrapper runs to score, then Chisenhall added an RBI single for his third RBI of the game. After four it was 7-1 Scrappers. The Jammers added a single run in the sixth and trailed 7-2 going to the top if the eighth.

In the top of the eighth, the Jammers exploded for nine runs off of two different Scrappers relievers and took the lead for the first time 11-7 going to the bottom of the eighth.

In the bottom of the eighth Cord Phelps led off with a single his fourth hit of the game, went to third on Chisenhall’s fourth hit of the game and scored on Walter Diaz’s RBI single. Chisenhall then scored on Brock Simpson’s RBI single to right field, Michael Valadez followed with an RBI single and the Jammers lead was down to one 11-10 going to the ninth.

In the ninth, Donnie Webb led off with a walk, stole second and went to third on Phelps ground out. Chisenhall then reached on a throwing error putting runners at the corners with one out. Diaz was then called out on strikes for out number two, but the next two Scrappers went down on strikes and the Jammers took game one 11-10.

In Other Games...

- Buffalo won 14-7. LHP Aaron Laffey got the win by going 6 innings allowing 3 hits, no earned runs, 4 walks and had 5 strikeouts. OF Trevor Crowe went 2-for-5 with 2 2B and 2 RBI, 1B Michael Aubrey went 4-for-5 with 2 2B and 2 RBI, DH Jordan Brown went 2-for-4 with an RBI, C Chris Gimenez went 3-for-5 with a 2B, and OF Brad Snyder went 2-for-5 with a 2B and 3 RBI.

- The GCL Indians lost 6-5 in 11 innings. RHP Alexander Perez went 5 innings and allowed 4 hits, 2 runs, 1 walk and punched out 7 in a good outing. RHP Marty Popham followed him up with two scoreless innings of relief lowering his ERA to 0.78 on the year. The GCL team only had four hits total, with SS Matt Willard the only player of note going 1-for-4 with a 3B and 3 RBI. 3B Abner Abreu went 0-for-5.
