Rain interrupts Huff, Bisons lose

David Huff got just one out in the 2nd inning before the rains came and ended his night, before the Bisons lost 5-2 at the hands of the Indianapolis Indians.

Huff (4-4), after a scoreless first inning, loaded the bases with one out in the 2nd inning on a single, his own throwing error and a walk before the rains came and ended his night. After a 2 hour and 10 minute rain delay Brian Slocum came on in relief of Huff and served up a Grand Slam to the Indians Michel Hernandez on just the 3rd pitch he threw to put the Indians ahead for good 4-0. Huff managed just 30 pitches (19 strikes) before the rains came and ended his night with a 1.1IP, 1H, 3R, 2ER, 1BB, 2K line breaking a string of 4 starts allowing 1 run or fewer.

Slocum (3.2IP, 2ER) allowed another run in the 4th inning on a 2-out RBI single by Brian Bixler before John Meloan (2IP, 0H, 1K) and Jeff Weaver (2IP, 2H, 1K) combined to work the final 4 scoreless innings for the Herd.

The Bisons couldn't muster much on offense all night, managing only an RBI single by Chris Gimenez in the 4th inning and an RBI groundout by Trevor Crowe in the 9th. Gimenez (2-for-4) and Jordan Brown (2-for-4) the only offensive standouts for the Bisons.


Aeros rally falls short against Curve

The Akron Aeros rallied for 2 runs in the top of the 9th inning, but came up just short falling 4-3 at the hands of the Altoona Curve at Blair County Ballpark.

Akron got on the board first in the first inning as Jose Constanza walked to lead off the game and back-to-back singles by Josh Rodriguez and Bronson Sardinha made it 1-0. The Aeros were threatening to make RHP Jared Hughes (1-1) second AA start come to an early end, but Hughes bounced back and got Wes Hodges to ground into a double play before Wyatt Toregas popped out to end the frame.

The Aeros lead would be short-lived as the Curve responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the first on consecutive 1-out doubles by Shelby Ford and Jim Negrych against the Aeros Frank Herrmann. Ford would then stroke a 2-out RBI single against Herrmann (9-5) in the bottom of the 5th to put the Curve up 2-1. Herrmann finished the night with 6IP, 4H, 2ER, 3BB, 4K taking the tough luck loss.

LHP Chuck Lofgren came on in relief of Herrmann in the 7th and set down the side in order before running into some trouble in the 8th. After a lead-off single and sac bunt, Lofgren surrendered an RBI triple to Ford who later scored on a Lofgren wild pitch to give the Curve what turned into the much needed 3 run cushion of a 4-1 lead.

Akron would rally in the top of the 9th against Curve closer Ronald Belisario; 3 straight singles by Brandon Pinckney, Constanza and Rodriguez cut the deficit to 4-2 and put runners on the corners bringing Bronson Sardhina to the plate with the tying run on base and nobody out. Sardinha grounded the ball right back to the pitcher who turned the 1-6-3 double play which cut the lead to 4-3, but effectively ended the rally as Wes Hodges grounded to second to end the game.

The Aeros will play the rubber match at 7.05pm Wednesday night with Steven Wright getting the start against former Indians farm hand Dan Reichert.


K-Tribe lose late to Pelicans

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans scored two runs in the bottom of the 9th inning against K-Tribe closer Vinne Pestano to walk-off to a 4-3 win on Tuesday night.

Pestano (1-1) allowed back-to-back singles to Pelicans Jon Owings and Randy Gress to start the 9th, before Gorkys Hernandez laid down a sacrifice bunt. The bunt was fielded by 3B Jared Goedert who spun and threw to 3rd base as the K-Tribe had the wheel play on defense, but Owings slid in just ahead of the throw to load the bases with no-one out. Willie Cabrera followed with a liner to RF that fell just in front of the diving Cirilo Cumberbatch to score Owings and Gress and end the game.

The blown save robbed RHP Jeanmar Gomez of his 4th win of the season after he'd allowed just 1 run in his 6 innings of work marking the 4th straight start that he has allowed 2ER or fewer.

The Indians did all their scoring in the 3rd inning jumping out to a 3-1 lead on back-to-back-to-back 2-out RBI singles by Niuman Romero, Beau Mills and Jared Goedert.

The Indians will look to avoid the sweep at the hands of the first place Pelicans on Wednesday at 7.05pm. RHP Hector Rondon will be making the start for the K-Tribe.

- Ryan Millers winless streak continues as Captains lose 5-1 to Lexington. Miller (7-7) worked 2+ innings allowing 3ER on only 1 hit, but he walked 6 and didn't record a K. RHP Jon Holt with 3 scoreless innings in relief stretching his personal scoreless streak to 12.1IP.

- Mahoning Valley with a scheduled off day.

- GCL Indians win 3-0 over GCL Yankees. Chris Jones (3-2, 2.61ERA) brilliant again with 6 scoreless, 1-hit innings. Guido Fonseco, Denny Montero and Travis Turek completed the 1-hitter.

- DSL Indians lose 5-1 to DSL Reds. Francisco Valera (5-4) took the loss allowing 4 runs (3 earned) in 4IP.
