For all you Buffalo fans, while it has easily been a forgettable season you will get a good treat this week. DH Travis Hafner is scheduled to make two plate appearances and 2B Josh Barfield will play six innings or get three at bats (whichever comes first) on Monday night in Buffalo. Catcher Victor Martinez is scheduled to catch six innings on Tuesday night. The extent of their stay is unknown, but they should be in Buffalo until the end of the homestand.
Aeros Throttled 8-2, Swept by Rock Cats
Victor Martinez Slugs First Homer of Season
AKRON, OH – New Britain tallied four runs in the third inning, and the Aeros could not overcome the deficit as they fell 8-2 before 4,508 fans at Canal Park Sunday afternoon. The Aeros dropped to 73-56, while the Rock Cats improved to 54-72 to polish off their sweep of the Aeros. Akron finished their homestand 1-5, but with Harrisburg’s loss to Portland, Akron’s magic number to clinch a playoff spot now sits at nine.
With two down in the first inning, Tribe catcher and Aeros DH Victor Martinez pounded his first home run of the season, clearing the fence in left field to give the Aeros a 1-0 lead. Martinez would later single in the eighth inning before being replaced for a pinch-runner, finishing 2-4 with a strikeout.
The Rock Cats put up four runs in the third inning as Steve Tolleson had an RBI double and Dustin Martin followed with a two-run homer to make it 3-1. One out later Danny Valencia knocked a solo shot to right giving New Britain a 4-1 lead.
In the seventh, the Aeros put runners on second and third with one out. Armando Camacaro drove in a run on a groundout, but the Aeros could not bring in the other runner from third as Nathan Panther grounded out.
New Britain put the game away in the ninth as David Winfree clubbed a grand slam off Aeros reliever Randy Newsom to round out the scoring at 8-2.
The game was strewn with ejections from the Aeros as Stephen Head and manager Mike Sarbaugh were run by home plate umpire Jon Byrne in the seventh inning for arguing balls and strikes, and Bronson Sardinha was tossed before the start of the ninth inning by first base umpire Scott Mahoney.
Kyle Aselton (5-6) earned the win, working six innings, surrendering one run on two hits with four walks and two strikeouts. Steven Wright (3-3) worked five innings in the loss, allowing four runs on eight hits (including six for extra-bases). Frank Mata picked up his first save of the season for New Britain with 1.1 innings of perfect ball. Martinez was the only Aero with two hits, but Ryan Goleski reached base three times with a single and two walks, moving into a tie for fifth-place in Aeros history with 125 career walks.
The Aeros now hit the road for a two-city, six-game trip to Connecticut, beginning Tuesday at 6:35 p.m. against the Defenders. Akron’s Kevin Dixon (8-9, 4.34 ERA) takes the mound, while Connecticut has not announced a starter. The game broadcast begins at 6:20 p.m. on SportsRadio 1350 AM and online at www.akronaeros.com.
K-Tribe Falls to Keys
The Frederick Keys salvaged a series split with Kinston, winning the final game of the four game set 10-5 Sunday afternoon in Frederick, Maryland.
Frederick got on the board in the bottom of the second inning, racking up four hits and three runs off of K-Tribe starter Hector Rondon. Frederick added two more runs at the expense of Rondon on a two-run home run by Danny Figueroa in the bottom of the seventh inning. Rondon (11-5) took the loss, trying to become the first player in the Carolina League to win 12 games this season. Things got out of hand late, as Frederick roughed up the K-Tribe bullpen for five runs in the eighth inning.
Beau Mills was again a bright spot for the K-Tribe, hitting his Carolina League leading 20th home run of the season in the top of the fourth inning. Mills went 2-for-4 with a triple, home run, and two RBIs. Kinston added four runs in the top of the ninth inning to make the score a little tidier.
The K-Tribe returns home to Grainger Stadium for their final homestand of the season on Monday. Monday is Buck Night at the ballpark as Kinston starter Kelvin De La Cruz will square off against the Northern Division Leading Potomac Nationals. Game time 7pm at Historic Grainger Stadium.
CAPTAINS DUMP BRAVES 5-1
(Rome, GA) – Dustin Realini had four hits and drove in two runs and the Captains bullpen threw 6.2 scoreless innings to lead the Lake County Captains to a 5-1 win over the Rome Braves on Sunday. The Captains remain hot as they are 6-1 on the road trip and are winners of their last eight out of ten games.
The Braves took an early lead when David Berres bunted his way on against Captains starter Erik Berger. Berger was hurt on the play and was replaced by Jonathan Holt. Three batters later Freddie Freeman singled home Berres and it was the Braves with a 1-0 lead. The Captains tied it up at 1-1 in the top of the sixth inning when Realini doubled and then scored on Chris Nash’s single.
The Captains took the lead in the seventh inning against Braves reliever Adam Bullard when Juan Valdes plated a run with a ground out and Realini singled in another run to give the Captains a 3-1 lead. It went to 4-1 when Ron Rivas singled home Matt Brown in the eighth inning. The Captains got a RBI double from Realini in the ninth inning to up the lead to 5-1.
Berger got a no decision going 2.1 innings in his Captains debut allowing one run on three hits, while striking out two. Holt improved his record to 3-6 pitching 3.2 scoreless innings allowing three hits and striking out two. Dallas Cawiezell came on in the seventh inning and threw two scoreless innings. John Gaub pitched a scoreless ninth inning. Bullard took the loss in his Braves debut.
The Captains and Braves wrap up the series on Monday at 7:00 PM with the Captains sending RHP Joey Mahalic (7-4, 3.48) to the mound to face the Braves RHP Edgar Osuna (8-4, 3.27). All Captains games can be heard on AM 1330 WELW, WELW.COM or CAPTAINSBASEBALL.COM.
SCRAPPERS GO INTO THE ALL STAR BREAK WITH A 6-4 WIN OVER JAMESTOWN
On Sunday night in front of 5,087 fans the Scrappers got off to a slow start., but it wouldn’t last long. The Jammers scored first in the first on a solo home run from Miguel Fermin, then added their second run in the top of the third on another solo home run by Ben Lasater and going to the bottom of the third it was 2-0 Jammers.
The Scrappers then exploded for five run in the bottom of the third, Jeremie Tice doubled in two runs and then Zach Booker tripled in three runs with a shot off of the center field wall and the Scrappers took the lead 5-2.
In the sixth the Scrappers added another run on a RBI single by Lonnie Chisehnall and the lead was now 6-2 Scrappers. The Jammers started to work away at the Scrappers lead scoring two runs in the top of the seventh on a two RBI single by Fermin and after eight it was 6-4 Scrappers.
In the bottom of the ninth Daniel Morales came in to close out the game. Morales gave up a lead off single but then started a double play to clear the bases, then he recorded the final out on a ground out and the Scrappers took game three 6-4 and the three game series two games to one.

- Buffalo lost 8-3. RHP Brian Bullington went 5 innings and allowed 10 hits, 5 earned runs, 3 walks, and had 6 strikeouts. OF Brad Snyder went 1-for-3 with a HR and an RBI, and OF Trevor Crowe went 1-for-3 with a 2B and walk.

Any insights on Wright?
His HR/IP ratio at Akron is downright awful, yet he did well earlier this year.
As a former high pick with a big bonus, and based on his age and performance, shouldn't the Indians just stick him in the pen and see if he can be a plus reliever?
Do you understand why they leave him in the rotation?
My insight on Wright is I still don't believe he is much of a prospect at least as a starter. I do think you'll finally see them convert him to the bullpen this offseason, where he may have to me he would be a much better prospect because of the above average fastball and wicked slider mix.
I do know they often keep guys in the rotation even if they will only be a reliever because there are so many things they can't expose a guy to for only one inning an outing versis 4-5 innings. Lots of game situations and scenarios as well as using a 3rd pitch is better suited pitching 4-5 innings every five days.
