Daily Recap: 8/6

CAPTAINS WIN BY A HEHR

(Eastlake, OH) – Jeff Hehr hit a bases loaded three RBI double in the bottom of the eighth inning to lead the Lake County Captains to a 6-2 win over the Delmarva Shorebirds on Wednesday. Ron Rivas tripled in Hehr to help secure the win. Captains pitching struck out fourteen batters in the game.

The scoring started early when the Shorebirds Joe Nowicki homered off of Captains starter Joey Mahalic in the top of the first inning to give the Shorebirds a 1-0 lead. The Captains got to Shorebirds starter Chris Salberg when they took the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. Dustin Realini doubled home Karexon Sanchez and Adam White doubled home Matt Brown to make it 2-1.

The Shorebirds tied it up in the top of the seventh inning when they put two runners on base against John Gaub. Gary Campfield came on in relief of Gaub and Ryan Adams singled home a run to make it 2-2.

Mahalic got no decision despite going five innings and allowing only one run on four hits, walking one and striking out six. John Gaub came on in the sixth inning and pitched 1.2 innings giving up one run while striking out five. Campfield threw 1.1 scoreless innings to pick up the win and raise his record to 6-3. Kyle Landis pitched a scoreless ninth inning. Brian Parker gave up the runs in the eighth inning and took the loss to drop his record to 6-5.

The Captains and Delmarva Shorebirds play game two of the series on Thursday with game time at 7:05 PM. The Captains will send RHP Chris Archer (3-8, 4.23) to the mound to face the Shorebirds LHP Zach Britton (10-5, 2.77). JAMMERS RALLEY AND TAKE GAME ONE 5-3

JAMESTOWN, NY- On Wednesday night the Scrappers scored first in the first when after two straight walks Lonnie Chisenhall followed with an RBI single and it was 1-0 Scrappers after one. The Scrappers plated two more run in the second again keyed by Lonnie Chisenhalls 2 RBI double and after two it was 3-0 Scrappers.

The game remained 3-0 Scrappers after five. Starter Eric Berger worked the first five innings surrendered only one hit, while walking one and striking out seven.

The Jammers scored their first run in the sixth when Kevin Mattison tripled and scored on a wild pitch. Jamestown then added four more runs in the bottom of the seventh and took the lead for the first time 5-3.

In the ninth the Scrappers, put two on with one out, but could not score and dropped game one 5-3.


In Other Games...

- Buffalo lost 3-2. RHP Brian Bullington had an outstanding start going seven innings and did not allow an earned run on five hits, no walks, and two strikeouts. OF Brad Snyder went 1-for-3 with a HR and RBI, and newly acquired 2B Andy Cannizaro went 1-for-4 with a HR and RBI.

- Akron won 6-3. RHP Steven Wright put forth a good effort going seven innings and allowed three runs on five hits, two walks, and had three strikeouts. RHP Randy Newsom notched his 26th save at Akron pitching a scoreless ninth inning. OF Jose Constanza was 1-for-4 with a 2B and 3 RBI, and OF Nathan Panther (2-for-3) and 3B Brandon Pinckney (2-for-4).

- Kinston lost 9-6. RHP Hector Rondon was okay going five innings and allowing three runs on six hits, no walks and four strikeouts. Stud catching prospect Carlos Santana was back in the lineup after a well deserved day off and went 2-for-5 with a 2B, HR and 2 RBI. SS Carlos Rivero connected for his 4th homer of the season and went 2-for-4 at the plate.

- The GCL Indians lost 7-3. RHP Danny Salazar put up another good start going five innings and allowing one run on four hits, three walks and four strikeouts. OF Bo Greenwell paced the offense going 2-for-4 and 3B Abner Abreu was 0-for-4 with an RBI.
