Edell pitches Aeros past Senators

LHP Ryan Edell worked 7 brilliant innings and 3B Wes Hodges had a pair of sacrifice flies leading the Akron Aeros to a 4-1 victory over the Harrisburg Senators in front of 5,522 fans at Canal Park on Saturday night.

Edell (6-6) was brilliant through 7 innings allowing only 1 run off 3 hits walking 2 and striking out 2 with the only damage coming on a 2-out solo HR by Senators 2B Seth Bynam in the 3rd inning. The outing marked the 8th straight excellent start by Edell who has gone 3-1 with a 2.02ERA (49IP, 38H, 11ER, 6BB, 36K) over that stretch.

The Aeros got on the board in the 1st inning without the benefit of a hit; Jose Constanza was hit by a pitch to lead off the game and stole 2nd base with Josh Rodriguez at the plate. After Rodriguez walked, Constanza would swipe 3rd for his second steal of the inning (18th of season). Wes Hodges then brought Constanza home with a sacrifice fly to right field against Senators starter Justin Jones (2-3).

After Bynam's home run had tied the game, the Aeros took the lead for good in the bottom of the 3rd inning. SS Brandon Pinckney lead off the inning with a walk and was moved to 2nd on a sac bunt by Constanza. After Josh Rodriguez singled to put runners on the corners, Wes Hodges lifted his second sacrifice fly of the game for a 2-1 lead and his 82RBI of the season (2nd in EL).

The Aeros would put the game out of reach in the bottom of the 8th inning mounting a 2-out rally; Stephen Head doubled with 2 down and the Senators elected to intentionally walk hot-hitting DH Wyatt Toregas. This plan back-fired as Ryan Goleski was unintentionally walked to load the bases and back-up catcher Damaso Espino stroked a 2-run single off Harrisburg reliever Andrew Kohn for a 4-1 advantage.

RHP Scott Roehl and LHP Reid Santos combined to work a scoreless 8th inning before RHP Randy Newsom spun a shut-out 9th inning working around a leadoff single and a 2-out HBP to record his 25th AA save of the season.

Akron, who's lead in the Southern Division remained at 2.5 games after Bowie defeated Altoona, will finish up their 3-game series with the Senators at 2.05pm Sunday.


De La Cruz bounces back, K-Tribe win 3rd straight

After not making it out of the first inning in his last start, Kelvin De La Cruz responed with 5 strong innings and the Indians bullpen held on for a 6-4 K-Tribe win over the Salem Avalanche on Saturday night.

De La Cruz (2-1) allowed only 1-run and struck out 6 avalanche hitters in his 5 innings of work to pick up the win and improve the Indians 2nd half record to 24-17 - 3.5 games behind the Myrtle Beach Pelicans for the 2nd half division lead.

The Indians took the lead for good in the 3rd inning on a 2-out RBI single by SS Carlos Rivero scoring Lucas Montero who had lead off with a double before breaking the game wide open in the 4th inning, batting around and scoring 4-runs against Avalanche starter Sergio Severino (0-4). Matt McBride and Cirilo Cumberbatch started the inning with back-to-back singles before Montero and Carlos Santana stroked consecutive RBI singles with 1-out in the inning. Beau Mills was HBP to load the bases before Niuman Romero lofted a sacrifice fly to center and RIvero followed with a 2-out RBI single to put the K-Tribe ahead 5-0. The Indians would finish their scoring in the 5th inning as Montero reached on an error by Senators SS Roberto Mean scoring Matt McBride from 3rd base to put Kinston into a 6-1 lead.

The Senators would rally against Kinston reliever Sung-Wei Tseng; a 2-out rally in the 6th was capped by an RBI single by Senators 3B Jhon Florentino to cut the defecit to 6-2, before back-to-back sacrifice flies in the 7th inning by 2B Greg Buchanan and CF Nicholas Moresi brought Harrisburg back to 6-4.

RHP Josh Tomlin struck out a pair over a scoreless 8th inning and Vinnie Pestano recorded his 6th save in as many opportunities with a scoreless 9th to preserve the lead.

Lucas Montero (2-for-6, 2B, 2RBI), Carlos Santana (2-for-5, RBI), Carlos Rivero (3-for-4, 2RBI), Matt McBride (2-for-4) and Cirilo Cumerbatch (3-for-5) all with big nights on offense for a K-Tribe team that will look to complete a 4 game sweep Sunday night at 6.07pm. Carlton Smith is scheduled to take the mound.


Captains offensive explosion sees off Legends

The Lake County Captains have struggled to score runs all season long, but not on Saturday night. The Captains banged out 15 hits on their way to a 12-3 demolition of the Lexington Legends.

The Captains scored in each of the first 3 innings before putting 6 runs on the board in 5th inning. 2B Karexon Sanchez finished the night 3-for-5 with a double, HR(9) and 2RBI. DH Chris Nash (3-for-5) and 3B Jeff Hehr (3-for-4) also had big nights at the plate and 1B Todd Martin (1-for-3, HR, 2RBI) launched a first inning HR to put the Captains ahead for good with his 2nd HR in as many games and his 3rd in 4 games since being assigned to Lake County after injury.

The offensive outburst made a winner of RHP Chris Archer (3-8). Archer allowed 3 runs off 3 hits in 5 innings of work, he walked 4 and struck out 6. RHP John Holt (2IP, 2H, 2K) and RHP John Gaub (2IP, 2H, 3K) combined to work the final 4 scoreless innings to close out the win.


In other games...

- Bisons lose 5-3 to Chiefs. Bisons were out-hit 14-2. LHP John Halama started and allowed 3 runs (2 earned) in 6IP. RHP John Meloan (0-1) took the loss allowing 2 runs (1 earned) in 2.2IP. Jordan Brown (1-for-3, 2RBI) the only offensive standout.

- Scrappers lose 7-5 to Jammers. Matt Langwell (1-2) allowed 6 runs (5 earned) in 4IP to take the loss. SS Lonnie Chisenhall (2-for-3, 2 2B, 2RBI) and 3B Jeremie Tice (1-for-3, 2RBI) the top performers on offense.

- GCL Indians lose 6-5 to Blue Jays. LHP Clayton Cook (0-1) allowed 4ER in 2 innings to take the loss. Abner Abreu (3-for-5) and Angel Rodriguez (4-for-4) with great performances with the bat.

- DSL Indians lose 2-1 to Diamondbacks/Reds. 19-year old LHP Francisco Jimenez (2-1) with the tough luck loss allowing 1 run in 6IP with 7K for an Indians team that was 3-hit.
