Game Recaps: Tuesday 4/14

Indianapolis Sinks Clippers 13-6

Hide the women and children as it was not a pretty night last night for the Clippers as Columbus pitching allowed 13 runs (12 earned), 17 hits, 3 walks and 1 home run in what was a 13-6 loss. Starter Jack Cassel was feasted on by Indianapolis to the tune of 7 runs, 9 hits, 2 walks, and just 1 strikeout in 3.1 innings. Things did not get any better for lefty Ryan Edell as he allowed 6 runs, 8 hits, no walks, and had 3 strikeouts in 2.1 innings of relief.

The one bright spot on the pitching front was John Meloan going 2 scoreless-hitless innings of relief allowing 1 walk and striking out 3 batters. In two appearances on the young season, Meloan has now thrown 5 shutout innings allowing 1 hit, 1 walk, and has 7 strikeouts.

Once again the offense performed well with 6 runs on 14 hits. First baseman Michael Aubrey continues to be red hot to start the season going 4-for-5 with 2 2B and 2 RBI. Other standout performers were third baseman Wes Hodges (3-for-5, 2 2B, RBI) and outfielder Matt LaPorta (2-for-4, 2B, RBI). Outfielder Steven Head also hit his first home run of the season, a solo shot in the 8th inning.

Aeros and Curve Rained Out Tuesday

AKRON, OH – Tuesday’s Eastern League contest between the Aeros and the Altoona Curve was rained out, and the teams will make up the game as part of a doubleheader on Friday, April 24th starting at 6:05 p.m. Fans with tickets to Tuesday’s game may exchange them for any remaining 2009 regular-season home game, subject to availability. The exchanges must be made at either the Aeros Box Office or at Infield Outfitters, the official team store of the Aeros located at Canal Park.

The finale of this abbreviated series is set for 10:35 a.m. Wednesday on the first Aeros Education Day of 2009. The scheduled starters will remain in place, with Akron’s Hector Rondon (1-0, 1.59 ERA) taking on Curve southpaw Tony Watson (0-0, 12.27 ERA).

Kinston Beats Wilmington 1-0 in Rain shortened game

The K-Tribe beat Wilmington 1-0 in a rain shortened game called in the top of the seventh inning Tuesday night at Historic Grainger Stadium

The Indians (3-3) got another great performance from Kelvin De La Cruz (2-0) who did not give up a run, striking out nine through six strong innings. De La Cruz gave up only four hits while not walking a batter. He leads the Carolina League with 19 strikeouts this season.

The K-Tribe got the only run they needed in the bottom of the first inning, when Matt McBride bounced a ball to Wilmington’s shortstop and avoided a potential inning ending double play by beating the relay throw to first base. Cord Phelps scored on the play and the run held up for the K-Tribe.

The Indians return to action Wednesday night as their 11 game season opening homestand rolls on. Game time 7pm and Jeanmar Gomez will take the hill for the K-Tribe.

BLUECLAWS WIN RAIN SHORTENED GAME

(Eastlake, OH) – It was a rainy night at Classic Park as the Lakewood BlueClaws defeated the Captains 10-3 in a game shortened by rain in the 7th inning. The Captains record falls to 1-5 having lost five in a row and they have given up nine or more runs in each of the last three games.

The Captains struck with a run in the bottom of the first inning against BlueClaws starter when Jeremie Tice grounded a ball through the legs of third baseman Travis Mattair bringing Mark Thompson to the plate and it was 1-0. The Claws rallied back with four runs in the third off of Captains starter Joey Mahalic on RBI’s from Travis D’Arnaud, Harold Garcia, Sebastian Valle and a Mahalic wild pitch.

The BlueClaws pushed two more runs across in the fourth inning on a two run single by Mattair and then scored three more in the fifth on a two run triple by Zach Collier and a sacrifice fly from Leandro Castro and it was 9-1.

The Captains got two runs to cut the lead to 9-3 in the fifth inning on a RBI triple by Adam White and a single by Donnie Webb. The BlueClaws tacked on run in the 7th before the tarp was placed on the field.

Mahalic took the loss going three innings and allowing four runs on four hits. Russell Young threw three innings and allowed five runs. Tyler Cloyd picked up the win for Lakewood to even his record at 1-1.

The final game of the series is Wednesday as the Captains will send LHP T.J. House (0-0, 0.00) to the mound against RHP Jason Knapp (0-1, 3.18).
