While Rondon apparently had dominating stuff, he gave up 2 runs on only 4 hits. That suggests that the problems he was having last year with runners on base has carried over to this year.

Any insight on that aspect of his game? I can't see him being promoted to Cleveland if he has that kind of "hole" in his pitching.

I'm not sure I understand this observation. I checked Rondon's splits last year with bases empty, runner's on, and RISP....and there was nothing that stuck out. His numbers were very similar with bases empty as compared to with runners on. And, for comp sake I looked at Huff's splits and Rondon's were better in this regard. Can you elaborate where Rondon struggled with runner's on, because the stats don't show that:

Rondon:
Bases empty: .234 AVG, .661 OPS
Runners on: .245 AVG, .690 OPS
RISP: .260 AVG, .733 OPS

Huff (@ Buf):
Bases empty: .216 AVG, .569 OPS
Runners on: .239 AVG, .699 OPS
RISP: .265 AVG, .790 OPS

Tony,

I never saw his splits personally. I read a chat with Jim Callis IIRC a couple of months ago and he was posed a question about Rondon's splits. I think there was about .100 difference, and he said that while it was somewhat troubling, Rondon had time to correct it. I only posed the question because of his name being raised as a mid-season promotion.

With you having checked his splits, I don't know what to think other than my recollection was wrong. I know the chat occurred, and I thought it was about Rondon, but maybe it was regarding another pitcher.

I appreciate you checking. I'm going to have to do some research on my end to see what I can find. Thanks.

Tony,

I found the info. regarding Rondon's splits. Thought I was becoming delusional.

It was from a Jim Callis chat, and is as follows:

"One area Rondon will need to improve upon is his ability to keep runners from scoring when they get on.:

With the bases empty: 0.88 ERA, 82.0 IP/76 H/8 R/8 ER/8 HR/25 BB/85 K, 1.01 GO/AO, .234 BAA.

With runners on: 7.14 ERA, 63.0 IP/54 H/55 R/50 ER/4 HR/17 BB/60 K, 0.66 GO/AO, .245 BAA.

Scoring Position: 11.68 ERA, 34.2 IP/33 H/50 R/45 ER/3 HR/13 BB/38 K, 0.71 GO/AO, .260 BAA."

Unless I'm misinterpreting the data, or Callis' numbers are wrong, it would seem Rondon's performance is significantly different when he pitches out of the stretch, at least his ERA. But, his BAA splits, as you pointed out, are not that different. The numbers seem rather strange.

Let me know what insight you might have.

Thanks.

Tony,

Don't know how to edit comments, if that feature is available.

As you might have noticed, the chat was with John Sickels, not Jim Callis.

I'm not sure I still understand. His BAs, OPS and everything else have remained pretty consistent in all situations, which implies he is not giving up any more hits or anything with runners on. Obviously, if a guy hits .260 with no one on the ERA is very low....they hit .260 with a guy or two on the ERA is gonna be high.

I mean, ERA should increase as guys pitch with runners on. I mean, look at one of the best in the game last year in Sabathia:

No one on: 0.88 ERA
Runners on: 5.09 ERA
RISP: 7.22 ERA
RISP w/2 outs: 15.38 ERA

It is something to follow, but I think looking at ERA in those situations is not the right way to go about it since it will be heavily inflated because it only takes a couple hits in those situations to jack it up.
