Goodyear Notebook: 4/4

A very short notebook today just to post the rosters. I will be back with a big final notebook tomorrow to wrap up camp and my trip out here.

Official Lake County & Kinston Rosters

Okay, official rosters for Single-A Lake County and advanced Single-A Kinston have been released. One small correction from yesterday is I incorrectly had Kyle Landis in Kinston and Danny Salazar in Lake County, when Landis will actually be in Lake County and Salazar will open in extended spring training.

Lake County:

Rotation: T.J. House (LHP), Alexander Perez (RHP), T.J. McFarland (LHP), Joey Mahalic (RHP), Ryan Miller (LHP)

Bullpen: Santo Frias (RHP), Matt Langwell (RHP), Russell Young (LHP), Steve Smith (RHP), Michael McGuire (RHP), Dave Roberts (RHP), Paolo Espino (RHP), Kyle Landis (RHP)

Position: Michael Valadez (C), Adam Abraham (C), Mark Thompson (SS), Jeremie Tice (3B), Walter Diaz (INF), Nate Recknagel (C/1B), Karexon Sanchez (2B), Chris Nash (1B), Adam White (OF), Donnie Webb (OF), Abner Abreu (OF), Ryan Blair (OF)

Kinston:

Rotation: Jeanmar Gomez (RHP), Ryan Morris (LHP), Eric Berger (LHP), Zach Putnam (RHP), Kelvin De La Cruz (LHP)

Bullpen: Josh Judy (RHP), Matt Meyer (LHP), Chen-Chang Lee (RHP), Gary Campfield (RHP), Dallas Cawiezell (RHP), Heath Taylor (LHP), Jonathan Holt (RHP)

Position: Alex Castillo (C), Richard Martinez (C), Cristo Arnal (INF), Lonnie Chisenhall (3B), Adam Davis (INF/C), Cord Phelps (2B), Matt McBride (1B), Ronald Rivas (SS), Matt Brown (OF), Jason Denham (OF), Tim Fedroff (OF), Lucas Montero (OF), Roman Pena (OF)

Projected Akron & Columbus Rosters

Okay, while the Lake County and Kinston rosters are official, the Akron and Buffalo rosters are not official yet. The only thing official is the pitching staff at Akron, and the starting rotation at Columbus.

The reason the rosters are not official yet is because of a few players still with the Indians who may factor into the Columbus roster such as Wilson Valdez, Matt Herges, Andy Marte, Damaso Espino, and Tony Graffanino, so the final roster for Columbus (and even Akron) is subject to change. Akron could be affected by a trickle down effect with their bench, plus infielder Josh Rodriguez is banged up and still recovering from an intercostal strain which has sidelined him for about ten days of camp. He is supposed to be okay, but may open in extended spring training for a few days to be sure he is 100%.

All that said, the Akron roster should be pretty much what it is as well as the Columbus roster. The only changes would be to a bullpen guy or two in Columbus and some of the bench guys at both affiliates.

Akron:

Rotation: Chuck Lofgren (LHP), Frank Herrmann (RHP), Josh Tomlin (RHP), Hector Rondon (RHP), Steven Wright (RHP)

Bullpen: Erik Stiller (RHP), Randy Newsom (RHP), Scott Roehl (RHP), Neil Wagner (RHP), Carlton Smith (RHP), Michael Finocchi (RHP), Ryan Edell (LHP), Vinnie Pestano (RHP)

Position: Carlos Santana (C), Armando Camacaro (C), Beau Mills (1B), Jared Goedert (3B), Jerad Head (INF/OF), Carlos Rivero (SS), Niuman Romero (INF), Josh Rodriguez (2B), John Drennen (OF), Nick Weglarz (OF), Jose Constanza (OF), Michael Hall (OF)

Columbus:

Rotation: David Huff (LHP), Jeremy Sowers (LHP), Aaron Laffey (LHP), Kirk Saarloos (RHP), Jack Cassel (RHP)

Bullpen: John Meloan (RHP), Tony Sipp (LHP), Rich Rundles (LHP), Vinnie Chulk (RHP), Juan Salas (RHP), Greg Aquino (RHP), Jose Rodriguez (RHP)

Position: Chris Gimenez (C/1B), Wyatt Toregas (C), Jordan Brown (1B), Michael Aubrey (1B), Andy Cannizaro (SS), Wes Hodges (3B), Juan Merchan (INF), Luis Valbuena (2B), Michael Brantley (OF), Stephen Head (OF), Matt LaPorta (OF), George Lombard (OF)

I don't get it. Mark Thompson plays his ass off all spring, hits in damn near every game, even homers a couple of days ago, and has to repeat Lake County while they promote RON FRIKIN' RIVAS.

Somebody explain THAT one to me.

Yeah, the only surprise really was the Rivas/Thompson switch. I know that last year the Indians were high on Rivas, so apparently that has not changed, though I still don't see it with him.

Hey Tony,
I think the Indians have done a solid job of appropriately populating its organization. We could probably quibble and say that Herrmann should be starting in Columbus instead of a vet but he is a borderline prospect IMO. That would have opened a spot for Gomez in Akron which would be more important to me. However, I suspect that he and De La will be there by midseason.

For all the talk about vets taking relief spots in Columbus from prospects, I just don't see it. Edell is probably the most advanced reliever prospect in Akron and he can be moved once he settles in to his new role.

There are some players in extended ST that will probably change rosters more quickly than any placement mistakes. If he doesn't go to Cleveland, Rondon may be the first move off the Akron staff to Buffalo even though there is not need to rush him. Try as I might, I cannot see any material mistakes. Probably old age, huh?

Other then trying to send Rondon to play for the Mets in Buffalo, no major flaws in your post.

ha ha ha.

Why are there eight bullpen spots in Akron? I assume that's a glitch.

Tony,

First off, thanks for all the updates/info/pictures etc... great stuff!

Second, it seems like the trend is to use both AAA/AA to stage prospects who might come up in the near future, as opposed to the older school approach of AA first, THEN AAA, THEN majors, especially with bullpen guys. Do you agree?

The talent at the upper levels is really pretty impressive. Excited for the season to start- good time to be an Indians fan I think- as opposed to the 70's and 80's when I first started following the Tribe.

Tony,

Could you make a list of the players not on full season teams and left at EST? That would help me see who is still left to fight for spots on one of the short season teams.

No, according to what I was told, 8 guys will open in Akron bullpen. This of course can change as no official roster has been released yet.

Tom, yeah, I have been saying for awhile now that the Indians view Triple-A as more of a holding ground and Double-A is the finishing school. They don't put nearly as much importance on a guy getting a set amount of innings or at bats in Triple-A as they do for Double-A.

Jason, I will try and work on that list tonight or tomorrow. Won't be all inclusive (no such list is provided), but I have a working roster I can pull from that should get me to about 95%+ correct.
