Game Recaps: Monday 7/13

Columbus is off for the All Star break and Mahoning Valley had a scheduled off day.

Aeros Falter Again, Lose 7-5

The Erie SeaWolves took three of four games from the Aeros in the final series before the All-Star Break. Monday’s 7-5 loss was a season-high 5th straight loss for Akron. The Aeros head to the break with a 56-35 record.

The Aeros got right to work and put two runs on the board in the 1st. Consecutive walks by Jose Constanza and John Drennen started the game. Constanza would score on Matt McBride’s double, and McBride would score thanks to an Armando Camacaro single.

Erie got a run back in the third, then took a 6-2 lead with a five-run 5th inning, highlighted by a Jeff Kunkel two run homer.

A pair of sacrifice flies by Matt McBride and Beau Mills in the 7th pulled the Aeros to within 6-4, but Erie got a run back in their half of the 7th. McBride’s 7th homer of the season got the difference back to 7-5, but Cody Satterwhite closed it out for his 10th save of the season.

The Aeros are now off until Thursday, though five Aeros will head to Trenton for tomorrow’s All-Star Game. Play resumes Thursday night at 7:05 at Canal Park.

Chisenhall, Phelps Homer As Kinston Wins in Extras

Ronald Rivas hit an RBI double in the top of the tenth inning and the K-Tribe hit the long ball early, as Kinston beat Frederick 4-3 Monday night in Maryland.

Kinston trailed 1-0 going into the top of the fourth inning, when Cord Phelps hit a solo home run to even the score. It was Phelps second home run of the season. Phelps had a great night, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a walk. Lonnie Chisenhall gave Kinston a 3-1 advantage with a two-run home run in the top of the seventh inning. It was Chisenhall’s first home run of the second half and 14th homer of the season, now the third most in the Carolina League. The bomb also extended Chisenhall’s hit streak to a season high 13 games as he went 1-for-4 on the night.

Frederick evened the score in the eighth inning as Kraig Binick hit a two-out, two RBI single off of Kinston reliever Kyle Landis. In the top of the tenth inning, Ole Sheldon led off the frame with a single. After a Roman Pena grounder advanced Sheldon to second, Eric Perlozzo came in to pinch run. One batter later, Ronald Rivas hit an RBI double to the gap, giving Kinston the lead for good.

Kinston starter Russell Young had a solid outing, giving up just one run in 6 2/3 innings. He struck out three and did not walk a batter. Landis (1-4) got the win in relief. Paolo Espino, in his first relief appearance of the year for Kinston, picked up his first save of the season. Espino gave up just one hit in the tenth inning.

The K-Tribe, winners of three of their last four, will square off against Frederick in game two of the series on Tuesday night. Game time 7pm from Maryland as Eric Berger takes the hill for Kinston.

Captains Blanked 1-0

The first game of the eight game series was quite a pitchers duel but the Lake County Captains came up short falling to the Asheville Tourists 1-0 on Monday. The Captains have been shut out six times this year.

The Tourists scored the only run of the game in the top of the seventh inning when Scott Robinson singled and stole second. Jordan Pacheco singled to right field scoring Robinson and the Tourists lead 1-0.

Captains’ starter Danny Salazar (2-3) got no decision going five scoreless innings and allowing six hits, walking two and striking out six. Matt Langwell (0-4) followed Salazar in the sixth inning and allowed one run in three innings of work and took the loss. Tourists’ starter Parker Frazier (6-6) got the win pitching eight scoreless innings allowing only two hits while striking out two. Adam Jorgenson pitched the ninth inning to get his eighteenth save of the year.

The Captains and Tourists play game two of the series on Tuesday at 7:00 PM with the Captains sending LHP Chris Jones (3-1, 5.55) to the mound to face the Tourists RHP Juan Nicasio (3-1, 1.91).
