Game Recaps: Wednesday 7/22

Columbus and Lake County were postponed due to rain, while Akron's game was suspended due to rain.

K-Tribe snap 4-game skid

After Winston-Salem scored an unearned run in the top of the first inning, Kinston came back with an RBI ground out from Lonnie Chisenhall (0-for-4) in the bottom of the frame. The RBI drove in Lucas Montero who singled to lead off the inning.

The K-Tribe would break the tie in the bottom of the third, when Adam Davis delivered a bases loaded, two-out, two RBI single. Kinston loaded the bases earlier in the inning with back-to-back singles from Ryan Blair and Montero and Ole Sheldon getting hit by a pitch. Kinston would add some insurance in the fifth inning, when Cord Phelps and Ole Sheldon walked. The duo was driven in with back-to-back RBI singles from Davis and Ronald Rivas. Davis ended the night 2-for-4 with three RBI.

Paolo Espino (3-5) picked up the win for Kinston giving up just three hits and an unearned run in six innings. Espino struck out six and did not walk a batter. David Roberts picked up his third save of the season, striking out three in two innings of work. Dash starter Justin Edwards (2-2) took the loss. Former ECU Pirate Dale Mollenhauer went 1-for-5 with a double on the night.

Brach Pitches Scrappers to 10-0 Win

On Wednesday night the Scrappers used strong starting pitching from Brett Brach and clutch hitting to defeat the Aberdeen Ironbirds 10-0. The Scrappers were able to get off to an early lead scoring three runs in the first, thanks to an Ironbirds error and a Kyle Bellows RBI single. Then in the third, the Scrappers expanded the lead when Bellows tripled to right center and the scored on Ben Carlson’s RBI Single.

Mahoning Valley added two more runs in the fifth when Chun Chen doubled and scored on Kyle Bellows RBI single. Greg Folgia then followed with an RBI double and the Scrappers lead was now 6-0. Scrapper pitching was also cruising as Brett Brach worked the first five innings, limiting the Ironbirds to just three base hits and no runs. In the ninth, the Scrappers added four runs all with two outs in route to the 10-0 victory over the Ironbirds. The Scrappers are in Sate College on Thursday to take on the Spikes, game time is 7:05 PM.
