Game Recaps: Wednesday 7/15

Keys only allow four hits in win over K-Tribe
Frederick LHP Rick Zagone and RHP Eddie Gamboa combined to set the side down in order in every inning except the fifth and the ninth, as the Keys defeated the Kinston Indians Wednesday night, 5-1.

After tossing four perfect innings, the K-Tribe got to Zagone in the fifth. Kinston 1B Ole Sheldon drilled a solo homer to dead center, giving Kinston the early 1-0 lead.

That's the only run the southpaw would allow. Zagone went seven innings, surrendering just the one run on three hits, while striking out six.

The Keys tied the game up in the bottom half of the sixth inning. 3B Tyler Henson led things off with a single. DH Wally Crancer followed that up with a double to right field. With runners on second and third, LF David Cash grounded a ball to shortstop. Henson broke for home. Indians' SS Ronald Rivas' throw home wasn't in time, tying the game at one.

Frederick took the lead for good in the eighth. Henson led the inning off with a double to left. Crancer laid down a sac bunt. Brandon Waring then came into the game to pinch hit for Cash. With the infield in, Waring grounded a ball up the middle and into center for a hit. Henson scored, giving the Keys the lead.

They weren't done. Frederick ended up loading the bases for C Caleb Joseph. The Keys' backstop came through with a base-clearing triple, making the score 5-1.

Gamboa ended up getting the win for Keys. He pitched two shut out innings for his first Carolina League victory. RHP David Roberts took the loss for Kinston. He's now 0-2.

Tourists topple Captains
Kiel Roling drove in four runs and the Asheville Tourists stayed hot, defeating the Lake County Captains for the third straight night, 11-3 on Wednesday. The Captains have lost a season high six games.

For the second night in a row the Tourists put up a run in the top of the first inning when Scott Robinson led off the inning with a double. A sacrifice bunt moved him to third and he scored on a ground out by Jordan Pacheco and it was 1-0. The Captains came right back in the bottom of the inning when Nate Recknagel doubled and Donnie Webb score. John Allman followed with a double that score Recknagel and the Captains led 2-1.

The Tourists took the lead back in the top of the third inning when they scored three times on a two RBI single by Pacheco and a RBI double by Kiel Roling and it was 4-2. The Captains got a run in the bottom of the sixth inning when Webb scored on a fielder's choice off the bat of Mark Thompson and it was 4-3. The Tourists got the run back in the top of the seventh inning when Carlos Martinez scored on a wild pitch from Captains reliever Travis Turek to make it 5-3. It went to 6-3 in the top of the eighth inning on a solo home run by Roling. The Tourists tacked on five more runs in the top of the ninth inning against Ryan Miller when Robinson singled in a run, Roling singled home two more runs and Michael Zuanich hit a two run home run.

Captains' starter Chris Jones (3-2) took the loss going six innings and allowing four runs, one earned on six hits, walking one and striking out seven. Tourists' starter Dan Houston (5-6) got the win pitching 5.2 innings and allowing three runs on eight hits while striking out eight.

Yankees pound Scrappers
On Wednesday night the Staten Island Yankee pitching was able to limit the Scrappers to just one run, taking the second straight game in the three game series 9-1.

Again the Yankees were the first to score and they tallied a single run in the top of the third off of starter Kyle C. Smith. Staten Island added two more runs off of Smith in the fourth when Yankee right fielder DeAngelo Mack hit his first home run of the season, making the score 4-0 Yankees.

The Scrappers manufactured there first run in the sixth when Jordan Henry and Kyle Smith both reached on throwing errors and them each moved up a base on the double steal. Catcher Chun Chen then grounded out driving home a Scrapper run.

In the top of the seventh, the Yankees sent eleven men to the plate scoring six runs in the inning. The Yankees hit two home runs in the inning a solo home run from Ryan Baker and a grand slam from Neil Medchil, making the score 9-1 Yankees after seven innings.

The game remained unchanged moving to the bottom of the ninth, when Ben Carlson and Greg Folgia started off the inning with back to back singles. Carlson was then wild pitched to third and Folgia took second base. The next three Scrappers went down swinging and the Yankees took game two from the Scrappers 9-1.
