Game Recaps: Tuesday 7/14

Columbus and Akron were off for the All Star break.

Chisenhall Homers, Kinston Falls 7-5

Lonnie Chisenhall provided the early pop in the top of the first inning for his second homer in as many days, but Frederick would comeback to win a see-saw affair 7-5 to even up the series at one apiece.

Chisenhall (2-for-5) extended his season long hitting streak to 14 games with his team-leading 15th long ball of the season to give Kinston the early 2-0 lead. But the Keys would counter with a two-run dinger by Robbie Widlansky in the bottom of the first off starter Eric Berger. Widlansky would go 4-for-4 and is now hitting 14-for-26 (.538) against Kinston this season, including all three of his home runs coming against K-Tribe pitching.

In the bottom of the second, back-to-back errors by Kinston shortstop Ronald Rivas resulted in two runs crossing the plate, as Frederick took the lead 4-2. Berger would bounce back well though and toss six strong, allowing those four runs, just two earned, on six hits, two walks and five strikeouts.

Berger would also leave the game with the lead as Kinston got a run in the fourth on a Sean Gleason balk. Richard Martinez would score from third on the play to cut the lead to 4-3.

Then in the sixth inning with runners on first and second, a two-out bloop hit by Lucas Montero scored Adam Davis and Ryan Blair on a bang-bang play at the plate to regain the lead for the Indians 5-4.

The lead wouldn’t stick, however, as Kinston reliever Chen-Chang Lee had trouble finding the strike zone in the seventh inning. Lee allowed a leadoff single to Ryan Adams then hit Brandon Waring, allowed a single by Robbie Widlansky to load the bases, and then walked in two runs by issuing free passes to both Tyler Henson and Kraig Binick. Lee would surrender three runs on two hits, three walks and a hit batter in the inning and the Keys would hold on to a 7-5 win.

Kinston will try to take game three of the four game set tomorrow night as the Indians will have Alexander Perez (1-0, 0.00) make his second start for the K-Tribe.

Tourists Shutout Captains Again

The Asheville Tourists shutout the Lake County Captains for the second straight night, 4-0 on Tuesday. This is the first time this year the Captains have been shutout in back to back games.

The Tourists put up a run in the top of the first inning when Scott Robinson singled and stole second. Robinson scored on a single by Kiel Roling and it was 1-0. It went to 2-0 in top of the third inning when Jordan Pacheco hit is eleventh home run of the year. The Tourists extended the lead to 4-0 in the top of the fifth inning on a RBI ground out by Delta Cleary and a fielder’s choice by Pacheco.

Captains’ starter Trey Haley (2-5) took the loss going five innings and allowing four runs on eight hits, walking one and striking out four. Tourists’ starter Juan Nicasio (4-1) got the win pitching seven scoreless innings allowing four hits while striking out eight.

The Captains and Tourists play game three of the series on Wednesday at 7:00 PM with the Captains sending LHP Chris Jones (3-1, 5.55) to the mound. The Tourists are undecided.

Yankees Shutout Scrappers

On Tuesday night the Scrappers returned to Eastwood Field to start a six game homestand facing the Staten Island. Yankees starter Trenton Lare worked seven scoreless innings and the Yankees took game one from the Scrappers 4-0.

The Yankees, who were making their first trip to Niles since 2007, greeted the Scrappers rudely scoring single runs in the second and fourth off of starter Marty Popham. In the fifth, the Yankees added two more runs off of Popham when Neil Medchill hit a two run home run making it 4-0 Staten Island. The Scrappers would
threaten putting two runners on in both the sixth and seventh, but could not score, and after seven innings it remained 4-0 Yankees.

Again in the eighth and ninth the Scrappers would threaten, putting runners on a throwing errors, but could not score and the Yankees took game one of three against the Scrappers 4-0. Game two is tomorrow night against the Staten Island Yankees at 7:05 PM.
