Saturday Notebook

Triple-A Columbus outfielder Jordan Brown extended his hitting streak to 11 games in the Clippers 5-4 loss in Louisville. Brown went 2-for-5 with a 2B and RBI and is 19-for-49 with 4 2B, HR, 7 RBI and 12 R during the run.

Right-hander Fausto Carmona made his second appearance this season with Columbus, going seven innings and giving up five runs on eight hits (2 BB, 2 K, 106/71 strikes).

Double-A Akron right-hander Carlton Smith pitched two hitless innings of relief work in Akron’s 6-3 loss to Erie. Prior to the game, Smith was added to the Eastern League All-Star team, replacing teammate right-hander pitcher Vinnie Pestano who went on the disabled list with a right elbow strain.

High-A Kinston Third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall finished yesterday’s 6-1 victory over Potomac 2-for-4 with a run. Chisenhall has now hit in 11 straight games going 13-for-41 with 5 2B, 3B, 4 RBI and 4 RS during the streak. It’s his third streak of 10 or more games this year.

Right-hander Alexander Perez made his Kinston debut last night firing six scoreless innings to get the win (6 H, 2 BB, 6 K, 78 pitches).

Short-season Single-A Mahoning Valley infielder Rafael Vera is currently on a nine-game hitting streak after going 1-for-4 in Mahoning Valley’s 8-1 win over Batavia. He’s batting .385 (15-39) with 2 2B, 4 RBI and 2 R during the nine games.

Tony,

Do you know who was removed from the Kinston roster in order to make room for Perez? Thanks!

hey, was at the game last night in kinston. perez looked great, threw tons of changeups. just wondering, is he always mid 80's on the gun with his fastball?

changeup was 74-78, really nice difference. kid had a little swagger, definitely impressive

I think right now Perez is topping out at around 90mph with the fastball, but more sitting in the mid to high 80's.

The thing with him is he only weighs about 150lbs, so there's plenty of room for growth there on that 19 year old frame and plenty of scope therefore for some added velocity.

Have no idea what corresponding move was made when Perez was moved to Kinston. May not have been any move as the staff there was pretty ravaged with injuries. Espino moved out of the rotation for Perez, but (for the time being) is in Kinston, though I think he could move to Akron soon. May be some roster movement once the second half gets started here for Akron/Columbus.

Also, Perez sits 88-91 usually and with maturity he should be a guy who sits 91-93 I think with the fastball. Remember, two years ago at the same age Rondon had pretty much the same fastball velo as Perez does now but he had nowhere near the secondary offerings Perez has. If Perez's fastball shoots up like Rondon's or even to the 92-93 range he'll be a better prospect than Rondon.

Ok, looks like Ryan Morris has been put on the DL with a shoulder injury, so that is who Perez has replaced.
