Louisville sweeps Clippers into All-Star break

Louisville completed a three-game sweep of Columbus 8-4 in the final game before the All-Star break.

Things looked good early for the Clippers as starter Kenny Ray retired the side in order in the first two innings. The Clippers produced back-to-back third inning doubles from Tony Graffanino and Jordan Brown gave Columbus a 2-0 lead.

The lead, as in the first game of the series, was short-lived. Kenny Ray suffered a bout of wildness, walking two batters and giving up a double to Corky Miller and a three-run homer to Darnel McDonald to make it a 4-2 Bats. Two more walks led to three more runs in the fifth, two scoring on a Luis Bolivar triple.

Louisville starter Ramon Ramirez was nearly as bad, giving up four runs on six hits and five walks in five innings. The final two Clippers runs scored in the fifth with Graffanino and Brown again driving in runs, this time with a sac fly each.

Kip Wells threw three scoreless innings and Jeff Kennard tossed a perfect ninth for Louisville. For Columbus, Rafael Perez authored two scoreless frames and Masa Kobayashi pitched the eighth, striking out two batters.

The Clippers head into the All-Star break and return to action on Thursday at Huntington Park, hosting the Syracuse Chiefs at 7:05pm.

Late Rally Comes up Short, Aeros Lose 3-2

The Aeros pulled within a run in the 8th inning but it wasn’t enough, as the SeaWolves held on for a 3-2 win Sunday afternoon. The SeaWolves improve to 49-40, while the Aeros drop to 56-34.

The Aeros had a chance for early offense right off the bat. Jose Constanza walked to lead off the game, and Cristo Arnal joined him on the basepaths after being hit by a pitch. Jared Goedert was also given a free pass, but the bases were left loaded when Mickey Hall struck out to end the inning.

Erie took care of all of their scoring in the bottom of the 2nd. Ron Bourquin started the inning with a single. A wild pitch by Aeros starter Michael Tejera moved him to second, and he moved to third on a sacrifice fly. Bourquin would come around to score on an RBI single by Danny Worth. Worth would then score thanks to a double by Cale Iorg. Deik Scram would single home Iorg to finish the inning.

That would prove to be enough for the SeaWolves, as starter Jonah Nickerson shut down the Aeros offense for most of the afternoon. The Aeros tacked on a two-run homer by Matt McBride in the 8th, his 6th of the year, but Brett Jensen relived Nickerson, getting his 10th save of the season by retiring the final five Aeros hitters.

Akron will now try to salvage a split as they close out the road trip in the final game before the All-Star break Monday at 7:05 p.m. Josh Tomlin (9-5, 3.77 ERA) goes for win number ten against Erie’s Thad Weber (1-2, 4.71 ERA).

K-Tribe Takes Game, Series From Potomac

Kinston gave Potomac a taste of their own medicine, using two home runs to help beat the Nationals 5-3 Sunday afternoon at Historic Grainger Stadium. With the win Kinston took two of three games from Potomac, as the K-Tribe has now won two of their last three series.

Kinston started the scoring in the bottom of the first inning when Cord Phelps drove home Adam Davis with an RBI double. The K-Tribe extended the lead with a solo home run from Ole Sheldon in the bottom of the third inning. It was Sheldon’s second long ball of the season. After an RBI single by Richard Martinez made the score 3-1 in the bottom of the fourth, Lucas Montero drove in the winning runs with a two-run home run later in the inning. It was Montero’s third home run of the season.

The K-Tribe got a great starting pitching performance from Mike McGuire. McGuire went four innings, giving up two hits and one earned run. Bryce Stowell picked up the win in relief, giving up one run on two hits in 3 1/3 innings. Stowell walked five and struck out three. David Roberts got his first save of the season, giving up one earned run in 1 2/3 innings.

Every K-Tribe starter reached base safely, Martinez went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Ole Sheldon was 2-2 with run and RBI on his solo home run, he walked twice and reached base in all four plate appearances. The series win was Kinston’s first at home since May 8th – 10th.

The K-Tribe hits the road for a seven game trip starting at Frederick on Monday night. Game time 7pm, Russell Young will take the hill for the K-Tribe. Kinston returns home for a six game homestand Tuesday, July 21st through Sunday, July 22nd.

Scrappers Win Again 9-6

Scrappers pitching was able to keep the top hitting team in the NYPL in check and was able to take game three in the series 9-6 over the Muckdogs. Batavia scored one in the first to take the early lead, only to see the Scrappers come back and score one in the top of the second on Ben Carlson’s first home run of the season. Batavia responded with two in the third moving to the top of the third.

The Scrappers offense exploded scoring three in the top of the third and three more in the top of the fourth, making it 7-3 Scrappers. Each team exchanged two runs in the seventh and Batavia added a solo run in the bottom of the ninth making the final score 9-6 Scrappers. After the first off day of the season on Monday, the Scrappers return to Eastwood Field on Tuesday night for a 7:05 PM game against the Oneonta Tigers.
