Aeros Take Two Sunday in Harrisburg

The Aeros swept a Sunday afternoon doubleheader from the Harrisburg Senators, taking game one 6-2 and winning game two with a 2-0 shutout. The sweep improves the Aeros’ record to 55-28 while the Senators slip to 34-47.

Newly-signed Aeros lefty Bobby Livingston (7-2, 3.52 ERA between Akron and Bowie), had a memorable debut in game one, going the distance in his first start for his new team. Over the seven innings, Livingston gave up just two runs on five hits while walking one.

Harrisburg managed a run in the bottom half of the 2nd, but the Aeros came right back and posted four runs in top half of the 3rd. An RBI triple by John Drennen scored Carlos Rivero, while Drennen came around to score on a single by Jose Constanza. Jared Goedert scored the Aeros third run of the inning on a throwing error, and the scoring was closed out thanks to a sacrifice fly by Carlos Santana. That would be more than enough for Livingston, though the Aeros tacked on single runs in the 5th and 7th.

Armando Camacaro provided all the offense for the Aeros in game two with a two run homer in the top of the second, his first of the season. Aeros starter Steven Wright and three other pitchers shut down the Sens for the first six innings of game two before Vinnie Pestano came in to notch his 24th save in the 7th.

The finale of this four-game series and weeklong road trip is set for 7:00 p.m. Monday, as southpaw Ryan Edell (2-1, 2.62 ERA) will go for the Aeros and fellow southpaw Justin Jones (3-10, 5.02 ERA) counters for the Senators.

Kinston Takes Series With 2-0 win over Wilmington

Behind a great starting performance from Ryan Morris, Kinston shutout Wilmington 2-0 Sunday afternoon in Delaware. Kinston took three of four games from the Blue Rocks for the K-Tribe’s first four game series win of the season. The Indians shutout Wilmington twice in the four game set; Kinston has now won five of their last eight games.

Ryan Morris (4-8) put forth his best performance of the season, giving up just three hits in a season high seven innings. Morris walked just two batters and tied a season high by striking out seven batters. The Kinston starter retired fourteen in a row at won point and struck out the side in the second inning. Kinston’s David Roberts picked up his first save of the season, throwing two perfect innings to secure the K-Tribes fifth shutout of the season.

Wilmington’s Rowdy Hardy (2-1) was the tough luck loser after a solid start, giving up just six hits and one unearned run in seven innings. Hardy struck out five and did not walk a batter. Kinston scored their only run off of Hardy in the first inning. Lucas Montero led off the game with a double, and then advanced to third on a passed ball by Blue Rocks catcher Ryan Eigsti. After an infield hit by Tim Fedroff, Cord Phelps drove Montero in with an RBI single. Kinston would score another unearned run in the eighth inning off of Wilmington reliever Kelvin Villa, when another passed ball was charged to Eigsti, allowing Adam Davis to score from third base. Davis started the inning with a double, extending his hit streak to nine games. Montero and Ronald Rivas each had two hits for Kinston. The game took just two hours and twelve minutes to complete, the shortest nine inning game of the season for Kinston.

The K-Tribe (5-6 in the second half) will have a scheduled off day on Monday and return to play Tuesday night at Historic Grainger Stadium. The Tuesday game is Jerry Stackhouse Night at the ballpark as the Kinston native and NBA All-Star will be at the game to sign autographs. It is also a two dollar Tuesday featuring two dollar tickets, food items and drinks. Mike McGuire will make the start for Kinston, game time 7pm.

Captains Fall 3-1 to Grasshoppers

The Lake County Captains offense was held in check as the Greensboro Grasshoppers beat Captains 3-1 on Sunday. The Captains are 1-1 on the road trip.

The Grasshoppers got a run off of Captains starter Alexander Perez in the first inning when Justin Jacobs hit his seventh home run of the year and it was 1-0. It went to 2-0 in the bottom of the third inning when Kevin Mattison singled and stole second. Jeremy Synan singled home Mattison from second and it was 2-0. Ben Lasater singled home Jacobs in the bottom of the fifth inning to up the lead to 3-0.

The Captains got a run in the top of the eighth inning when Mark Thompson singled. He stole second and went to third when the catcher’s throw went into center field. Matt Willard grounded out allowing Thompson to score and it was 3-1.

Captains’ starter Alexander Perez (5-4) took the loss going five innings and allowing three runs on six hits, walking three and striking out two. Travis Turek followed Perez and threw three scoreless innings. Grasshoppers’ starter Johnny Dorn (8-5) got the win pitching eight innings and allowing one run on four hits, walking tow and striking out five. Pete Andrelcyzk pitched a scoreless ninth inning and picked up his fourteenth save.

The Captains and Grasshoppers play game three of the four game series on Monday at 7:05 PM with the Captains sending LHP T.J. House (2-7, 2.48) to the mound to face the Hoppers RHP Tom Koehler (4-3, 2.81).

Scrappers Fall To Jamestown

On Sunday night the Scrappers comeback attempt fell short and the Jammers recorded
their first win of the season against Mahoning Valley 7-6. The Scrappers manufactured a run in the top of the first and held a 1-0 lead through the first 2 and a half innings. Then in the bottom of the third the Jammers took the lead scoring two runs off of Scrapper starter Clayton Cook, taking the lead 2-1. In the bottom of the fifth the Jammers tacked on five more runs with the big blow, a three run home run coming off of the bat of Jammer first baseman Rickey Orton and it was now, 7-1 in favor of the Jammers.

The Scrapper comeback started in the top of the seventh when Rafael Vera singled to left and the ball went passed the Jammer left fielder allowing two runs to score. In the eighth the Scrappers added a run on a sac fly from Ben Carlson and two wild pitches to cut the Jammer lead down to one at 7-6. In the ninth the Jammer closer Wilson Mantos retired the Scrappers, surrendering only a single to Ben Carlson.

The Scrappers and Jammers will meet in the final game of the three game set on Monday evening at 7:05 PM in Jamestown.
