Marte Named Player Of The Week....Again

The International League announced today that Columbus third baseman Andy Marte has been named the league's Batter of the Week for the period from June 29-July 5. Marte becomes the league's first back-to-back Batter of the Week since May of 2006 (pitcher Cole Hamels of Scranton/Wilkes-Barre).

Marte has continued his red-hot hitting, and finds himself at or near the top of the league in nearly every offensive category for the past seven days. Marte posted a .458 batting average (T-3rd) to go along with 2 home runs (T-4th), 6 RBI (T-3rd), 11 hits (T-1st), 6 doubles (1st), 8 extra-base hits (1st), 6 runs scored (T-4th), a .567 on-base percentage (2nd), and a .958 slugging percentage (3rd). Marte is now 2nd in the International League in both batting average (.322) and slugging percentage (.544), and he’s also 4th in RBI (46). The righthanded hitting Marte is batting .328 and has all 11 of his home runs against right-handed pitching.

Tony,

Is there any way to get Marte up to the big league club for an extended look? They would have to add him to the 40-man, but there's currently room there. But to give him a real shot, they would have to sit Peralta for extended periods (or perhaps trade him). It's easy to forget, but Marte is still only 25 and it's possible he's finally starting to realize his potential. But if he fails again, you only have a now-disgruntled Peralta or perhaps Hodges for 3B in 2010. Have you heard anything from the Tribe brass?

Yes, 40-man issues are irrelevant as there is enough junk on there to remove someone if they really wanted to add Marte. Bottom line is, does the org sit Peralta - a proven solid, average player though comes off as lazy - or do they just keep going as is with Peralta at 3B?

The thing is, is Peralta needs work and he needs lots of looks at 3B so the vlub can determine if he can handle the 3B load in 2010. Also, not playing him diminishes his trade value, and it hurts his transition to the position. If Peralta was not here, then yes, you bring up Marte to play 3B. But, unless Peralta is traded (there are some rumors he could be dealt) then Marte's only chance is to come up as a bench option. Which means he won't play everyday, and he needs to play everyday to stay sharp.

In any case, I feel A LOT more comfortable with Peralta - a proven performer - at 3B in 2010 than I do Marte. I like Marte, but his ship has sailed with this org. Just nowhere to play him right now that doesn't hinder other decisions, and of course he is a FA at the end of the year and will be gone (unless we 40-man roster him in the offseason).
