Clippers fall to Scranton Wilkes-Barre 2-1
The Clippers fell in a pitcher's duel, losing 2-1 to the Scranton Wilkes-Barre Yankees on Tuesday night.
Fausto Carmona and Kei Igawa battled through seven innings. Carmona allowed a solo homer in the second to Yurendell de Caster. The Yankees didn't record another hit until a double in the seventh. Colin Curtis plated the winning run when Eric Duncan grounded to first. Fausto allowed two runs on five hits in his night of work, striking out eight and walking one.
Igawa was even better for the Yankees. He scattered four hits through seven innings, walking one and striking out four. While Igawa was on the mound, the Clippers failed to advance a runner to third base, stranding six players in the process.
Damoso Marte pitched the eighth inning on a rehab assignment for the Yankees. After recording the first two outs, Marte ran into trouble. Marte walked Jordan Brown and allowed a double to Matt LaPorta. Wes Hodges singled to right, scoring Columbus' only run. LaPorta tried to score on the play, but tripped while rounding third base and was tagged out. Right fielder Shelley Duncan threw LaPorta out at the plate.
Jensen Lewis pitched two innings of scoreless relief for the Clippers. Lewis has not allowed a run in his 13 innings with Columbus, the second longest streak for a Clippers pitcher this season.
The Clippers and Yankees will continue the series Wednesday at 7:05pm from Huntington Park. Hector Rondon (2-0, 0.75) will make his third start for Columbus and Josh Towers (3-5, 4.26) will toe the rubber for Scranton Wilkes-Barre.
Erie Downs Aeros Yet Again, Win 5-2
It was a familiar scene in Erie Tuesday night as the SeaWolves defeated the Aeros by the final count of 5-2 at Jerry Uht Park with 4,733 fans in attendance. It was the 11th win in 13 contests against the Aeros this season for Erie. Six of the last seven Akron (59-38) losses are now courtesy of the Seawolves, who improved to 54-42.
The scoring began for Akron in the third. Kyle Haines walked to lead off the inning. Jose Constanza bunted Haines to second and ended up on first himself thanks to a Jon Kibler error. Cristo Arnal was up next with the same result, as another error by Kibler on a bunt attempt loaded the bases. Back to back groundouts by Matt McBride and Carlos Santana brought in Haines and Constanza for a 2-0 Akron lead.
Erie got a run back in the bottom half of the inning as Andy Dirks scored on an RBI double by Danny Worth.
The 2-1 score would hold until the bottom of the fifth, when Dirks singled up the middle to score Santo De Leon and Deik Scram to make it 3-2 SeaWolves. Erie tacked on two more runs in the eighth
Kibler (6-5) earned the win with 7.1 strong innings of work while Bobby Livingston (7-5) took the loss. Brett Jennings posted his 11th save of the season by holding Akron hitless in the ninth.
This four-game series continues in Erie Wednesday night with a 7:05 p.m. start time Left-hander Ryan Edell (2-1, 2.60 ERA) gets the nod for Akron against Pat Stanley (4-3, 4.63 ERA).
Dash Get By K-Tribe 2-1
Winston-Salem scored two runs in the top of the first inning and hung on, defeating Kinston 2-1 Tuesday night at Historic Grainger Stadium.
Kinston’s 19-year-old starter Alexander Perez ran into trouble in the top of the first inning. With one out in the first frame, Justin Greene walked and then stole second base. Jim Gallagher drove Greene home with an RBI single. After back-to-back singles by Brent Morel and Seth Loman loaded the bases, Salvador Sanchez drove Gallagher home with an RBI ground out.
Down 2-0 Kinston would score their only run in the bottom of the first inning when Lucas Montero led off with a walk, stole second base, then came home on an RBI single by Lonnie Chisenhall. It was the 63rd RBI of the season for Chisenhall (1-for-4), the second most in the Carolina League this season. The K-Tribe would manage just three hits the rest of the way.
Perez (1-1) would settle down after the first, giving up just four more hits in his final five innings of work. Perez took the loss, giving up seven hits and two earned runs, walking one and striking out four. Kyle Landis pitched a scoreless inning from the bullpen, walking one and striking out two. Chen-Chang Lee pitched two perfect innings for Kinston, striking out two. Dash starter Anthony Carter (9-4) got the win for Winston-Salem. Former ECU Pirate Dale Mollenhauer went 0-for-3 with a walk.
The K-Tribe takes on Winston-Salem Wednesday night at Historic Grainger Stadium at 7pm. Paolo Espino will take the hill for the K-Tribe.
Scrappers Drop Second in a Row, 3-2 to Aberdeen
Tuesday night was game two of the Scrappers five game road trip in Aubdereen, Maryland. The Ironbirds surged out to an early 3-0 and then held on for the 3-2 victory, talking the first two games from Mahoning Valley in the three game series.
Aberdeen scored single runs in the second and third innings to take the lead 2-0 off of Scrappers starter Clayton Cook. Then in the fifth, the Ironbirds loaded the bases and Scrappers manager Travis Fryman went to the bullpen. Vidal Nuno then walked Levi Carolus to force home a run making the score 3-0 Auberdeen.
The Scrappers battled back in the sixth when Jason Smit singled and then scored on Chun Chen’s RBI double to center field. In the seventh, Greg Folgia delivered his second home run of the season, but that would be all the runs the Scrappers were able to score falling to Aberdeen 3-2.
