I'll be posting quick daily updates of the Indians' minor league players who are playing in offseason leagues for the rest of the winter league season (well, five to six times a week). Here are the players who were in action yesterday Monday October 18th:
- Cord Phelps - DH, Peoria Javelinas: 1-for-4, BB, 2 K, SB. Welcome home Mr. Phelps. After coming home over the weekend from the Pan-Am Games qualifying tournament in Puerto Rico, Phelps got his first taste of AFL action on Monday by easing into things at DH.
- Jason Kipnis - 2B, Peoria Javelinas: 0-for-4, R, BB. After a great weekend where he went 3-for-7 with a double, triple, home run and 6 RBI in the two games on Friday and Saturday, he took his third collar in five games played on Monday.
- Scott Barnes - SP, Peoria Javelinas: 4.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 5 K. Since each AFL team is made up of five organizations, each organization is allowed to send one starter. Barnes is the Indians guy, and he is off to a hot start. In his two starts he has allowed five runs and six hits, but has fanned 11 and walked no one in 6.2 innings.
- Eric Berger - RP, Peoria Javelinas: 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K. Berger is getting some work in the bullpen, and so far so good. In two games he has not allowed a run, though has allowed four baserunners while striking out three in two innings.
I'll have a lot more on the Arizona Fall League from my visit there late last week and the roles everybody is in tomorrow in my AFL Notebook.
Also, a quick update for the other Tribe farmhands in action in the Venezuela Winter League which started up last week. Outfielder Nick Weglarz is not with the Caracas team yet as he is still in Goodyear, AZ rehabbing from his thumb injury he suffered in August, but he is expected to join the team there by the end of the month. Third baseman Jared Goedert is 5-for-20 with 2 RBI.
