Miller's Career In Jeopardy

This is not what we wanted to hear in regard to Indians right-hander Adam Miller. From an Indians press release today:

*****

Last week RHP Adam Miller experienced pain in his right long finger (middle finger) with a decrease in range of motion and a decrease in strength in the finger. He then saw a hand specialist in Scottsdale, AZ on Monday, March 16 and also was seen by Dr. Tom Graham the following day.

Adam threw again today, playing catch up to 105 feet and then threw 25 pitches off of the mound without experiencing any pain in the finger during or following. If Adam can learn to pitch with the altered anatomy in the finger and can compensate and pitch effectively with it, no surgery will be necessary.

However, if Adam cannot pitch effectively over the next 7-10 days showing command, control and velocity, he will undergo reconstructive surgery on his right long finger.

Due to the injury being to his right long finger, the injury could be career threatening.

If Adam undergoes the surgery, rehabilitation could be 9-12 months.

obviously this is lousy news but it appears the Indians prepared for this possibility by acquiring players like Meloan and Bryson last season (along with the various draft picks).

Guess we take the wait and see approach.

I feel really sorry for the guy. For us it is a matter of being disappointed and hoping someone else can fill in his loss (such as Meloan in the pen or DeLaCruz as a long term starting pitching star).

But for Miller, it is a potentially life altering event, and I'm sure it is pretty traumatic for the fellow.

Whether this is career-ending or not, I just hope Adam Miller can bounce back personally. I know he has been giving it all for this organization for the past few years and I appreciate his efforts.

It's not fair for this poor guy.

It is a shame, and I really feel for the guy. He has worked his ass off to get back and was right on track to make the big league club out of ST this year.

The real downer is this guy has all the talent and should be in the bigs, yet a freak finger injury will likely end his major league career before it even started.

And I take offense to anyone who calls him out for being a sissy or not being tough and is brittle. This kid works as hard as anyone, and aside from the elbow issue in 2005 the first two months of the season his only injury issue really has been this finger the past two years. It is a freak injury.

Anyway, I wish Adam the best and hope he can find a way through this thing!
