Lake County pitchers combined to toss nine innings of no-hit baseball defeating Dayton 3-1 on Monday night at Classic Park in the home opener. Trey Haley, Francisco Jimenez and Clayton Elhert made history in northeast Ohio and now share something special with the late great Bob Feller; throwing a no-hitter in a home opener.
The Captains scored the first for the fifth straight game. In the second inning, Jason Smit drew a leadoff walk and came into score on Alex Monsalve's RBI double. Dayton scored their lone run in the third inning using two walks and two wild pitches against starter Haley to make 1-1.
In the fifth inning, Carlos Moncrief doubled with one out to reach, a Giovanny Urshela ground out moved him to third. Moncrief scored on Daniel Renken wild pitch to make it 2-1. Tyler Cannon hit the Captains' first homerun of the season to give the Captains a little insurance, at 3-1.
The real fireworks came on the mound, Haley started the night working three innings, allowing a run with no hits, walking two and striking out four. Jimenez (1-0) earned the win pitching four scoreless innings allowing just one walk and striking out two. Clayton Elhert picked up the save, his second tossing a perfect eighth and ninth inning to seal the no-hit bid.
Dragons' starter Renken (0-1) took the loss going five innings allowing three runs on five hits, walking three and striking out eight.
Lake County and Dayton continue their four game series from Classic Park on Tuesday night at 7:00PM. Captains' opening day starter RHP Mike Goodnight (1-0) will make his second start of the season against RHP Josh Smith (0-1) for the Dragons.
Columbus Rained Out
The Clippers game vs. Louisville was postponed Monday due to rain. The Clippers and Bats will play a doubleheader Tuesday, starting at 6 PM at Louisville Slugger Field.
Chen Powers Aeros to a 6-5 win over Curve
Chun Chen doubled home two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to break a 4-4 tie as the Akron Aeros went on to a 6-5 win over the Altoona Curve Monday at Canal Park.
Grady Sizemore made his third rehab start for the Aeros going 2-4 with two RBI, while Jason Donald was 0-4 with two strikeouts in his second rehab start.
Right-handed pitcher Bryan Price came in from the bullpen to get the win pitching 1.1 scoreless innings, while right-handed pitcher Cory Burns recorded his third save of the season pitching a scoreless top of the ninth.
Right-handed pitcher Tim Alderson suffered the loss pitching two innings of relief and giving up three unearned runs.
The Aeros (3-2) got on the board first on a Juan Diaz solo home run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Akron added two more in the fifth inning on a Sizemore double that scored Tim Fedroff and Jordan Henry to make it 3-0.
The Curve (2-3) answered back in the sixth inning scoring four times off Aeros starter Matt Packer to take a 4-3 lead.
The Aeros tied it at 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh inning on a throwing error by Altoona second baseman Brock Holt that allowed Henry to score. Later in the inning, Chen hit a two-RBI double that scored Sizemore and Donald and the Aeros went on to take game one of the series.
The Aeros will go for their third straight win tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. in game two of a three-game series against the Curve. The Aeros will give the ball to left-handed pitcher Kelvin De La Cruz. He will be opposite Altoona righty Bryan Morris. Game two can be heard on Fox Sports 1350 AM. Coverage begins at 6:50 p.m.
Starting Pitchers Dazzle Monday Night in Kinston
The Wilmington Blue Rocks beat Kinston 4-1 Monday night at Historic Grainger Stadium.
Giovanni Soto had a solid Carolina League debut on the mound for Kinston. Soto went 5 2/3 innings, giving up two runs on three hits. He walked one and struck out eight. Wilmington took a 1-0 lead on Soto and the K-Tribe when John Whittleman hit a solo home run in the top of the fifth inning.
Wilmington's Noel Arguelles made his long awaited American pro baseball debut. The Cuban defector signed with Kansas City for seven million dollars in 2010.
Arguelles gave up two hits in four innings of work. He did not walk a batter and struck out one.
Joey Mahalic came in for relief of Soto in the sixth with two-outs and a runner on second base. Rey Navarro greeted Mahalic with an RBI triple to make the score 2-1 in favor of the Blue Rocks. The Rocks would add two more runs off of Mahalic in the seventh inning with three singles and a throwing error. Wilmington had RBI singles in the inning from Juan Graterol and Deivy Batista.
Kinston got to Arguelles replacement, Michael Mariot in the bottom of the fifth inning. Adam Abraham hit a towering home run to left field to even the score at one. It was the first homer of the season for Kinston. Mariot would shut down the K-Tribe from there, not giving up another hit through his final 4 2/3 innings of work. Mariot took the win for Wilmington. Kinston had just three hits on the night.
Travis Turek pitched two solid innings of relief for Kinston, giving up just one hit in two innings while striking out three.
The two teams meet again Tuesday night at Historic Grainger Stadium. Tuesday is Marvin Daugherty Night and also a $2 Tuesday featuring $2 admission for everyone!

Although no hits given up, Trey still did show some of his old issues with control, throwing two wild pitches and walks in 3IP. If and when he grasps better command he flies upward in our system, but, still hasn't arrived at that point yet.
