A two-run home run from Jerad Head in the sixth gave Columbus a 3-2 lead and put them up for good. Luke Carlin added a solo shot in the seventh, and Head hit his second two-run shot of the game in the eighth.
Head, who now has three homers on the year, went 2-4 on the game.
The other Clippers' run came via Carlin, who drove home Luis Valbuena with a second inning single.
The Mud Hens two runs came in a wild second inning in which Toledo stole three bases and didn't record a hit. Prior to that, Clippers center fielder Ezequiel Carrera injured his right arm after his diving catch robbed Toledo's Ryan Strieby of a single.
David Huff went five innings for Columbus, struck out five and did not allow an earned run. Reliever Zach Putnam recorded the win with two scoreless frames.
Clippers right fielder Chad Huffman went 2-4 at the plate, and gunned out Toledo's Scott Sizemore at second base in the eighth inning.
The two teams complete a six game home and home series Monday at 11:35 am with Corey Kluber facing Andy Oliver.
Aeros Fall in extras, lose both games of twinbill
Matt Langwell gave up a game winning RBI single to Michael Spidale in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Akron Aeros fell to the Reading Phillies 5-4 in game two of a doubleheader Sunday at FirstEnergy Stadium.
With the loss, the Aeros (5-6) lost both seven-inning contests.
Langwell was saddled with the loss pitching 0.2 innings and giving up the Spidale RBI single.
R-Phils reliever Justin De Fratus got the win pitching two scoreless innings, scattering two hits, walking three and striking out two.
The Aeros got on the board in the top of the first inning. Jordan Henry led off the game with a single and then stole second. Tim Fedroff followed with a walk. With two on and no one out, John Drennen hit a three-run home run to center field. Later in the frame, Kyle Bellows doubled and advanced to third on a Donnie Webb single. Bellows later scored on a Cristo Arnal RBI groundout to make it 4-0.
The R-Phils (8-3) answered back in the bottom of the first inning as Cody Overbeck hit a three-run home run off Aeros starter Eric Berger, which cut the Akron lead to 4-3. Overbeck’s home run was his second of the doubleheader and fifth of the season.
After a rough first, Berger settled in and went on to pitch three innings giving up three earned runs on three hits, striking out three and walking one.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Derrick Mitchell hit a solo home run to left field for Reading to tie the game 4-4.
The game remained tied until the extra frame. Mitchell started the inning with a single. Fidel Hernandez sacrificed him to second. Following a fly out, Spidale drove in Mitchell on a single to center field as the R-Phils won three games of this four-game series.
The Aeros will continue their road trip as they begin a three-game series with the Bowie Baysox Monday at Prince George’s Stadium. The Aeros will give the ball to lefty Kelvin De La Cruz. De La Cruz is 0-2 in 2011, but has 0.90 ERA. He will face right-handed pitcher Zach Clark, who is 1-0 with a 2.25 ERA on the season. Winston-Salem Takes Rubber Match From K-Tribe
The Dash jumped all over Kinston in the middle innings, going on to a 9-0 win Sunday afternoon in Winston-Salem. With the win, Winston-Salem (6-3) took the three game series from Kinston (2-7).
Winston-Salem started the scoring in the bottom of the third inning off of Kinston starter Giovanni Soto. Jose Martinez began the half inning with a walk. Jared Mitchell then reached safely after an error by Kinston first baseman Chase Burnette. With two-outs in the inning, Martinez attempted to steal third base. Kinston's catcher Roberto Perez threw wide of the third base bag allowing two runs to score on the error. The Dash extended the lead to 3-0 when Martinez hit an RBI triple to drive home Daniel Wagner in the bottom of the fourth. Winston-Salem drove Soto from the game with an RBI double from Mitchell driving in Martinez later in the inning. Soto went 3 2/3 innings, giving up six hits and four runs (two earned). Soto (0-2) walked four and struck out four, taking his second loss of the year for Kinston.
Joey Mahalic had trouble out of the pen for Kinston, giving up four hits and five earned runs through 2 1/3 innings of work. The big middle inning stretch was capped for the Dash by a three-run home run from Ian Gac. The 25-year-old hitter has a Carolina League leading five home runs on the season.
Dash starter Cameron Bayne was very good, picking up the win with seven innings of shutout ball. Bayne allowed just five base runners in those seven innings, walking two and giving up three hits.
The K-Tribe continues their first roadtrip of the season Monday in Wilmington, Delaware. Game time 6:30 pm Kinston's T.J. House will get the start on the mound for the Indians. The K-Tribe will return home Thursday to begin an eight game homestand.
Mistakes Key in 7-6 Loss to Bowling Green
Phil Wunderlich was the hero once for the Hot Rods, on Sunday afternoon trailing 6-5 he hit a two-run homerun to right in the seventh inning, lifting Bowling Green to a 7-6 win over the Captains.
In the first inning, Tyler Cannon lead the game off with a solo homerun his second of the year to make it 1-0 Lake County.
Cody Rogers hit a leadoff homerun off Mike Goodnight in the bottom of the first to tie the game at one.
With two outs in the second inning and two on, Nick Bartolone dropped a line drive hit to him at short, loading the bases for the Hot Rods. The next pitch was in the dirt and Bowling Green took a 2-1 lead when Alejandro Torres scored.
Lake County took the lead when Alex Lavisky hit his second homerun of the year, a two run bomb to left making it 3-2 in the fifth.
Bowling Green came right back in the bottom half of five. Hector Guevara hit a leadoff homerun his first of the year to tie the game. With two outs, Bartolone dropped another fly ball at short allowing Robby Price to reach. Price stole second base and scored on an RBI double by Wunderlich making it 4-3.
Captains took the lead back in the sixth inning, Cannon scored from third on a wild pitch, and Alex Monsalve singled in Aguilar to make it 5-4. Anthony Gallas made it 6-4 with an RBI double in the seventh.
Eliazer Suero (1-0) picked up the win working three and third, allowing a run on three hits, walking one and striking out three. Owen Dew (0-2) took the loss allowing three runs on four hits, in three innings of work, walking two and striking out three.
The Captains return home Monday night to begin a six game home stand as they welcome in the Lansing Lugnuts first pitch is 7:00PM at Classic Park. Lake County will send RHP Mike Rayl (2-0) to the mound against RHP Daniel Webb (0-1) for the Lugnuts. Catch all the action on AM 1330 WELW or online at captainsbaseball.com.
