Notes on Offense:

Tyler Cannon blasted the first homerun of the season for the Captains on April 11th; a shot down the left field line versus the Dayton Dragons. Jason Smit, Tyler Cannon and Giovanny Urshela have been leading the Captains on offense.

For the week, the Captains hit .265 and scoring 47 runs (first in the Midwest League).

Hitter of the Week: Jason Smit (1B/OF) 

For the first week of the season, Smit has paced the Captains offense. The right fielder hit .483 with 14 hits, one homerun, and six RBI. The Aussie is in his second season with the Captains.

Notes on Pitching:

The highlight of the week in pitching was the no-hitter thrown on the home opener. Trey Haley, Francisco Jimenez, and Clayton Ehlert combined to no hit the Dayton Dragons. Haley went three innings, and allowed the only run on a wild-pitch. Jimenez and Ehlert went the final six, and retired the final 17 batters of the ball game. It was the franchise’s third no-hitter since it’s inception in 2003.

Mike Goodnight had a stellar opening day start versus Great Lakes on April 7th. He went five innings, and allowing only two runs. Goodnight only allowed one Loon hit, while striking out three and walking only one.

Mike Rayl followed the next day with a brilliant start. He went five innings of one hit ball, and had five strikeouts.

Fourth round pick, Kyle Blair made his professional debut versus the Great Lakes Loons. Blair went four innings, giving up only one earned run. In eight innings for the week, Blair has totaled eight strikeouts.

Pitcher of the Week: Mike Rayl

Rayl went 2-0 on the week. He did not give up any runs, and opponents only had two hits off the lefty in two games. He had 11 strikeouts and three walks in 11 innings pitched.
