The Columbus Clippers rode the hot bat of Chad Huffman to a second straight win over the Louisville Bats by a 19-3 final score Thursday night. Huffman became the first Clipper since Matt LaPorta to homer three times in a single game and set a franchise record with nine RBI.
Johnny Cueto struggled in his second rehab start, going only 1.2 innings and allowing eight earned runs before exiting after 68 pitches. The bullpen fared no better for the Bats. David Johnson walked five and allowed seven runs over 2.1 innings. Matt Klinker and Michael Griffin each allowed two runs. Only Daniel Ray Herrera pitched and came away unscathed.
Travis Buck played his first game as a Clipper and had hits in each of his first four at-bats, finishing 4-6 with three RBI.
Zach McAllister earned his 3rd win of the season, throwing six innings and allowing only one run. Jess Todd and Joe Martinez finished off the Bats to pull the Clippers into a first place tie with Louisville in the IL West.
The final game of the series will be a 7:05pm affair with David Huff taking the mound for Columbus and Tom Cochran pitching for Louisville.
Sanchez's two run shot helps Aeros down R-Phils, 6-3
Akron Aeros second baseman Karexon Sanchez picked an opportune time to get his second hit of 2011.
With a runner on second and one out in the bottom of the fourth inning, Sanchez hit a two-run home run to right field that proved to be the difference as the Aeros went on to beat the Reading Phillies 6-3 Thursday at Canal Park.
Left-handed pitcher Eric Berger pitched 1.2 scoreless innings of relief to pick up the win walking two and striking out four. Cory Burns pitched a scoreless top of the ninth inning to earn his Eastern League best sixth save of 2011.
Chris Kissock suffered the loss for the R-Phils pitching 5.2 innings, giving up six earned runs on nine hits, walking two and striking out two.
The R-Phils (9-5) got things started in the top of third inning off McFarland. With one out, Tuffy Gosewisch walked. He advanced to third on a Freddy Galvis single and scored on a Michael Spidale RBI single. Later in the frame, Matt Rizzotti doubled home both Galvis and Spidale to give the R-Phils a 3-0 lead.
In his first start for the Aeros in 2011, McFarland got the no decision lasting 4.1 innings, giving up three earned runs on six hits, walking three and striking out five.
The Aeros (8-7) answered back in the home half of the third off Kissock. Tim Fedroff singled with one out and advanced to third on a Juan Diaz double. Chun Chen followed with a RBI single to cut the deficit to 3-1. Diaz came into score when Matt McBride grounded into a force out to make it 3-2 Reading. Akron took the lead an inning later on the Sanchez two-run home run.
John Drennen hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth inning and the Aeros executed a squeeze bunt in the bottom of the sixth inning to make it 6-3 as Akron went on to the win.
The Aeros will look to make it two-in-a-row against Reading Friday afternoon. Left-handed pitcher Matt Packer gets the start for Akron. Packer is 0-1 with a 5.91 ERA in 2011. He will face righty J.C. Ramirez, who is 2-0 with a 2.03 ERA this season. First pitch is at 3:05 p.m. The game can be heard on Fox Sports 1350 AM or online at sportsradio1350.com Coverage begins at 2:50 p.m.
Kinston Wins Third Straight, Beating Myrtle Beach 6-2
The K-Tribe used their biggest inning of the season to take down Myrtle Beach 6-2 Thursday night in Kinston. It was the third straight victory for the Indians and brought an end to the Pelicans six game winning streak. The win begins an eight game homestand for the K-Tribe.
Trailing 1-0 going into the bottom of the fifth inning, Kinston blew the game open with a five run fifth. Justin Toole started the bottom of the frame with a single, the first of five straight hits for Kinston. Tyler Holt followed with a single. Bo Greenwell then drove Toole home with a base knock of his own. Abner Abreu followed with an RBI double to bring home Holt. Adam Abraham just missed a home run with a long RBI double to plate Greenwell and give Kinston a 3-1 advantage. Casey Frawley was credited with an RBI when his grounder was misplayed by the shortstop Leury Garcia and Abreu scored. Chase Burnette finished the big inning with an RBI ground-out to score Abraham as the Indians batted around. It was the most runs, hits and batters Kinston had in a single frame this season.
Kinston (5-8) would make the score 6-1 on an RBI single from Abreu in the sixth inning. Abreu went 2-for-5 with two RBI. Greenwell went 3-for-5, Toole went 2-for-3 and is now hitting .433 on the season.
Starter Clayton Cook (1-1) was great in the win for Kinston. Cook went six innings, giving up just three hits and one earned run. He walked two and struck out five. Japan native Toru Murata was solid in his K-Tribe debut, picking up the save. Murata gave up a run on two hits in three innings. He struck out the final five batters he faced for a total of six on the night. Myrtle Beach starter Barret Loux (1-1) took the loss for the Pelicans.
The homestand continues Friday night at Historic Grainger Stadium. It is Beach Music Night as Steve Hardy will be on hand for the festivities. Game time 6:30 pm, Giovanni Soto gets the start for Kinston.
Captains take it too Hot Rods 9-5
Lake County bounced back on Thursday night defeating the Hot Rods 9-5. The Captains pounded out sixteen hits en route to the victory to improve to 8-7 on the year.
Captains took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning, Jason Smit began the second with a walk and single by Argenis Martinez put runners on first and third. Nick Bartolone drove in his first run of the season with a single to score Smit.
In the third, Giovanny Urshela collected one of his three hits with a lead single. Jesus Aguilar singled to put runners on first and second. Alex Monsalve doubled down the right field line to extend his hit streak to nine straight games and drive in Urshela to make it 2-0.
Lake County exploded for four runs in fourth inning to make it 6-2. Bartolone walked to lead the inning off and scored on a Carlos Moncrief triple. Tyler Cannon drove in Moncrief with a sacrifice fly to right. Alex Monsalve doubled in Urshela for second RBI of the game. Smit singled to center to drive Monsalve to cap off the scoring.
Carlos Moncrief his first homerun of the season in the fifth inning, the two-run shot to right made it 8-2 in favor of Lake County.
Smit drove in his second run of the game with a sacrifice fly to leftfield to score Monsalve to make it 9-2 after six.
Bowling Green leadoff the seventh inning, a leadoff walk by Phil Wunderlich and then a single by Nick Schwaner put two aboard. An error by third baseman Urshela allowed Wunderlich to score and a fielder's choice by Kevin Kiermaier drove in Schwaner to make it 9-4 Captains.
In the eighth inning, Dale Dickerson pitching in relief for Lake County dished up a leadoff homerun to Cody Rogers to make it 9-5.
Francisco Jimenez (2-0) picked up the win working three innings, allowing two run on two hits, walking one and striking out one. George Jensen (0-1) took the loss working three innings, allowing four runs on eight hits, walked two and struck out six. Steven Wright started the game for the Captains worked four innings allowed two runs on one hit, walked two and struck out one.
